Balazs Ferenczi’s Fratello review, published October 23, 2019, is a firsthand look at a revived TROPIC® strap—not a current test of today’s stock. Although Ferenczi found a vintage strap marked “19mm Tropic Sport,” the modern strap he reviewed was the revived Classic style. Its appeal, in his account, came down to vintage looks, comfortable wear and the difficulty he had finding vintage examples.
What the 2019 review actually covers
Ferenczi describes collecting vintage Tropic straps and comparing those finds with the contemporary revival. The distinction in the naming matters: his discovery of a strap marked “19mm Tropic Sport” is part of the vintage story; the modern strap he reviews is described as the revived Classic style. The review should not be read as a reproduction guide to every historical Sport variant or as an evaluation of the product currently sold.
His short explanation of the appeal was: “They look cool, they wear comfortably, and they look just perfect on most vintage divers or sports watches.” The review’s answer to why collectors prize them is personal rather than statistical: the distinctive look, comfortable wear and the challenge Ferenczi experienced in finding vintage examples.

| Detail | 2019 review |
|---|---|
| Lug width | 20mm |
| Buckle width | 16mm |
| Long half | 12.5cm |
| Short half | 8.5cm |
| Taper | 4mm |
Ferenczi praised the modern strap’s comfort and quality, while noting that its buckle differed from those on vintage examples. That makes the article useful as a collector’s comparison and account of a specific revival, but not as a current fit check or independent durability test.
Current sizes, materials and price
The current official TROPIC® product page lists genuine straps in 20mm and 22mm lug widths. It describes a vulcanized rubber strap with a perforated basket-weave texture, a signed stainless-steel buckle and quick-drying comfort. TROPIC® says the straps are manufactured and quality tested in Italy by Synchron; the material and performance descriptions are the brand’s claims, not independent test results.

Choose the width that matches the watch’s lug spacing rather than relying on the vintage “19mm” marking or the 2019 review dimensions. The maker’s current product page lists 20mm and 22mm options; it does not establish that every historical size or version is available today.
The official Synchron store displayed the Original TROPIC® strap at $89.00 on October 4, 2026. That is a dated store snapshot; price, stock and regional taxes can change.

How to check that a TROPIC® strap is genuine
TROPIC® is a brand name, not simply a description of a basket-weave pattern. The manufacturer says a genuine strap has the TROPIC® name embossed on the inside and identifies its own website and the official Synchron shop as routes to buy the genuine product. A similar-looking weave by itself is not proof of authenticity.
The manufacturer describes the current strap as made in Italy from proprietary vulcanized natural rubber. These origin and material details are manufacturer statements. For the product’s current sizes and purchase options, consult the [official TROPIC® product page](https://tropicstrap.com/products/original-tropic-strap/) and [Synchron Store listing](https://synchronusa.com/products/tropic-strap).

TROPIC® or ISOfrane®: which profile suits your watch?
The comparison below reflects the shared maker’s July 2026 positioning of its two strap lines, not independent comparative testing. Fit, profile and ventilation are more useful selection criteria than assuming one is universally better.
| Consideration | TROPIC® | ISOfrane® |
|---|---|---|
| Profile | Maker describes it as slim, light and tapered | Maker describes it as more substantial |
| Ventilation | Perforated basket-weave texture | Open ladder-slot design |
| Listed widths | 20mm and 22mm | Includes a 24mm option |
| Historical association | Maker positions it with mid-century dive-watch styling | Not stated in the maker’s comparison |
| Price | $89.00 displayed by Synchron on October 4, 2026; subject to change | Not stated in the maker’s comparison |
Start with your watch’s lug width. Then consider whether a slimmer, tapered silhouette and basket-weave pattern or a more substantial profile and ladder-slot ventilation better suit the watch and your preference. Buckle preference also matters: Ferenczi specifically noted that the buckle on the 2019 revived strap differed from vintage examples.

What the brand’s history says
In a history published July 14, 2026, TROPIC® says the strap was introduced in 1955 and that Synchron acquired the brand and assets in 2003. The same brand account connects the strap with mid-century dive watches and says BestFit distributed it in the United States. These are the company’s historical claims; the sources cited here do not independently corroborate that archival account.
