Its fixed strap bars, bidirectional bezel and Marine Nationale-inspired design make it distinctive; those same choices make it less versatile than a conventional Pelagos for many owners.
What the Pelagos FXD is
The original Pelagos FXD (reference 25717N) is a 42 mm titanium diver designed around a military specification rather than a conventional recreational-dive formula. “FXD” refers to the fixed strap-bar construction: the bars are machined into the case instead of using removable spring bars, reducing the risk of a strap detaching during service.

Tudor gives the case a sapphire crystal, a 60-minute ceramic bezel insert and 200 metres of water resistance. The case is 12.75 mm thick, measures 52 mm from lug to lug and accepts 22 mm straps. There is no date window, a useful omission for a watch whose purpose is legibility and timing rather than calendar display.
How it wears on the wrist
The titanium case keeps the FXD comfortable, but the watch does not feel small. The broad bezel makes it appear larger than its 42 mm diameter suggests, while the 52 mm lug-to-lug span matters more than the headline case measurement on smaller wrists.

- Featuring a Blue Band, Black Case, Scratch Resistant Sapphire Crystal
- Display Type: Analog
- Item Shape: Round
On a 19 cm wrist, Broer reports that the FXD “wears fantastically.” Tudor’s supplied fabric strap is 22 mm wide, forest green and finished with red thread; a black rubber strap is also included. NATO-style straps can add noticeable height, so strap choice changes the watch’s profile as well as its appearance.
The bezel is the crucial compromise
Unlike a standard dive watch, the FXD uses a bidirectional 120-click bezel. That is consistent with its French Navy-oriented brief, but it means the watch does not meet ISO 6425:2018 dive-watch standards, which require a unidirectional timing bezel. The 200 m water-resistance rating remains substantial, yet water resistance and ISO dive-watch compliance are separate things.
In practical terms, a bidirectional bezel can be moved in either direction if it is knocked. A conventional unidirectional bezel can only reduce the indicated remaining time, a safety-oriented behavior for underwater timing. The FXD therefore makes sense as a purpose-built military instrument, not as a no-compromise substitute for every conventional dive watch.

Movement and daily operation
Inside is Tudor’s manufacture calibre MT5602. It is self-winding, COSC-certified, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), uses a silicon balance spring and provides approximately 70 hours of power reserve. That reserve is long enough for the watch to keep running through much of a weekend off the wrist.
The no-date layout keeps setting simple: there is only the time to adjust, with no date mechanism to correct after the watch has stopped. The movement specification is shared with the broader Pelagos family, so the FXD’s personality comes primarily from its case, bezel and strap system.
FXD versus a standard Pelagos
| Feature | Pelagos FXD | Standard Pelagos models |
|---|---|---|
| Case | 42 mm titanium; 12.75 mm thick; 52 mm lug-to-lug | Model-dependent; the cited comparison does not establish one universal dimension set |
| Bezel | Bidirectional, 120 clicks, ceramic 60-minute insert | Conventional unidirectional dive-bezel implementations |
| Water resistance | 200 m; does not meet ISO 6425:2018 because of the bidirectional bezel | Conventional dive-watch configuration |
| Strap attachment | Fixed titanium bars; supplied 22 mm fabric and rubber straps | Removable strap/bracelet arrangements; bracelet availability depends on model |
| Movement | MT5602, COSC-certified, 4 Hz, approximately 70-hour reserve | Pelagos-family manufacture movements; exact calibre depends on model |
| Launch pricing | Positioned below the standard Pelagos at launch | €4,320 / $4,575 at the standard-model launch cited by Fratello |

Why the fixed bars matter
Fixed bars eliminate a common spring-bar failure point, which is valuable when a watch is used with military-style fabric straps or in demanding conditions. They also remove the normal convenience of swapping to any bracelet or strap designed for ordinary spring bars.
Before ordering a replacement 22 mm strap, confirm that it is compatible with fixed bars. Width alone does not guarantee fit: the strap must be able to pass through the FXD’s fixed geometry without relying on removable spring bars.

What makes the design appealing
- Purposeful construction: titanium, fixed bars and a military-derived layout give the watch a coherent reason for being.
- Comfort: the relatively thin 12.75 mm case and light titanium are easy to wear, especially on the supplied fabric strap.
- Legibility: the dark blue dial, no-date display and broad timing bezel keep the design focused.
- Movement capability: COSC certification and approximately 70 hours of reserve provide a strong technical foundation.
Why it may not be the one you want
- Bezel behavior: buyers who expect a conventional dive watch may reject the bidirectional design and its ISO limitation.
- Strap restrictions: fixed bars make experimentation more selective and rule out many standard bracelet options.
- Wrist presence: the broad bezel and 52 mm lug-to-lug measurement can make the watch feel larger than its diameter implies.
- Role specificity: the military rationale is compelling, but some owners will prefer the broader everyday flexibility of a standard Pelagos.
The personal verdict
Broer’s conclusion captures the distinction between quality and preference: “I’ve come to the conclusion this watch is not for me. It could have been, but it isn’t.” That is not a criticism of the FXD’s build or engineering. It reflects a preference for a more conventional dive-watch setup, with fewer compromises in bezel operation and strap choice.
Choose the FXD if its Marine Nationale-inspired purpose, fixed bars and unusual bezel are the reasons you want it. Choose a standard Pelagos if you prioritize conventional dive-watch operation, easier strap or bracelet changes and a less specialized ownership experience.
