It was not the Wear OS 6 upgrade. Google announced that major platform update for eligible Pixel Watch models in October 2025, so “September update” can refer to different things: a Pixel Drop feature, a security bulletin, or a watch’s installed software build.
What arrived in September 2025?
Google announced its September Pixel Drop on September 3, 2025. The watch feature it highlighted was glanceable Google Maps directions, intended to make navigation easier to follow from the wrist while walking or cycling, without repeatedly taking out or tapping a phone. An announcement date does not establish that the feature became available on every watch that day. Model, software and app versions, region, and connectivity setup can affect what a particular owner sees. The announcement alone also does not establish that Maps navigation works independently of a phone in every setup; behavior can depend on the watch’s connectivity, location permissions, and app support.
Pixel Drop, watch update, and security bulletin: what is the difference?
- Pixel Drop: Google’s vehicle for announcing features across Pixel devices. A watch feature in a Drop does not necessarily arrive as one identically named firmware package on every watch.
- Watch software update: The software installed on the watch itself. Check the watch’s build and version rather than assuming a Pixel Drop headline corresponds to a particular installed release.
- Security bulletin: Google’s technical record of security fixes. The September 2025 Pixel Watch bulletin is separate from the Maps feature announcement; consult it for the affected components and vulnerability details rather than inferring them from the feature news. - App update: Maps on the watch and its companion phone app may need to be current and configured. An app update is distinct from a watch firmware release.
Wear OS 6 came in the October update
Google’s October 2025 announcement identified the Wear OS 6 rollout for eligible Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 devices. It listed the global build as BP3A.250905.014.W3 and described features including dynamic color theming, rounded fonts and icons, updated Wear OS components and Tile layouts, Google Maps auto-launch on supported watches, and the ability to add time to an active Safety Check. The September date in a headline, security patch label, or build identifier does not by itself mean Wear OS 6 rolled out in September. The larger platform upgrade was announced in October. The original Pixel Watch received an October 2025 release focused on security updates and bug fixes; that is not the same as receiving every later feature available on newer models. How to check the software on your watch
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Select System, then System updates.
- Review the update status and the displayed software and security information. If you are comparing releases, note the build number as well as the displayed month.
- For a build-level comparison, consult Google’s official Pixel Watch OTA images page. It is a reference for verifying builds, not a routine installation method for most owners; do not sideload or flash an image unless you understand the advanced procedure and recovery risks.

If your watch says it is up to date
That status does not necessarily mean every feature announced for Pixel devices is already present on your watch. Releases can roll out in phases, and LTE and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi variants, carriers, and regions may differ in timing. A Pixel phone update and a watch software release also have separate eligibility and rollout schedules.
Check the installed build instead of relying only on the month shown in settings. In one Google Pixel Watch Community thread, an owner reported a watch still displaying “September 2025” despite a build matching the October release. That example is a reason to verify the build, not proof that every watch showing September already has October software. Community report about a stale displayed update month

- Confirm the exact watch generation and whether it is LTE or Bluetooth/Wi-Fi.
- Check the build number against Google’s OTA page, and check whether Maps on both watch and phone is current.
- Confirm that location permissions and the phone connection or watch connectivity needed for your setup are available.
- If no update is offered, allow for rollout timing and carrier or regional differences; the September announcement does not guarantee an immediate download for each device.
How to interpret the September headline now
This is historical coverage: Google’s later major Pixel Watch software milestone was the June 2026 Wear OS 7 rollout for eligible devices.
