The original Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8, reference 311.92.44.30.01.001, pairs a 44.25 mm black ceramic case with a manually wound Calibre 1869 and a lunar-surface motif cut into the movement. Its 49.8 mm lug-to-lug span matters as much as the headline diameter when judging fit. A short Hodinkee try-on found it comfortable despite its width, but that is one reviewer’s brief impression—not a promise about how it will wear on your wrist.

What the original Apollo 8 is

This is the first Apollo 8 version, reference 311.92.44.30.01.001, not the updated 2024 model. Omega’s listing describes a black ceramic case and dial, a manually wound Calibre 1869, and a 48-hour power reserve. The watch has a date-free, three-register chronograph display.

The dark, openworked appearance is more than a surface graphic: Omega says the blackened movement is laser-ablated to evoke the Moon’s terrain. Its near side is visible through the skeletonised dial, while the far side appears through the exhibition caseback. Yellow varnished chronograph hands and a Super-LumiNova tachymeter scale provide contrast against the black surfaces. Specialist coverage also notes a small-seconds hand inspired by the Saturn V rocket.

Case, dimensions and fit

Specification Original Apollo 8, ref. 311.92.44.30.01.001
Case diameter 44.25 mm (Omega)
Lug-to-lug 49.8 mm (Omega)
Thickness 13.8 mm (Omega)
Lug width 21 mm (Omega)
Approximate weight 89 g (Omega)
Water resistance 5 bar / 50 m (Omega)

At 44.25 mm across, this is a large watch by conventional case-diameter standards. The 49.8 mm lug-to-lug measurement is useful for comparing how far the case may extend across the top of your wrist; wrist shape and the curvature of your wrist matter too. Hodinkee’s reviewer called the watch large, but found the 13.8 mm thickness notably slimmer than earlier Dark Side models and reported comfort during a try-on of roughly five to ten minutes. Treat that as a limited personal observation rather than a fit test for other wrists.

Omega
  • Model 310.30.42.50.01.002

The crystal is scratch-resistant sapphire with anti-reflective treatment on both sides. Omega lists a perforated black leather strap with a yellow rubber interior, matching the yellow accents on the dial. The 21 mm lug width can help narrow a replacement-strap search, but width alone does not establish that a strap’s end shape, hardware or fit is compatible.

Movement and Apollo 8 details

Calibre 1869 is the original’s manually wound movement, with a stated 48-hour reserve. The exposed construction makes the lunar decoration central to the watch’s character: the dial side shows one face of the laser-ablated movement and the caseback shows the other. The caseback is engraved “APOLLO 8, DEC 1968”, “DARK SIDE OF THE MOON” and “WE’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE.” Omega presents the last phrase as an engraving connected to the Apollo 8 story; it should be read as the watch’s inscription, not as independently verified transcript evidence.

Original 311 versus updated 310

The later Apollo 8 is reference 310.92.44.50.01.001, introduced in 2024. It changes the movement and some case and strap details, so specifications for the newer watch should not be attributed to the original.

Original: 311.92.44.30.01.001 Updated: 310.92.44.50.01.001
Movement Calibre 1869, manual winding (Omega) Calibre 3869, manual winding (Time and Watches; Monochrome)
Power reserve 48 hours (Omega) 50 hours (Time and Watches; Monochrome)
Case dimensions 44.25 mm diameter; 49.8 mm lug-to-lug; 13.8 mm thick (Omega) 44.25 mm diameter; 50 mm lug-to-lug; 13 mm thick (Monochrome)
Weight Approximately 89 g (Omega) 99 g (Monochrome)
Water resistance 50 m (Omega) 50 m (Monochrome)
Strap Perforated black leather with yellow rubber interior (Omega) Rubber strap with folding clasp (Monochrome)
Certification Not stated in the cited Omega listing Co-Axial Master Chronometer (Time and Watches; Monochrome)

Time and Watches reports that the updated Calibre 3869 is tested for Master Chronometer certification, including exposure to a 15,000-gauss magnetic field. That certification and movement specification belong to the 310 reference; they are not specifications of the original 311. A Time and Watches reviewer reported comfortable wear on a 17.7 cm wrist and credited the newer watch’s short, curved lugs, but that too is a reviewer’s observation, not a guarantee of fit.

Availability and price context

Omega’s Hong Kong regional product listing marks reference 311.92.44.30.01.001 as no longer available on that page. That regional status does not establish worldwide discontinuation or current pre-owned availability. Confirm the specific market, seller, condition and current price before making a buying decision.

For context only, Hodinkee’s earlier hands-on coverage gave US$9,750 as a launch-era price for the original. It is historical, not a current quote. Prices reported for the updated reference are different: Time and Watches reported €15,900 including VAT and US$14,300 excluding local sales taxes on June 10, 2024; Monochrome reported €15,700, CHF13,500 and US$14,300 in its 2024 coverage. These are dated reports for the newer 310 reference, with differing market and tax bases, not directly comparable current prices.
