The references mark two generations of Rolex’s platinum Cosmograph Daytona. The 116506 is the earlier model and is no longer in Rolex’s current catalogue; the 126506 is the current reference covered by Rolex’s product specifications as accessed in 2026. Their shared identity remains a 40 mm platinum Daytona with a ceramic tachymetric bezel, while the clearest differences are the case back, movement and dial details.

Why the 126506 has a display case back
The most conspicuous construction change is the move from the 116506’s closed platinum back to a transparent sapphire back on the 126506. Rolex’s newsroom says the 950-platinum Daytona has featured a sapphire display back since 2023, with an anti-reflective coating that lets the wearer see the movement’s decoration and the oscillating weight in motion. The 126506 was the first Rolex sports watch with a display case back, according to Fratello’s January 31, 2024 comparison.
That makes the case back more than a cosmetic update: it gives the newer reference a view of a mechanism the older watch keeps hidden. Choose the 116506 if you prefer the uninterrupted, closed-back look; choose the 126506 if seeing the movement is part of the appeal.

How much better is calibre 4131 than calibre 4130?
The 126506 replaces the earlier generation’s calibre 4130 with calibre 4131. Rolex lists the current watch at approximately 72 hours of power reserve and −2/+2 seconds per day after casing. Those are the figures Rolex specifies for the 126506; they should not be treated as specifications for the 116506. The comparison material identifies the 116506’s movement as calibre 4130 but does not establish a like-for-like set of performance figures for it.
So the evidence supports calling the 4131 the newer movement generation, but it does not support a quantified claim about how much more accurate or capable it is than the 4130 in ordinary wear. The clearest practical distinction established here is that the current reference combines the newer calibre with a movement visible through its display back.

Which dial looks better?
The answer depends on whether you want the earlier diamond-set look or the current model’s more restrained applied markers. Fratello’s hands-on comparison describes the old 116506 example as having baguette-cut diamond indexes. Rolex’s current 126506 product page shows applied hour markers, an ice-blue dial and chestnut-brown counter rings. These descriptions refer to the compared example and the current Rolex-listed configuration; they do not establish that every 116506 has the same dial.
The brown rings and bezel give the 126506 a coordinated color scheme, while the diamond indexes make the cited 116506 example more jewelry-like. Neither treatment changes the watches’ underlying platinum Daytona identity, but it is a useful way to decide which generation feels more like your watch.

Are the case, bracelet and wearing feel different?
Rolex specifies the 126506 as a 40 mm case in 950 platinum, with an Oyster bracelet made from solid three-piece links, an Oysterlock clasp and a 5 mm Easylink comfort extension. The 116506 and 126506 share the platinum Daytona format, but the supplied comparison does not provide a matched pair of weights, bracelet specifications or fit measurements. There is therefore no reliable basis here to claim that one feels heavier or fits differently on the wrist.
For the current reference, Rolex also specifies a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, screw-down crown and case back with its Triplock waterproofness system, and water resistance to 100 metres / 330 feet. Those are 126506 specifications, not values to assume for the discontinued reference.

Is the 126506 worth choosing over the 116506?
There is no universal winner. The right choice depends on which generation’s character and ownership route matter more to you:
- Choose the 116506 if you specifically want the earlier closed-back design and the diamond-set dial treatment shown in the cited comparison. It is discontinued, so finding one means looking beyond Rolex’s current catalogue.
- Choose the 126506 if you want calibre 4131, a transparent case back, the current applied-marker dial treatment and a watch currently listed by Rolex.

What should buyers check when acquiring either reference?
Rolex says only official Rolex jewelers are allowed to sell and maintain its watches. For the current model, consult an official Rolex jeweler for availability and service. Since the 116506 is no longer current, a pre-owned purchase calls for particular care with provenance and condition; do not assume that a marketplace or individual seller is an authorized Rolex channel.
