The Grand Seiko SLGH021 is a 1,000-piece Evolution 9 mechanical watch whose light-green molded-pattern dial draws on Genbi Valley, a gorge along the Iwai River in Iwate Prefecture. It combines a 40.0 mm Ever-Brilliant Steel case and bracelet with Grand Seiko’s high-beat Calibre 9SA5, an approximately 80-hour power reserve and 10-bar water resistance. Grand Seiko’s New Zealand site lists the watch at NZD 17,900.00, but that regional display should not be treated as a universal price or proof of stock.
What is the Grand Seiko SLGH021 Genbi Valley?
The SLGH021 is an Evolution 9 collection automatic watch and a limited edition of 1,000 pieces. Its design story is tied to Genbi Valley, which Grand Seiko describes as a scenic gorge along the Iwai River in Iwate Prefecture—the region where the company manufactures its mechanical watches. The product page says the gorge extends along a 2 km stretch of the river. Grand Seiko’s official SLGH021 product page describes the dial’s molded pattern and light-green color as an interpretation of the valley’s “grand and mysterious scenery.”

How the Genbi Valley dial is made and styled
The dial uses a newly developed molded pattern rather than a flat, uniform surface. Its light-green tone is intended to recall the valley landscape, while the relief creates changing texture as light moves across it. This is a design interpretation, not a literal image of the gorge: the connection is the color and molded surface inspired by Genbi Valley as described by Grand Seiko.
The watch’s Evolution 9 layout prioritizes legibility and a balanced, contemporary case profile. The official description identifies a box-shaped sapphire crystal with an inner anti-reflective coating, intended to preserve a clear view of the dial while retaining the watch’s shaped-crystal appearance.

Case, bracelet and wearing dimensions
Both the case and bracelet are made from Ever-Brilliant Steel. Grand Seiko says this alloy has a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) 1.7 times that of steel typically used in luxury watches. That is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent durability test.
| Specification | SLGH021 detail |
|---|---|
| Case diameter | 40.0 mm |
| Lug-to-lug | 47.0 mm |
| Thickness | 11.7 mm |
| Band width | 22 mm |
| Case and bracelet | Ever-Brilliant Steel |
| Crystal | Box-shaped sapphire, inner anti-reflective coating |
| Clasp | Folding clasp with push-button release |
| Water resistance | 10 bar |
| Magnetic resistance | 4,800 A/m |
| Weight | 169 g |
The 40.0 mm diameter and 47.0 mm lug-to-lug measurement describe the footprint on the wrist more usefully than diameter alone. At 11.7 mm thick, the case is substantial enough to house the high-beat movement while remaining within a conventional modern sports-watch size. Actual comfort depends on wrist shape, bracelet sizing and personal preference; the published dimensions do not establish a comfort ranking.
Calibre 9SA5 movement and accuracy specifications
Calibre 9SA5 is a self-winding movement that also supports manual winding. Grand Seiko’s official product description states: “The Calibre 9SA5 is a ten-beat movement that is capable of 80 hours of continuous operation when the watch is fully wound.” The stated power reserve is approximately 80 hours.
| Movement measure | Published figure and conditions |
|---|---|
| Mean daily rate | +5 to −3 seconds per day; Grand Seiko measures this before casing, in six positions, under controlled conditions for 12 days |
| Normal-usage accuracy | +8 to −1 seconds per day |
| Winding | Automatic with manual-winding capability |
| Power reserve | Approximately 80 hours |
These two accuracy figures are not interchangeable. The mean daily rate is a controlled pre-assembly measurement, while the normal-usage specification is the separate range Grand Seiko publishes for wear in everyday conditions. Neither figure is presented as an independent laboratory test, and real-world performance can vary with winding state, position, temperature and use.

Caseback, crown and limited-edition markings
The SLGH021 has a screw-down crown and a see-through screw caseback. Grand Seiko specifies a serial number engraved on the caseback together with a “LIMITED EDITION” marking. The transparent back allows the wearer to view Calibre 9SA5, while the 10-bar rating provides the published water-resistance level. Water resistance is a specification for the watch in its stated condition, not a recommendation to operate the crown underwater.
How much does the Grand Seiko SLGH021 cost?
Grand Seiko’s New Zealand product page displays a price of NZD 17,900.00. That is the figure shown for that regional page when accessed in 2026. It is not a worldwide MSRP, does not automatically convert to another country’s retail price, and does not confirm local availability or current stock. Buyers should check the relevant Grand Seiko regional site or an authorized retailer for the currency, taxes, delivery terms and inventory applicable to their location.
