Google’s August 2024 update for the first-generation Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 was a security-focused maintenance release, not a feature drop. Google listed the latest security patches and no new user-facing features. The global firmware build was TWD9.240805.001.A2; the rollout began August 5, 2024, and arrived in phases.
What the August update included
Google’s August 5, 2024 announcement described the release as containing the latest security patches. It did not announce a new Wear OS version, watch faces, health features, battery modes, interface changes, or major app additions. That means a watch could install the update and look and behave much as it did before; the announced benefit was security maintenance, not a visible new feature.
The announcement does not identify individual vulnerabilities or promise particular bug fixes. It therefore does not establish that this release improved battery life, performance, charging, health tracking, or reliability. Security updates can still matter even when they do not change what you see on the screen.
Which watches received it?
The announcement covered supported first-generation Google Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 devices running Wear OS 4. It did not cover the Pixel Watch 3, which launched later in 2024. The listed firmware version for global models was the same for both eligible watches:

| Watch | Platform requirement | Global August 2024 build |

| Google Pixel Watch | Wear OS 4 | TWD9.240805.001.A2 |
| Google Pixel Watch 2 | Wear OS 4 | TWD9.240805.001.A2 |
Google’s announcement lists this as the global build; availability and timing could vary by carrier and device, so do not assume every regional variant received an identical build at the same time.
When did it arrive?
Google began the rollout on August 5, 2024. Distribution was phased according to carrier and device, rather than being available to every eligible watch at once. Google said a notification would appear on the watch when its over-the-air update became available. Not seeing one on August 5—or immediately afterward—did not by itself mean that the watch had a problem.

The pattern followed Google’s July 2024 release, which was also described as a security-patch update for these watches. Google listed July global builds as TWD9.240705.001 or TWD9.240705.001.A1, depending on the published variant. That comparison shows a similar release-note pattern, but does not establish that the August update fixed or preserved any specific July issue. See Google’s July 2024 announcement.
How to check for and install the update
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap System, then System updates.
- Check whether the update is available and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Keep the watch sufficiently charged and connect it to its charger if prompted. A stable connection to the phone or Wi-Fi can also help during the check and download.
The menu path is Settings → System → System updates. Google’s Pixel Watch setup and support guidance provides additional device help.

If the update does not appear
A delayed offer can be normal during a phased rollout. If the watch is eligible but the update is not listed, try this sequence:
- Confirm the watch is connected to its phone or Wi-Fi and has sufficient charge.
- Restart the watch.
- Return to Settings → System → System updates and check again.
- Allow time for the carrier-and-device rollout to reach the watch. Google did not give a universal deadline by which every device would receive it.
- Once installed, check the complete displayed software version against TWD9.240805.001.A2 for the listed global build.
A community reply to Google’s announcement discussion mentioned a watch still showing a July update label. Such a report is anecdotal: a confusing or delayed label alone does not prove installation failed.

What if the watch gets unusually hot?
The same discussion includes a user report of heating during charging, but that does not establish that the August update caused overheating or that it was a widespread defect. If a watch becomes unusually hot, stop charging it. Seek official support if the heat continues, the watch repeatedly reboots, or there is physical damage. Google’s charging guidance explains model-specific charging compatibility; first-generation Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, and later models do not all have identical charging requirements.
Should you install it?
Yes, if the update is offered to an eligible watch. Google announced security patches, but did not enumerate the individual fixes, so there is no basis here to attribute a particular vulnerability or visible improvement to the release. Expect the watch to look much the same afterward; confirm installation by checking the software version rather than looking for a new feature.
