OMEGA’s Paris 2024 timekeeping was a coordinated operation, not a single stopwatch deciding every result. The company said it timed all 329 Olympic events across 32 sports, using a large team and event-specific tools including electronic starting pistols, swimming touchpads, photocells and photofinish imaging. Each system serves a different role, and the official measurement method depends on the event.
What OMEGA supplied for Paris 2024
OMEGA reported that it timed 329 events across 32 sports at the Olympic Games. In a report dated 29 July 2024, the company said its Olympic deployment involved 550 timekeepers and 350 tonnes of equipment. These are OMEGA’s figures; the company material cited here does not provide an independent audit of the totals. OMEGA’s Paris 2024 announcement and in-Games report describe the event scope and operation.
The scale matters because timing is not just a matter of reading a clock. Starts must be triggered, finishes detected, and the appropriate measurement selected for each sport. OMEGA’s Quantum Timer is described by the company as accurate to one millionth of a second, but that figure refers to the timer’s stated precision—not a claim that one device independently determines every Olympic result.
How the timing systems work together
| System | Role described by OMEGA |
|---|---|
| Electronic starting pistol | Provides an electronic start signal for the competition. |
| Swimming touchpad | Lets a swimmer stop their own time by touching the pad at the finish. |
| Photocell | Detects a crossing quickly; in the wheelchair-race account, it produces an unofficial winning time. |
| Photofinish image | Supplies the official race time in the wheelchair-race account, measured from the middle of the front wheel. |
OMEGA’s system descriptions are specific to the contexts it identifies; they should not be read as a universal sequence used in every sport. The company’s Paris 2024 technology explanation describes the different equipment and applications.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How Olympic photo-finish timing works
A photofinish camera creates an image of the finish line over time, allowing officials to compare when competitors crossed rather than relying on a conventional snapshot that captures everyone at one instant. For wheelchair races, OMEGA distinguishes that official image-based measurement from the faster photocell reading: “Note that the official times of races are always taken from the photofinish image, which measures from the middle of the front wheel.”
That distinction is important. OMEGA says an additional lower, fifth infrared beam helps detect athletes’ body patterns, while photocell crossings record an immediate but unofficial winning time. The official race time comes from the photofinish image and its specified reference point—the middle of the chair’s front wheel—not simply from whichever sensor first registers a crossing.

How swimmers stop their own time
At the end of a swimming race, a swimmer touches a timing pad at the wall to stop their time. OMEGA describes these touchpads as allowing athletes to stop their own time, making the finish an athlete-activated measurement rather than a timekeeper pressing a stopwatch. The company also presented an exhibit at its Paris Pavilion about measuring swimming data; its announcement does not enumerate every variable measured.
What changed for Paris: the Scan’O’Vision ULTIMATE
OMEGA identified the Scan’O’Vision ULTIMATE photofinish camera as new equipment on display in Paris. The available company account establishes that it was presented as new, but does not specify its frame rate, resolution, or a measured improvement in performance at the Games. It would therefore be inaccurate to attach specifications for another camera model, or to claim a quantified change in how Paris finishes were measured.

How OMEGA adapted timing for deaf and Paralympic athletes
Visual start signals
OMEGA describes Starting Lights—two lamps that flash when the electronic starting pistol is triggered—as a visual start signal for deaf athletes in athletics and swimming. This is an adaptation for those settings, not a claim that the same start arrangement applies across all sports.
Factored timing in selected events
For certain competitions, OMEGA says it applies approved factors to times across Paralympic impairment classifications so athletes in different classifications can compete on an equalized basis. In athletics and cycling, the fastest factored time determines gold according to the company’s explanation. This applies to selected events; it is not a blanket adjustment for every Paralympic result.

OMEGA reported a separate Paralympic deployment of 240 timekeepers and 150 tonnes of equipment. Those figures describe the Paralympic operation, not the Olympic staffing or equipment totals, and are likewise company-reported.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why precision is more than a stopwatch specification
A timer’s resolution is only one part of a result. The system also needs an appropriate start signal, a finish detector suited to the event, and a defined measurement rule. A touchpad records a swimmer’s finish contact; a photocell can provide a rapid crossing indication; a photofinish image can resolve an official race finish using a specified reference point. The Quantum Timer’s one-millionth-of-a-second precision is OMEGA’s stated technical figure, while the complete timing process varies by sport.
