Reference 4200H/222A-B934 combines the 222’s monobloc tonneau case, fluted bezel and integrated bracelet with a matte-blue dial, modern automatic movement and a more wearable stainless-steel execution.
What the steel Historiques 222 is
The Historiques 222 was created for Vacheron Constantin’s 222nd anniversary in 1977. The new stainless-steel edition keeps the design cues that make the original instantly recognizable while presenting them as a contemporary luxury sports watch. Vacheron Constantin describes it as retaining the original’s distinctive design and nostalgic charm while being “resolutely contemporary.”
The exact reference is 4200H/222A-B934, also shown as X42AB934. It arrives on an integrated stainless-steel bracelet and carries the Geneva Seal.

How it differs from the 1977 and gold 222
The design language is deliberately continuous
The steel model preserves the 222’s bold monobloc tonneau profile, fluted bezel, integrated bracelet and Maltese cross positioned at 5 o’clock. The vintage-style “AUTOMATIC” lettering and blue dial reinforce the historical connection, while the luminous treatment makes the watch easier to read in contemporary use.

Steel changes the character more than the architecture
Relative to the gold 222 that established the model’s luxury-sports identity, stainless steel gives the reissue a less formal visual register without changing its signature case-and-bracelet layout. The published product details cited here do not establish a separate set of dimensions for the gold version, so the comparison is primarily about material and presence rather than a claimed size difference.
It is an interpretation, not a museum replica
The 2025 watch adds a sapphire display back, updated bracelet construction, modern lume and a current manufacture movement. Fratello’s hands-on conclusion captures the distinction: the watch is “not a retro watch but, rather, a reinterpretation.”
Wearing the 222 in steel
Compact case, broad bracelet footprint
The case dimensions are restrained by modern integrated-bracelet standards, while the independent lug-to-lug measurement shows that the bracelet still spreads across the wrist more broadly than the diameter alone suggests. That combination should suit many medium-sized wrists, but the watch’s visual footprint will depend on wrist shape and how far the integrated links extend beyond the case.
Bracelet ergonomics
Vacheron Constantin says the bracelet joints were redesigned to conceal visible pins and improve ergonomics. The mix of polished and satin-finished surfaces gives the bracelet more visual definition than an entirely brushed sports bracelet, and the triple-blade clasp keeps the closure integrated with the overall design.

What daily practicality means here
The 50-metre rating supports ordinary daily wear and incidental water exposure, but the watch is not presented as a professional dive instrument. The date display, luminous hands and markers, automatic winding and relatively thin profile all make it a practical everyday luxury watch; the integrated bracelet means replacement or sizing work should be handled through a qualified Vacheron Constantin service channel.
Calibre 2455/2: strengths and context
The automatic Calibre 2455/2 runs at 4 Hz and includes a stop-balance function for more precise setting. Its 194 components and 27 jewels are visible through the sapphire caseback, where the decorated oscillating weight carries the 222 logo and the watch bears the 270th-anniversary signature.

Approximately 40 hours of reserve is adequate for daily rotation, but it is shorter than the multi-day reserves found in some newer integrated-bracelet competitors. Hodinkee’s review places the 2455/2 in that newer ultra-thin movement context and treats its relative age as an evaluative point, not as a manufacturer defect claim. The Geneva Seal remains the formal certification attached to the finished watch.

Pricing is region- and channel-dependent. At the time of a 2026 retrieval, one U.S. regional Vacheron Constantin page displayed US$48,400 excluding tax; another regional official page listed the watch as price on request. Those figures should not be treated as a universal global retail price.

Vacheron Constantin’s official pages direct prospective buyers to boutique appointments and interest registration. The public information cited here does not establish production quantity, allocation policy, wait-list duration, stock status, discounts or secondary-market premiums, so none of those should be assumed when evaluating an offer.
Verdict
The steel Historiques 222 succeeds by preserving the proportions and graphic signatures that made the 1977 design important while making the watch feel less tied to precious metal. Its strongest arguments are the compact tonneau case, carefully executed integrated bracelet, blue-and-lume dial and Geneva-Seal finishing. The main practical compromises are the 50-metre water rating and a power reserve that is modest beside the newest long-reserve movements. At the official U.S. price shown above, it is best understood as a historically literate, high-luxury reinterpretation rather than a value alternative to integrated-bracelet sports watches.
