Its 9SA5 movement combines a 36,000-vph high-beat rate with an approximately 80-hour power reserve. This is a specification-led review: the available evidence establishes the manufacturer’s design and technical claims, but not independent wrist impressions or measured performance.
Why is the SLGH005 called the White Birch?
Grand Seiko says the dial takes its inspiration from white-birch forests around its Shizukuishi studio. The brand connects the pale, textured surface with the forest’s straight, light-colored trunks, presenting it as a way to bring that landscape into the watch. That is the maker’s stated design inspiration, rather than an independent assessment of the dial’s resemblance to a particular forest.
The SLGH005’s case and bracelet are stainless steel. Grand Seiko identifies its case design as Series 9 in 2021 launch material and as Evolution 9 on its current US product listing. The design language draws on Grand Seiko Style, established with the 1967 44GS. The manufacturer describes alternating Zaratsu mirror polishing and hairline finishing, as well as broad hands and prominent grooved markers intended to support legibility. Those descriptions are not a substitute for an in-person inspection of finishing, reflections or readability.
What are the SLGH005’s dimensions and construction?
Grand Seiko’s US product listing gives these dimensions and construction details:

What does the 9SA5 movement offer?
The SLGH005 uses Grand Seiko Caliber 9SA5, an automatic high-beat movement specified at 36,000 vibrations per hour, with 47 jewels and approximately 80 hours of power reserve. Grand Seiko attributes the reserve at this beat rate to improved energy efficiency.

The manufacturer describes the movement as having a Dual Impulse Escapement, twin barrels, a free-sprung balance and a horizontal gear train. These are architectural details from Grand Seiko; they do not, on their own, establish independent timekeeping results or long-term reliability.
How to interpret its accuracy figures
Grand Seiko’s current US listing gives two different accuracy figures: a mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day under specified controlled measurement conditions, and a normal-use accuracy range of +8 to -1 seconds per day. They describe different conventions and should not be merged into one claimed tolerance. Neither figure guarantees the result for an individual watch in every wearer’s conditions.

Is the 80-hour reserve useful?
An approximately 80-hour reserve means the movement is specified to continue running for roughly three days after it is fully wound, assuming it is left unworn and the stated reserve is achieved. That can make it easier to set the watch aside over a weekend without it stopping. Actual reserve on a given watch was not independently measured here.
What did the SLGH005 cost at launch, and what is its US list price?
Grand Seiko’s February 2021 Japanese launch announcement set a recommended price of ¥1,045,000, including Japanese tax. The Grand Seiko US product listing showed USD 9,800 on October 4, 2026. These are prices from different markets and dates; they are not directly comparable, and the US list price is not a quote for another region or a guarantee of the transaction price.

What recognition did the White Birch receive?
Grand Seiko announced that the SLGH005 won the 2021 GPHG Men’s Watch Prize. That is a notable historical award, but it is not evidence that the watch will suit every buyer or that it is universally superior to other watches.
