A 2022 hands-on report offers an appealing glimpse of the watch on wrist, but its sample was an early prototype—not a guide to every current specification.
What makes the Manhattan 37 look like a 1970s watch?
MAEN calls the Manhattan 37 “a modern re-interpretation of landmark timepieces from the 1970’s.” The design language is clear: a steel case with a vertically elongated octagonal bezel, a Côtes de Genève dial and a steel bracelet that flows directly into the case rather than attaching through conventional lugs. Polished and satin-brushed surfaces add contrast to the angular profile.
The result is dressy without relying on a round case and separate lugs. Its strongest visual signature is the bezel-and-bracelet outline; the dial texture supplies a more restrained detail that shifts the watch from simple geometric styling toward something more elaborate.
How do the 37 mm dimensions translate on wrist?
MAEN lists a 37 mm diameter, 9.3 mm thickness and 47 mm lug-to-lug height for the collection. The last measurement describes the case’s length across the wrist, but an integrated bracelet changes how the watch reads: the bracelet begins at the case edges, extending the continuous visual footprint. MAEN itself says the watch wears larger than its nominal diameter suggests.

That makes 37 mm a useful starting point, not a guarantee that the watch will feel small. Wrist shape, bracelet fit and personal preference matter, particularly with a broad, angular case-and-bracelet silhouette. The bracelet tapers from 22 mm at the case to 16 mm and closes with a butterfly clasp.
Which current versions and specifications should buyers distinguish?
MAEN’s collection information lists several configurations. Check the exact reference before comparing movement, date display or dial: the collection includes La Joux-Perret G100 and Sellita SW200-1 options, and its listed configurations are not interchangeable by assumption.

The official collection page also lists a 316L stainless-steel case and bracelet, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and 10 ATM water resistance. The IFL.01 page separately gives the collaboration edition’s 37 mm case, 9.3 mm thickness, 47 mm lug-to-lug, sapphire crystal, 316L steel and 10 ATM rating. Its hand-painted dial is a distinct special edition, not another standard color.

What did the 2022 hands-on review actually find?
Thor Svaboe’s Fratello article, published February 18, 2022, describes trying on a Salmon-dial prototype. He found the 37 mm proportions comfortable on wrist and noted the 9.3 mm thickness and 47 mm lug-to-lug. His most specific visual observation was that the dial shifted among copper, bronze and salmon impressions as the light changed. That is a reviewer’s account of one sample, not a current production-watch test.
Crucially, Svaboe identifies the watch as “one of the first prototypes” and says subtle changes were planned for later deliveries. He also notes planned logo and lume differences. The prototype used a Ronda R-150 with a stated 40-hour power reserve. That movement and reserve belong to the sample described in the 2022 article; they should not be substituted for the G100 and SW200-1 configurations MAEN lists now.

The design is aimed at someone who wants the bracelet to be part of the watch’s architecture, not merely a strap choice. The angular bezel, textured dial and continuous steel profile make it a more prominent style statement than the diameter might suggest. If you prefer a rubber strap or a conventional round case with visible lugs, the Manhattan’s defining feature may be the very thing that makes it less appealing.

Fratello’s closing question—whether readers feel the urge to try an integrated bracelet or prefer a rubber strap—is best taken as an invitation to consider that preference, not as a claim about what watch buyers generally want. The practical next step is to inspect the specific dial and movement reference, then assess the integrated case-and-bracelet shape against your wrist rather than judging fit from “37 mm” alone.
