Google’s Tensor Pixel Watch Chip Was Reportedly Planned for 2026—So What Happened?

Google reportedly planned a custom Tensor-based wearable chip for 2026, but the Pixel Watch 5 launched with Qualcomm silicon instead. Android Authority’s report described an internal early-2023 roadmap for a chip code-named “NPT,” supposedly intended for the Pixel Watch 5 and Tensor G6 phone processor. Current Pixel Watch 5 coverage identifies the watch’s platform as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated. Google has not confirmed that NPT became a shipping product, so the project may have been delayed, canceled, changed, or reserved for a later watch.

What Google reportedly planned

Android Authority reported that documents from Google’s gChips division described a wearable Tensor chip code-named NPT, targeting 2026 alongside the Pixel Watch 5 and the Tensor G6. The reported CPU layout was one Arm Cortex-A78 core and two Cortex-A55 cores. The documents were dated early 2023, and the report warned that the schedule could change. Read the original account at Android Authority.

The report also mentioned that Google was evaluating RISC-V. That was an evaluation note, not confirmation that NPT would use RISC-V, nor confirmation of a final commercial architecture. “NPT” was a reported code name; its expansion and branding were not confirmed by Google.

Why a Google-designed watch chip would matter

A custom SoC could give Google more control over the relationship between the Pixel Watch, Wear OS, Fitbit services, Pixel phones and Gemini features. Those are potential strategic advantages, not demonstrated benefits of NPT.

Google Pixel Watch 5 (45mm) - Android Smartwatch - Obsidian - Wi-Fi
  • The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
  • Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
  • Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
  • Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
  • Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]

More specialized on-device processing

Google could tailor hardware for voice recognition, health signals, sensor fusion and small machine-learning models. A watch-specific design might keep selected workloads local, reducing dependence on a phone or cloud connection.

Power and thermal control

Wearables need sustained efficiency more than smartphone-class peak benchmarks. The reported A78/A55 combination looks old beside current phone processors, but core age alone cannot predict battery life. Process technology, clock speeds, GPU, memory, radio design, power envelope, scheduler and Wear OS optimization would all matter.

Product differentiation and supply control

Google could create features unavailable on generic Wear OS hardware and reduce dependence on Qualcomm’s release schedule. Cost savings or greater supplier independence are reasonable industry possibilities, but there is no cited Google statement saying they were NPT’s specific goals.

Why the reported CPU cores are not enough to judge it

Cortex-A78 was introduced years before the alleged 2026 release, while Cortex-A55 is older still. That can look unimpressive in a smartphone comparison, but a watch SoC cannot be judged from core names alone. The roadmap did not establish the manufacturing node, clock speeds, GPU, neural accelerator, memory bandwidth, modem, radios, thermal limits or battery capacity. It also did not establish whether “Tensor” meant a complete Google-designed SoC or a platform combining Google IP with third-party components.

Android Authority noted that wearable vendors often retain older CPU cores because efficiency and thermals matter more than benchmark leadership. A newer process and carefully designed low-power system can outperform the apparent promise of a newer core running under tighter thermal and battery constraints.

Pixel Watch silicon before the Tensor rumor

Watch Main platform What it shows
Pixel Watch Samsung Exynos silicon The older platform was criticized at launch for speed and power consumption.
Pixel Watch 2 Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 Google moved to Qualcomm’s wearable platform.
Pixel Watch 3 Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 It retained the basic W5 Gen 1 platform.
Pixel Watch 4 Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 plus a Cortex-M55 co-processor Google used hybrid computing and emphasized low-power processing.
Pixel Watch 5 Reportedly Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated It did not launch as the Tensor watch described in the earlier roadmap.

The distinction between a main application processor, a low-power co-processor and Google’s software models is important. Google can add branded AI features without putting a Google-branded main SoC in the watch.

What the Pixel Watch 4 established

Google’s Pixel Watch 4 announcement identifies Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 as the main platform and a Cortex-M55 co-processor for low-power work. Google said the machine-learning co-processor was 25% faster while using half the power of its predecessor. It also estimated up to 30 hours for the 41mm model and 40 hours for the 45mm model with always-on display enabled; Battery Saver estimates were two and three days respectively, with actual life varying by use. Details are in Google’s announcement at Google’s Pixel Watch 4 coverage.

The LTE Pixel Watch 4 also supports standalone emergency satellite communications, with geographic limitations. Qualcomm describes W5 Gen 2 as a 4nm wearable SoC and supports satellite connectivity through narrowband non-terrestrial-network technology in its platform announcement. This illustrates why a co-processor and complete connectivity platform can matter as much as the headline CPU.

What the Pixel Watch 5 actually uses

Google announced the Pixel Watch 5 on August 12, 2026, with retail availability reported for August 20. Current launch coverage identifies it as using a boosted Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated platform and Wear OS 7, not a Tensor main chip. Android Central’s launch report is at Android Central.

A Google Play Console listing reported by 9to5Google showed Qualcomm platform identifier SW5100, four Cortex-A53 cores and an Adreno 702 GPU, consistent with the W5 family. It also reportedly indicated 3GB of RAM, up from 2GB in earlier Pixel Watches. That listing was leak-derived rather than a substitute for a final Google specification sheet. See 9to5Google’s report.

Google’s faster processing and offline-AI claims do not prove Tensor silicon. The narrower conclusion is that the reported 2026 Tensor wearable did not appear in the Pixel Watch 5 specifications reported around launch.

Why Google may have stayed with Qualcomm

  • Maturity: W5 Gen 2 already supports Wear OS power management and had a Pixel Watch deployment.
  • Connectivity: Modem, GPS, Bluetooth, LTE and satellite capabilities require extensive certification and integration.
  • Compatibility: A new SoC can affect health algorithms, drivers, accessories, charging behavior and software support.
  • Risk: A first-generation Google platform could introduce thermal, battery or reliability problems.
  • Schedule: An incremental W5-based update may have been safer than replacing the complete platform.

None of these points proves why NPT did not ship. They explain why Qualcomm could remain the practical choice after a 2023 internal roadmap.

What happened to NPT?

There is no public confirmation that Google canceled it, and no confirmation that it survives unchanged. The plausible explanations are limited to possibilities:

  1. The project was canceled.
  2. It was delayed to a later Pixel Watch.
  3. Google changed the silicon plan after the early-2023 roadmap.
  4. NPT was a development platform rather than a retail product.
  5. A Tensor-branded accelerator or component exists without being marketed as the main watch SoC.

These remain unverified. It would be inaccurate to call the Pixel Watch 5 a rejection of Tensor or to predict Tensor for the Pixel Watch 6.

Would Tensor automatically improve battery life?

No. Battery life depends on the process node, display and refresh policy, LTE modem, GPS and sensor duty cycles, always-on behavior, background software, AI scheduling, battery capacity and thermal limits. Google’s Pixel Watch 4 approach—combining W5 Gen 2 with a low-power co-processor—shows that efficiency is a system-design problem, not a branding consequence.

What a future Tensor watch would need to prove

A Tensor label would not establish an upgrade. Any future announcement should be judged against measurable details:

Should you buy a Pixel Watch or wait?

Buy the Pixel Watch 5

Choose it if you want Google’s newest watch, Wear OS 7 and current Fitbit, Google Health and Gemini integration without waiting for an unannounced chip. Launch coverage reported prices from $399 for 41mm Bluetooth and $429 for 45mm, with LTE versions about $100 higher; verify current pricing and stock at the Google Store.

Buy the Pixel Watch 4

The Pixel Watch 4 remains sensible when discounted. Google’s published specification page lists W5 Gen 2, a Cortex-M55 co-processor, 32GB storage and 2GB RAM. A French Google Store listing showed it from €399 when accessed, but regional pricing and promotions differ: Pixel Watch 4 specifications.

Wait for Tensor

Wait only if owning a confirmed Google-designed wearable chip matters more than having a known product now. The roadmap supplies no reliable release date.

Consider Samsung

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 9 is the principal Wear OS alternative for buyers prioritizing newer high-end wearable silicon and Samsung’s health ecosystem. Comparison coverage says it uses Qualcomm’s newer 3nm Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, while Pixel Watch 5 remains in the W5 Gen 2 family. See Samsung’s watch storefront. Pixel users who prioritize Fitbit and Pixel-phone integration may still prefer Google.

Health, LTE, ECG, blood-oxygen and satellite features vary by country and model. Google’s technical notes also warn that battery estimates vary with features, environment, software and usage: Google’s Pixel Watch specifications and support information.

The Bottom Line

Google reportedly planned a Tensor wearable for 2026, but the Pixel Watch 5 shipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated instead. Tensor remains a plausible future direction—not a confirmed Pixel Watch 5 feature, a confirmed cancellation, or a reliable promise about the next generation.
