Google’s School time controls are available on the Fitbit Ace LTE and select Samsung Galaxy Watches for Kids, but they are not a universal feature for every Wear OS watch. The Ace LTE is the best-documented option: parents can schedule restrictions on games and incoming interruptions while leaving the child able to contact parents. It requires an active Ace Pass subscription, and the school must still allow connected watches.
What Google School time does
School time is a scheduled parental-control mode designed to reduce watch distractions during class. On the Fitbit Ace LTE, it restricts games and the Bit Valley game environment and silences incoming call and message notifications. It does not amount to a complete communications blackout: the child can still call and message parents or approved contacts. Parents can set a recurring weekly schedule and optionally configure a lunch break in the Fitbit Ace app. Google describes broader Family Link controls as allowing parents to choose permitted apps and calls or texts from specific contacts.
That distinction matters: silencing incoming alerts is not the same as blocking every call or message, and a restricted watch is not permission to use it at school. Check the school or district policy before buying or sending a connected wearable.
Which watches support it?

| Fitbit Ace LTE | Google documents School time setup through the Fitbit Ace app. It requires an active Ace Pass subscription. | Confirm current regional availability, service terms, and pricing before purchase. Google’s launch announcement listed Ace Pass at $9.99 monthly or $119.99 annually; that is launch-era pricing, not confirmed current pricing. Google’s Ace LTE announcement. |
| Select Samsung Galaxy Watches for Kids | Google has described School time for select Samsung Galaxy Watches using supervised-device and Family Link functionality. | “Select” does not mean every Galaxy Watch. Verify the specific model, software, region, carrier arrangement, and supervised child-account setup. Google’s School time announcement. |
| Google Pixel Watch | The available Google material does not establish the same full kids-focused School time experience for Pixel Watch. | Treat support as unconfirmed unless the device-specific Google setup flow or support page confirms it. 9to5Google’s rollout coverage. |
| Other Wear OS watches | Family Link documents setup for supported Wear OS devices, but Wear OS alone does not establish compatibility or standalone child use. | Check the exact watch and account configuration. Google’s supervised Wear OS setup guide. |
Google’s 2024 announcement said School time would expand to select Android phones, tablets, and Samsung Galaxy Watches; in February 2025, Google said it was available on Fitbit Ace LTE and Samsung Galaxy Watch for Kids while announcing expansion to Android phones and tablets. Those announcements do not create a blanket compatibility guarantee for all watches or markets. See Google’s February 2025 Family Link update.

How to set up School time on Fitbit Ace LTE
- Open the Fitbit Ace app and select the child’s card.
- Tap Settings, then School time.
- Turn on Weekly schedule, choose school days, and open each day to set its start and end time.
- Optionally enable and configure a lunch break. Google says a lunch break cannot be set if the scheduled School time period is shorter than 15 minutes.
Parents can change the schedule in the app. Google says changes take effect immediately when the watch has connectivity; if it is offline, they may not apply until it reconnects. For the current Ace LTE instructions, see Google’s Manage School time help page.
How Family Link setup differs
For a compatible Family Link-managed device, Google’s documented route is Family Link → select the child → Screen time → Schedules → School time. The controls visible can vary with the device and account configuration. Family Link supervision does not make every Wear OS watch compatible; consult Google’s child account and Family Link guidance and the device-specific setup information before relying on a watch.

What the restrictions do—and do not—guarantee
- Games and distractions: Ace LTE limits access to games and Bit Valley during its scheduled mode; this is a product-specific description, not a promise about every Wear OS device.
- Incoming calls and messages: Ace LTE silences their notifications during School time. The child can still call and message parents, so test the exact communication behavior with your setup rather than assuming all contact is blocked or guaranteed.
- Schedule: A recurring weekly schedule can be adjusted for a holiday, half day, delayed opening, field trip, early pickup, or after-school activity. Remember to change it when the child’s school-day pattern differs.
- Lunch: Ace LTE can pause School time for a configured lunch period. This may not match recess, transportation, or extracurricular schedules.
- Remote changes: A connected Ace LTE can receive schedule changes immediately; an offline watch may apply them only after reconnecting.
- Power and network: A dead battery removes access to watch-based communication and location. Google warns that Ace LTE features can be affected if the watch does not regularly connect to the internet; see important Ace LTE information.
Google’s documentation describes the mode’s controls but does not establish that every possible bypass is impossible. Treat School time as a helpful restriction, not a tamper-proof lock or an emergency-service guarantee. Confirm that the watch is charged and connected, and test the contact and notification behavior before depending on it.
Is a kids’ smartwatch the right school-day choice?
Fitbit Ace LTE
The Ace LTE is the clearest fit if you want a purpose-built child device with parent-managed contacts, calling, messaging, location features, and a documented school schedule without handing over a conventional smartphone. The trade-off is the ongoing Ace Pass requirement and reliance on the Ace ecosystem, plus the need for reliable battery, network coverage, and school approval. Verify current service pricing and regional support; the launch prices above should not be assumed current.

Supervised Samsung Galaxy Watch
A select supported Galaxy Watch may suit a family already using Samsung hardware that wants a more conventional smartwatch under Family Link supervision. Verify the exact model and setup path before purchase: compatibility, carrier arrangements, region, account supervision, and software can matter. Do not buy a generic Wear OS watch based only on the operating-system name.
When neither is a good fit
Skip a connected watch if the school bans wearables, the child is likely to lose or damage it, the family does not want a recurring cellular service plan, or connectivity and charging cannot be maintained. Depending on school rules and what the child needs, alternatives include a basic non-cellular activity tracker, a school-approved phone kept away during class, a different kids’ cellular watch with documented school and contact controls, or an Android phone supervised with Family Link.

Google announced Fitbit Ace LTE on May 29, 2024, with its child-focused School Time implementation. In August 2024, Google described a planned expansion to select Android devices and Samsung watches; by February 2025, it said the feature was available on Ace LTE and Samsung Galaxy Watch for Kids.
