Hodinkee Japan describes it as a special model for the Grand Seiko Boutique at Hankyu Umeda, based on the SBGA443. The limited edition was made to mark the department store’s luxury-floor renewal. What makes the dial different?
The SBGA521’s main visual distinction is its violet Sumire palette applied to the Hana-ikada dial pattern. Hana-ikada evokes cherry blossoms gathered on the surface of a river; Sumire means violet. The light-violet and grey tones are accented by blue on the perimeter ring and power-reserve area, while the logo and seconds-hand details use gold tones. Hodinkee Japan reports that the textured dial is stamped using a finely made die, then plated and finished with clear-coat and color layers. Its feature says color samples were reviewed both as dials and in assembled watches, and that the project took nearly a year from planning to completion. These are details reported by the feature, not independently audited manufacturing records.

Case, dimensions and material
The watch uses the 62GS Modern Design, a contemporary interpretation of Grand Seiko’s first automatic-watch design, introduced in 1967. The bezel-less construction leaves the dial open beneath a box-shaped crystal. Plus9Time reports the SBGA521’s dimensions as 40 mm in diameter, 12.8 mm thick and 47 mm lug-to-lug, with a high-intensity titanium case.
What does Spring Drive 9R65 offer?
The 9R65 is a self-winding caliber that can also be wound manually. Grand Seiko lists approximately 72 hours of power reserve, accuracy of ±15 seconds per month (±1 second per day), and 30 jewels. Spring Drive draws its energy from a mainspring and regulates time using electronic technology that includes a quartz oscillator. It requires no battery or other external power source; the 9R65 is not an externally powered quartz movement. Grand Seiko notes that the caliber is used in many of its models, so it is a shared movement rather than an SBGA521-exclusive feature. The edition is limited to 45 pieces, according to Hodinkee Japan’s 2026 coverage.
