A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is a wearable sensor applied through the skin that measures glucose in the fluid just beneath it. A smartwatch or ring that claims to measure glucose by itself, without a skin-piercing sensor, is not an equivalent device: the FDA says no such watch or ring is authorized, cleared, or approved for that use and recommends consumers not buy or use one. A watch can display readings from a compatible, authorized glucose device, but that does not mean the watch measures glucose.
What does a glucose-monitoring wearable actually measure?
A CGM sensor attaches to the body, commonly the arm or stomach, and measures glucose in interstitial fluid—the fluid just below the skin. It sends readings to a smartphone or another receiver and may update every few minutes. It does not directly sample blood. Because interstitial glucose can differ from blood glucose, follow the device instructions and your care team’s advice about when a fingerstick check is needed. The CDC notes that checks may be needed occasionally, particularly when someone is new to CGM use or newly diagnosed. CDC guidance on continuous glucose monitoring
CGM sensors have model-specific replacement schedules. The CDC gives a general range of 7 to 14 days, not a duration that applies to every sensor. Check the current instructions for the particular device you use.
Can a smartwatch or ring measure blood sugar on its own?
No. In a safety communication dated February 21, 2024, the FDA said: “The FDA has not authorized, cleared, or approved any smartwatch or smart ring that is intended to measure or estimate blood glucose values on its own.” The agency recommends consumers do not buy or use watches or rings making that claim. This warning is about a watch or ring purporting to measure or estimate glucose independently. It is different from a smartwatch app that displays readings sent by an authorized blood glucose device, such as a skin-piercing CGM. FDA warns that inaccurate readings from an unapproved standalone product could prompt people with diabetes to make inappropriate treatment decisions, including errors involving insulin or other medicines that can rapidly lower glucose.
Who may use an over-the-counter CGM in the United States?
OTC availability depends on the product and its labeling; it does not mean every CGM is suitable for anyone who wants to try one. The FDA’s OTC integrated CGM classification describes non-intensive monitoring for people who are not on insulin and do not have a significant risk of problematic hypoglycemia. The category excludes devices intended to control insulin delivery. FDA also says users should not make treatment decisions from device output without consulting a qualified health professional. Dexcom Stelo’s stated OTC use
On March 5, 2024, the FDA announced clearance of Dexcom Stelo, describing it as its first OTC CGM. FDA said Stelo is intended for adults aged 18 or older who do not use insulin, including people without diabetes who want to understand how diet and exercise may affect glucose. That specific intended use should not be generalized to other CGMs or users; check the current product labeling before choosing a device. FDA announcement on Stelo clearance
What can people without diabetes learn from a CGM?
A CGM can display how glucose changes alongside meals and activity, but that information is not a diagnosis, a treatment instruction, or proof that monitoring improves health outcomes for people without diabetes. FDA’s Stelo announcement establishes a defined intended use for that product; it does not establish a general health benefit from CGM use among people without diabetes.

In 2025, the Associated Press quoted endocrinologist Jody Dushay saying there is scant evidence that CGMs are useful for people with normal blood sugar levels. It also quoted former FDA commissioner David Kessler: “No one knows what’s optimal in the nondiabetic state.” These are expert perspectives reported by AP, not FDA policy or a formal evidence review. How to choose and use a CGM
Compare devices against their current labeling and your clinical needs. A wearable’s phone display, alerts, or data sharing can make readings easier to access, but they do not change what the sensor measures or establish that a device is suitable for you.

- Wear time and placement: Confirm the approved placement and sensor replacement schedule for that model rather than relying on the general 7-to-14-day range.
- Display and connectivity: Verify phone compatibility, whether a separate receiver is available, and which alerts or data-sharing features are supported.
- Confirmation guidance: Interstitial readings may differ from blood glucose. Follow the product’s directions and your care team’s advice about confirming a reading with a fingerstick.
- Coverage and ongoing supplies: CDC says some people with diabetes may have coverage depending on their plan and clinical criteria. Without insurance, CGMs can cost thousands of dollars per year; actual coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary.
- Skin and day-to-day fit: Consider sensor placement, skin preparation, adhesives, customer support, and sensor availability where you live.
The CDC says an extra adhesive patch may help secure a CGM during bathing or swimming, humid weather, or frequent bumps. Check both the CGM maker’s instructions and the patch’s compatibility with your sensor. An overpatch helps with adhesion; it does not validate or improve the sensor’s measurements. A conventional blood glucose meter measures glucose from a small blood sample placed on a test strip and read by a handheld meter. It is not a wearable CGM, and the right device and testing schedule depend on clinical context. FDA advises choosing a device with a health professional and following that professional’s recommendation on testing frequency. FDA information on blood glucose monitoring devices
