The announcement, dated November 12, 2024, covered Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3. The forecast was broadly accurate: Google began a phased Wear OS 5.1 rollout on March 4, 2025, then targeted June 2025 and a quarterly update rhythm. That did not mean every app, Play Store component or Fitbit service stopped changing until March.
What Google actually announced
Google’s November support announcement said the November release would be followed by the “next update planned for March 2025.” The wording described a planned Pixel Watch software release, not a guarantee that every owner would see it on March 1 or that all connected services would be silent in the meantime. The announcement is documented in Google’s Pixel Watch support forum.
The gap was unusual compared with the recent pattern of monthly Pixel Watch update announcements, but Google did not publish a reason for the schedule. Reports linking the pause to Wear OS 5 problems, Android release timing or preparation for a larger update remain speculation, not an official explanation. Contemporaneous coverage also noted that no specific cause had been given.
The November update was different on each watch
Calling it one identical “Pixel Watch update” is misleading. Google listed different work for the first two generations and the Pixel Watch 3.

Why “no updates” overstates the pause
Pixel Watch software arrives through several channels. A period without a new watch firmware release does not automatically stop:
- Google Play Store app updates;
- Fitbit features or cloud-service changes;
- account and phone-app updates;
- carrier-related changes; or
- security fixes bundled into the next system release.
The November statement concerned the next planned Pixel Watch system update. It did not promise that every part of the broader Google and Fitbit ecosystem would remain unchanged.

What happened on March 4, 2025
Google announced the March release on March 4, 2025, and said distribution would continue over the following weeks in phases determined by carrier and device type. The release brought Wear OS 5.1, new features, bug fixes and performance improvements. The announcement did not provide a complete feature-by-feature changelog, so claims about particular new functions should not be inferred from the version number alone.

Google’s March notice targeted June 2025 for the next update and described quarterly releases thereafter. “Targeted” and “planned” are the accurate terms: carrier, country, LTE status, model and staged rollout controls can change when an individual watch receives a build. The full announcement is available from Google.
Why some owners waited beyond March
March 4 was the start of a rollout, not universal availability. In April, Google acknowledged that some watches were still on the November software and said it would continue distributing the March release to those devices over the following weeks. Google also addressed problems reported by watches already on the March build, including watch-face changes made through the phone app and delayed notifications. The follow-up is recorded in Google’s April support announcement.

- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
This staged process explains why two owners of the same model could see different update dates. It also means that not receiving the update on March 4 was not, by itself, evidence that a watch had been abandoned.
What owners can do when an update is missing
Google recommends preparing the watch before checking and provides a troubleshooting sequence. It cannot override a carrier- or device-controlled rollout, so it is not a guaranteed way to force availability.
Recommended Free Tools
- Put the watch on its charger and charge it to at least 50 percent.
- Connect the watch to Wi-Fi and expect it to be unusable while installation runs.
- Open Settings → System → System updates and check for the release.
- If the check fails, press and hold the crown and side button together for 20 seconds, then wait for a complete reboot.
- Open Settings → Connectivity → Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth off.
- Open Settings → Connectivity → Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on.
- Return to Settings → System → System updates and check again.
If installation takes more than an hour, follow Google’s additional instructions in its Pixel Watch update troubleshooting guide. A staged rollout may still require waiting after these steps.

What the pause says about support—and what it does not
The March release continued support for all three models named in the November announcement and moved Google toward a stated quarterly cadence. A single three-to-four-month gap therefore does not establish that Google was abandoning Pixel Watch.
It also does not prove that Wear OS 5 defects caused the delay. Google confirmed that November resumed Wear OS 5 for Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2, but it did not connect that work to the March scheduling decision. Buyers should treat update cadence as one ownership factor alongside battery condition, hardware features, health tools, LTE needs and phone compatibility.

iPhones are not supported, and availability varies by country and model. Consult Google’s compatibility documentation rather than relying on an old specification list.
Should you replace a watch because of this pause?
Not solely because of the November-to-March gap. If your watch is functional and compatible, updating through Google’s staged process is the sensible first step. An upgrade becomes more defensible when the decision is driven by hardware age, declining battery, required health or GPS features, LTE needs or a longer expected support runway.
Google’s current Pixel Watch 4 support page describes a brighter domed display, longer battery life, faster charging, the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform, dual-frequency GPS, Gemini access and satellite emergency communications. These are Google’s product claims, not independent test results; review the official Pixel Watch 4 information for current availability.
Protection is a separate decision. The current U.S. Google Preferred Care terms list a two-year plan at $89 and a monthly plan at $4 for covered devices including Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3. Eligibility, deductibles, enrollment windows and regional terms apply; verify the official terms PDF before purchase.
The accurate retrospective
As a November 2024 headline, “Pixel Watch won’t see another update until March 2025” was substantially correct: Google had announced no next planned Pixel Watch system update before March. The complete record is more precise. November’s payload differed by generation, app and service updates could continue, Wear OS 5.1 began a phased rollout on March 4, some owners waited into April, and Google then targeted quarterly releases. The pause was real, but it was a scheduled gap in system updates—not a freeze of every Pixel Watch-related change.
