The 2021 Seiko Prospex 1968 Diver’s Modern Re-Interpretation watches are the black SLA057J1 and Antarctic-blue SLA055J1. Both reinterpret the 1968 Automatic Diver 300m Hi-Beat 6159-7001, but use modern specifications: a 42.6 mm case, 200 m water resistance and automatic calibre 8L35. The hands-on review also compares them with the previous-year SPB185. These reference numbers matter: Seiko has used the 1968 Heritage name for later, materially different watches, including GMT models.
What the 1968 Diver’s Modern Re-Interpretation name covers
The exact-title hands-on review concerns two limited 2021 editions: SLA057J1 in black and SLA055J1 in Antarctic blue. It also compares them with the SPB185. They are not the later GMT watches that share design cues and the broader 1968 heritage.
Seiko traces the design to its 1968 Automatic Diver 300m Hi-Beat, reference 6159-7001. In its historical account, Seiko describes that original as having a 10-beat high-frequency movement and a one-piece case rated to 300 m. Seiko also says Japanese mountaineers Naomi Uemura and Teruo Matsuura carried the watch during their 1970 Mount Everest ascent. Those are details of the historical watch, not specifications of the modern SLA references. Seiko’s 1968 Heritage account.
What the SLA057J1 and SLA055J1 are like
In Fratello’s 2021 hands-on review, both references measure 42.6 mm across and 13.1 mm thick. They are rated to 200 m water resistance and use automatic calibre 8L35, with 26 jewels and a reported 50-hour power reserve. Fratello gives the movement’s normal-temperature accuracy rating as −10 to +15 seconds per day. These are reported specifications for the SLA watches, not claims about every model under the 1968 Heritage label.

| Reference | Dial and impression | Straps reported | Edition and article-era price |
|---|---|---|---|
| SLA057J1 | Black; reviewer considered it the more conservative option and closer in spirit to the 1968 ancestor | Silicone strap plus an additional woven polyester strap made using Japanese seichu braiding | Limited to 600 pieces; Fratello reported €4,600 at publication in 2021 |
| SLA055J1 | Antarctic blue; reviewer described it as cooler and more contemporary | Silicone strap plus an additional woven polyester strap made using Japanese seichu braiding | Limited to 1,300 pieces; Fratello reported €4,600 at publication in 2021 |
The color descriptions are the reviewer’s subjective impressions. The prices and edition sizes are facts reported in Fratello’s December 2021 article, not current prices or confirmation of present availability. Read Fratello’s SLA057J1 and SLA055J1 review.
How the SPB185 comparison differs
Fratello characterizes the previous-year SPB185 as sharper and more contemporary-looking than the nostalgic SLA pair. It comes on a metal bracelet, while the reviewed SLA references use silicone straps and include an additional woven polyester strap. The comparison is useful for design and wearing-format context, but the review does not establish a full specification comparison here; do not assume the SLA dimensions or movement apply to the SPB185.

How to distinguish the later GMT watches
Seiko’s 2023 1968 Heritage GMT models are SPB381 (green), SPB383 (black) and limited SPB385. They are a separate generation from SLA057J1 and SLA055J1, with calibre 6R54, a 72-hour power reserve, an independently adjustable GMT hand, a ceramic unidirectional bezel and 200 m water resistance. Seiko lists the SPB385 as limited to 4,000 pieces. These specifications belong to the GMT references, not the SLA watches or SPB185. Seiko’s 1968 Heritage GMT information.

Even non-GMT watches associated with the 1968 design can have different specifications. Seiko Boutique UK lists SPB240J1 with calibre 6R35, a 70-hour power reserve, a 42.0 mm diameter, 12.5 mm thickness, 48.8 mm case length, 20 mm lug width, sapphire crystal and 20 bar water resistance. That is a different reference from the SLA pair; its dimensions and strap fit should not be transferred to them. Seiko Boutique UK’s SPB240J1 listing.

What to check before buying or sourcing a strap
- Match the full reference. SLA057J1, SLA055J1, SPB185, SPB240J1 and the SPB381/383/385 GMT trio are not interchangeable names for one watch.
- Confirm the listing’s region and condition. The 2021 review’s €4,600 prices are historical article-era figures; current stock and secondary-market prices are not established by those figures.
- Check strap fit against the specific watch. The reviewed SLA models came with silicone and woven polyester straps. The documented 20 mm lug width is for SPB240J1 only, so it does not establish fit for the SLA references.
