Garmin tracks an indoor bike through heart-rate data and compatible bike or trainer sensors—not through ordinary GPS. A Garmin watch can record time, heart rate and calculated calories on almost any stationary bike. Reliable cadence, power, speed and distance require a cadence sensor, power meter, wheel-speed sensor, compatible exercise bike or smart trainer.

What Garmin can—and cannot—track indoors

Selecting Indoor Cycling or Bike Indoor organizes the workout; it does not create cycling measurements by itself. Your results depend on the data sources connected to the watch or Edge.

Metric Without accessories? Usual source
Elapsed time Yes Garmin device
Heart rate Often Optical sensor or chest strap
Calories Estimate Garmin algorithms using available inputs
Cadence Usually no Cadence sensor, smart trainer or bike broadcast
Power No Power meter, smart trainer or compatible bike
Speed Usually no Speed sensor, trainer or bike broadcast
Distance Usually no Wheel rotations or a trainer/app calculation
GPS route No meaningful route GPS is not the indoor-bike source

Training effect, training load, recovery guidance and calories are calculated from recorded inputs. They are not direct measurements from the exercise bike. A virtual speed or simulated grade is also a model, not an indoor route distance.

Does Garmin use GPS indoors?

Indoor rides normally use an indoor activity profile rather than an outdoor cycling profile. GPS cannot measure a useful route on a stationary bike. Garmin can calculate speed and distance from trainer or wheel rotations, while an app may calculate “virtual speed” from power, simulated gradient, rider characteristics and its own algorithm. See Garmin’s explanation of these differences at Garmin Support.

Magene Outdoor/Indoor Speed/Cadence Sensor for Cycling, Wireless Bluetooth/Ant+ Bike Computer RPM Sensor for Road Bike or Spinning Bike and Trainers Compatible with Onelap, Wahoo Fitness, Zwift
  • [Battery] Remove the insulating sheet of the pre-installed battery before usage; re-install the battery to switch between the speed and cadence mode.
  • [Mode] 1 sensor can ONLY select one mode (Speed or Cadence) at the one time.So you need 2 sensors to test both speed and cadence.(1 for speed,1 for cadence)
  • [Device] When using the Bluetooth protocol 1 sensor can ONLY connect to 1 APP or device concurrently; When using ANT+ protocol it can be connected to multiple devices at the same time.
  • [Connection] When using a smart phone APP, you need to search for the sensor in the APP, searching through the phone system’s Bluetooth setting is invalid.
  • [Hibernation] S3+ sensor will automatically enter the sleep state for 1 minute to save power after the sensor is stationary, the sensor will ONLY start sending broadcasts after it is properly woken-up.

Where each indoor-cycling metric comes from

Heart rate

Heart rate can come from the watch’s optical sensor, a paired chest strap or another compatible monitor. A chest strap generally responds faster during intervals and is less affected by gripping handlebars, wrist position, sweat and vibration. It does not provide cadence, speed or power.

Cadence

True pedal revolutions normally come from a crank or pedal cadence sensor, a smart trainer or a compatible exercise bike. Do not assume that choosing an indoor profile means the watch is measuring pedal revolutions without a cadence source.

Power

Watts must be supplied by a smart trainer, pedal-, crank- or hub-based power meter, or a bike that broadcasts standard power data. Garmin’s cycling VO2 max estimate requires a compatible device, heart-rate recording, power data and a qualifying effort; Garmin specifies at least 20 continuous minutes at or above 70% of maximum heart rate for supported devices. Details are listed at Garmin Support.

Speed and distance

A wheel-speed sensor, smart trainer or compatible bike can transmit speed and distance. Garmin notes that its trainer recording can use actual wheel rotations, while Tacx or another app may show virtual speed based on power and simulated terrain. Wheel circumference, virtual wheel size and gearing can change the recorded result. The relevant Garmin guidance is at Garmin Support.

Basic setup for a Garmin watch

  1. Wake the watch and select Indoor Cycling, Bike Indoor or the model’s equivalent.
  2. Pair a heart-rate monitor, cadence sensor, power meter or trainer if you use one.
  3. Check that the desired data fields are visible.
  4. Press Start, ride, then press Stop.
  5. Save the activity and sync it with Garmin Connect.

Labels and menu paths vary by model and software version. Recording happens on the device; Garmin Connect is used for synchronization and analysis.

Basic setup for a Garmin Edge

On most Edge computers, open the sensor area—typically Settings → Sensors → Add Sensor → Search All—and pair the trainer or individual sensors. Select an indoor cycling profile before starting the recording. An Edge offers larger data screens and better management of several cycling sensors, but it still needs a sensor or trainer for power, cadence, speed and distance. A separate heart-rate source is needed if you want continuous heart rate.

Pairing and controlling a smart trainer

  1. Turn on the trainer and make sure it is not already being controlled by another app.
  2. Open Sensors and Accessories on a compatible watch, or the sensor-pairing area on an Edge.
  3. Add the trainer and choose Indoor Trainer when you need two-way control.
  4. Choose Power Sensor when Garmin should only receive data.
  5. Select the indoor activity profile and start recording.

Garmin documents ANT+ FE-C and Bluetooth Low Energy connections for supported trainers at Garmin Support. Compatibility depends on both device and trainer.

Two-way versus one-way connections

Connection Garmin receives Garmin can do
Indoor Trainer (two-way) Power, speed, cadence and supported fields Send resistance or target-power commands, including compatible ERG, grade and course modes
Power Sensor (one-way) Power and other transmitted performance data Record data, but not control resistance

A smart trainer generally permits only one two-way controller at once. A common arrangement is for a training app to control the trainer while Garmin listens as a one-way sensor. Garmin’s trainer-connection guidance explains this limitation.

Tacx-specific use

Tacx trainers can be controlled by the Tacx Training app, a compatible Garmin device, or recorded by Garmin while another app controls them. Supported Garmin models may offer free ride, course, workout, target-power, target-grade and target-resistance modes; availability is model-specific. See Garmin’s control documentation. Some Tacx NEO procedures require pairing power and speed/cadence channels in addition to the indoor-trainer connection: Tacx NEO pairing guidance.

Why Garmin and Zwift or Tacx may show different distance

The figures can both be internally correct. Garmin may record trainer wheel rotations, while the application displays virtual speed derived from power, grade, rider size and gearing. ERG mode, virtual shifting and simulated terrain can further change the relationship between watts and displayed speed. Indoor “distance” is therefore a convention based on rotations or a software model, not a measured route. If an Edge or watch supports it, review the sensor details and set the correct wheel circumference or virtual wheel size.

Choosing equipment for your indoor bike

Need Best starting point Important limitation
Time and heart rate Existing Garmin watch No dependable power, cadence, speed or distance without sensors
More consistent interval heart rate Chest strap Does not add cycling metrics
Cadence on a basic bike or trainer Compatible cadence sensor Does not measure power or control resistance
Speed and conventional distance Speed sensor or compatible trainer Indoor distance remains a rotation-based convention
Watts and structured training Power meter, compatible bike or smart trainer Compatibility and calibration matter
Automatic resistance, ERG and grade simulation Controllable smart trainer Requires supported trainer protocol and Garmin model
Large cycling display and multiple sensors Garmin Edge Buying an Edge alone does not create sensor data

Many consumer exercise bikes use proprietary Bluetooth. A display showing watts or cadence does not guarantee that Garmin can receive those fields. Check the exact bike, Garmin model and broadcast profile before buying a bridge or sensor.

Troubleshooting missing or implausible data

The bike shows watts but Garmin shows none

  • Check whether the bike broadcasts standard ANT+ or Bluetooth data rather than a proprietary signal.
  • Disconnect other apps, then search from Garmin’s sensor menu.
  • Try ANT+ if the bike supports it.
  • Use a separate power or cadence sensor if the bike cannot broadcast compatible data.

Garmin records time but no distance

This is normal when there is no speed source. Time and heart rate cannot create a physical indoor distance; add a supported speed sensor or trainer.
