The Omega Speedmaster “Blue Side of the Moon,” reference 304.93.44.52.03.001, pairs a 44.25 mm blue-ceramic case and dial with an automatic chronograph, date display and moonphase. It is a substantial, distinctive watch; the dimensions and layered dial are as important to consider as its color-shifting ceramic finish.
What is the Blue Side of the Moon?
Reference 304.93.44.52.03.001 is Omega’s blue-ceramic Speedmaster Co-Axial Master Chronometer Moonphase. Its blue ceramic extends across the case, dial and moonphase disc. Omega specifies 18K white-gold hands and indexes, with Liquidmetal details on the moon display. The sapphire crystal is scratch-resistant and treated with anti-reflective coating on both sides. Omega’s Hong Kong product listing identifies the exact reference and specifications.
The watch’s color is not visually static. In a January 2, 2018 hands-on, Fratello’s Robert-Jan Broer described the blue as more intense in daylight and darker indoors or in shade; he preferred the darker tone and advised trying it before buying unseen. Time+Tide’s Felix Scholz, writing on February 23, 2018, described the ceramic shifting from near-navy in some light to iridescent when light strikes it. These are reviewers’ impressions, not standardized color or fit tests. Fratello’s 2018 hands-on and Time+Tide’s 2018 review provide those dated observations.
How large is the Blue Side of the Moon?
Omega lists a 44.25 mm case diameter, 49.80 mm lug-to-lug length and 17.04 mm thickness, with 21 mm between the lugs. The listed weight is approximately 107 g. These dimensions make wrist fit an important personal consideration: the diameter is only part of the picture, while the lug-to-lug span and thickness affect how the watch sits and wears beneath a cuff. Broer called the case pleasant on wrist in his 2018 review, but that observation cannot establish how it will fit an individual wearer.

What does calibre 9904 do?
The self-winding Omega calibre 9904 is a chronograph movement with a column wheel and Co-Axial escapement. Omega lists a 60-hour power reserve, two barrels in series, a silicon balance-spring and METAS Master Chronometer approval. Omega also specifies resistance to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss. These are manufacturer specifications; they do not by themselves describe a particular wearer’s daily accuracy or operating conditions.

Its indications combine timekeeping with several complications:
- Central hour and minute hands, plus central chronograph seconds.
- Small seconds.
- A hand-indicated date.
- 12-hour and 60-minute chronograph recorders.
- A moonphase display.
The chronograph, calendar and moonphase functions give the dial more information than a simple three-hand Speedmaster. Fratello describes calibre 9904 as a variation in the 9300 family; Omega’s own listing is the source for the movement’s named functions and technical specifications.

How legible is the dial?
The dial arranges the date and hour indications together in the subdial at nine o’clock. Scholz noted in his 2018 review that this arrangement contributes to visual balance but can make the indications less legible. That is a useful point to inspect in person: the dial’s layered layout is part of the watch’s appeal, but whether it remains quick to read is individual and depends on viewing conditions.
The moonphase display adds another focal point, including near and far moon faces. Omega describes the blue ceramic dial and moonphase disc, white-gold hands and indexes, and Liquidmetal details; the resulting display is more decorative and intricate than a conventional date-only chronograph.

How does the aventurine version differ?
Reference 304.93.44.52.03.002 is a separate variant, not another name for the .001. Omega identifies the .002 by its aventurine-glass dial; it shares the blue ceramic case and calibre 9904 with the blue-dial .001. Check the full reference when comparing photographs, product listings or condition reports, since calling the aventurine model the .001 misidentifies the watch.

What should a buyer check?
- Fit: Assess the 44.25 mm diameter, 49.80 mm lug-to-lug span and 17.04 mm thickness on your own wrist rather than relying on another reviewer’s fit impression.
- Dial reading: Check whether the combined date/hour subdial and other indications are easy for you to read at a glance.
- Exact variant: Match the reference number to the blue ceramic .001 or aventurine .002 dial before relying on a listing or image caption.
- Offer details: Verify current condition, seller, availability and price directly with the seller or an authorized retailer. Omega’s regional product page does not establish local stock.
The 2018 reviews quoted historical prices—Fratello reported €11,800 including sales taxes for the .001, while Time+Tide listed A$16,950. Those are dated figures, not current quotes; no current price is established here.

Why is it called the Speedmaster Moonphase?
The Moonphase designation refers to the lunar display alongside the chronograph and calendar. Omega’s product description says, as manufacturer copy, “The Speedmaster is one of OMEGA’s most iconic timepieces, having been a part of all six lunar missions.” That brand statement is context for the collection, not an independent finding about this specific reference.
