Google’s restriction is already in effect: since June 2024, people in the European Economic Area (EEA) have been unable to install third-party apps and clock faces on certain Fitbit smartwatches through the Google Health app. The watches are not thereby declared unusable, but the change removes a meaningful part of their customization and app ecosystem. Google says a selection of Google Health and Google apps remains available; its public guidance does not settle whether every third-party item already installed will keep working.
What Google changed
Google says it removed the ability for EEA users to install third-party apps and clock faces through the Google Health app in June 2024, citing new regulatory requirements. A third-party app or clock face is made by a developer other than Fitbit or Google. Google says users retain access to a selection of Google Health and Google apps, while Fitbit watches also come with preloaded apps such as Alarms, Weather and Exercise. This is a change to the distribution of third-party software—not an announcement that every app, watch function or Fitbit service has been removed. Google has not identified the specific regulation behind the decision on its support page.
Google’s app and clock-face guidance provides the policy details. Its app setup and troubleshooting guidance describes preloaded apps and saved clock-face behavior, but does not answer every question about third-party content under the restriction.

- Fitbit Sense and Sense 2
- Fitbit Versa, Versa Lite, Versa 2, Versa 3 and Versa 4
- Fitbit Ionic
This is not a statement that every Fitbit product is affected. Google’s restriction page does not list Charge, Inspire or Luxe trackers; the safe conclusion is that those models are not named in this specific published list, not that every feature or service on every tracker is guaranteed unchanged. Google’s device documentation distinguishes trackers from smartwatches: Fitbit device categories.
Pixel Watch is also not on the list. It is a separate Wear OS product, not one of the Fitbit smartwatch families covered by this Fitbit app-gallery policy.

Why the EEA is more accurate than “the EU”
Google describes the restriction as applying in the European Economic Area, which includes EU member states as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The headline shorthand “EU” therefore misses part of the stated scope. Google says users in other countries are not affected, but its published page does not fully explain how it determines a user’s region or whether account settings, app-store region or physical location controls access. Do not assume that changing a phone setting or travelling will change eligibility.
What owners can still use
The policy concerns installing third-party apps and faces. It does not say that built-in tracking, alarms or exercise functions are removed. Google also says a selection of Google Health and Google apps remains available. Which features are available depends on the device and service; the restriction page is not a guarantee that every function, cloud service or third-party connection will continue indefinitely.

Security support is a separate issue from app-gallery access. Google’s published minimum security-update commitments vary by model: Sense 2 and Versa 4 are listed through February 2028; Sense and Versa 3 through September and December 2025 respectively; Versa 2 through December 2025; and Ionic through September 2022. These are security-support dates, not promises about third-party software or cloud features. Check the model-specific policy for the complete list and qualifications: Google’s Fitbit security-update policy.
Ionic owners should also treat the model separately from ordinary ongoing use: Google links Ionic users to information about a voluntary recall. Review that notice before relying on or buying an Ionic.

What is not clear about apps and faces already installed
Google’s wording addresses the ability to install third-party content. It does not clearly establish whether an item already on a watch will remain usable, whether it can be reinstalled after a reset, or whether a saved face survives a device wipe. Nor does the restriction page settle whether an app that depends on a developer’s server will keep working, whether EEA users will receive developer updates, or whether moving an account or device to another country changes access.
Google says some Fitbit watches can switch among five saved clock faces, but that fact does not establish that a third-party face can be restored or used after the EEA restriction. If an installed third-party app or face is important to you, avoid resetting the watch until you have checked its recoverability with the developer. A used watch that had third-party content in another market should not be assumed to offer the same installation options in the EEA.

What owners should do
- Check the exact model. Compare the model name with Google’s eight-family list rather than assuming every Fitbit is covered.
- Keep a record of what you rely on. Note the app or face name, developer, watch model and any service or activation details before changing devices or resetting one.
- Contact the developer about paid features. Some third-party apps and faces used external payment providers such as KiezelPay for one-time activation or subscriptions. Keep receipts and ask the developer about continued service, updates, refunds or migration options.
- Do not count on a workaround. VPNs, region switching and unofficial installation methods are not established solutions. They may fail, disrupt synchronization or create privacy and support risks. Google’s terms restrict unauthorized connections and circumvention except where permitted by law: Google Fitbit Terms of Service.
Should you keep the Fitbit or replace it?
Keep using the watch if its built-in tracking and first-party features meet your needs and you do not depend on a particular third-party app or face. The EEA decision does, however, mean the Fitbit OS gallery is not a dependable reason to buy an affected used watch or to expect a growing third-party ecosystem.
Consider a different platform if customizable faces, a specific app or long-term developer choice is central to your purchase. Compare the whole experience rather than just the watch:
- Phone compatibility: Apple Watch is principally an iPhone option. Garmin, Samsung and other brands support Android in varying ways; check the exact model’s iPhone support and feature limitations.
- Battery and use: Fitness-oriented watches and trackers often prioritize longer battery life, while watchOS and Wear OS emphasize richer apps and interaction. Expectations vary by model and use.
- Apps and sports features: Wear OS and watchOS offer broader general-purpose smartwatch ecosystems; Garmin focuses more heavily on fitness and sports capabilities.
- Subscriptions and health features: Check whether sleep insights, coaching or readiness features require a recurring fee, and verify ECG, SpO₂, GPS and other features for the exact model and country.
- Data portability: Confirm which metrics and history can be exported or moved to services such as Apple Health or Health Connect; export support does not guarantee a complete transfer.
- Platform durability: Look for a current developer toolkit, active documentation and a clear distribution policy. A platform’s rules can matter as much as its hardware.
What the change means for developers
For developers who relied on Fitbit’s app and clock-face distribution, the restriction closes or sharply limits access to EEA users through the official installation route. Developers and customers may need to clarify whether listings remain available elsewhere, whether existing users can get updates, and what happens to paid activations or subscriptions. A companion phone app or web service may not replace the on-wrist experience, especially if it depends on Fitbit-specific functionality.
Google’s reference to new regulatory requirements is the only explanation established on its support page. It does not name the Digital Markets Act, the Digital Services Act or another specific law, so attributing the decision to a particular regulation as fact goes beyond what Google has stated.
