Yes. Create a Personal Automation in the Shortcuts app on your paired iPhone and add the Set Watch Face action. You can trigger it at a clock time, sunrise or sunset, when you arrive somewhere, or when you leave. Each change is a separate automation, so create another trigger for the face you want afterward.
Apple may rename buttons or rearrange Shortcuts between iOS releases; labels below include the current wording and common alternatives.
Prepare your faces and automations
- Pair and normally sync the iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Create each target face in the iPhone’s Watch app or on the watch, then leave it in the watch’s face collection.
- Use practical names such as Work, Workout, Home, Evening and Sleep. The picker can still show repeated official face names when you have several configurations with different complications.
- For location rules, enable Location Services and allow Shortcuts to use location when iOS requests it.
- Decide how the watch should switch back. A rule that selects Work at 9 a.m. does not remember and restore the face that was active before it ran.
If several copies of a face style appear, remove unused duplicates, select the exact configuration, and test it immediately.
Automatically change the face at a specific time
- Open Shortcuts on the iPhone.
- Open Automation, tap +, then choose Create Personal Automation (or the new-automation control shown by your iOS version).
- Select Time of Day, set the time, and choose the repeat schedule available to you, such as daily, weekly or monthly.
- Tap Next, choose Add Action, and search for Watch.
- Select Set Watch Face, tap the blue Face parameter, and choose the intended face configuration.
- Review the automation. If Ask Before Running is offered, turn it off, tap Don’t Ask, and tap Done.
The action and general flow are documented in this Shortcuts walkthrough. For a full routine, use separate rules—for example, 7:00 a.m. Work, 5:30 p.m. Workout and 9:30 p.m. Evening.

Use sunrise or sunset as the trigger
In the Time of Day trigger, some iOS versions offer Sunrise and Sunset in addition to a fixed clock time. Choose one, set any available offset or repeat options, and add Set Watch Face as above. Sunrise and sunset suit daylight-based routines better than a fixed work schedule, because their actual times change throughout the year. Availability and labels can vary by iOS release; the same options are described in the MacRumors guide.
Change the face when you arrive at a location
- In Shortcuts > Automation, tap + and choose Create Personal Automation (or the equivalent new-automation option).
- Select Arrive and choose the workplace, gym, home or another destination.
- Adjust the map pin and geofence radius if those controls are shown.
- Tap Next > Add Action, search for Watch, and select Set Watch Face.
- Tap the blue Face parameter, select the target configuration, review the rule and save it.
For example, an arrival rule can select an Activity face at the gym or a Work face at the office. Arrival and departure flows are also illustrated by AppleInsider.
Change it back when you leave
Create a second automation using the same path, but choose Leave instead of Arrive. Examples include Leave home → Work, Leave work → Personal, Leave gym → Standard, and Leave a school or hospital campus → General.

A location trigger selects the face specified in that rule; it does not know which face was previously active. Pair arrival and departure rules (or two time rules) whenever you need a complete cycle.
Time versus location automation
| Method | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Time of Day | Predictable workday, workout, evening or sleep schedules | Can be wrong on holidays, weekends or travel; each transition needs its own rule |
| Arrive/Leave | Workplaces, gyms, homes and other recurring destinations | Depends on permissions and geofencing; may run early, late, inconsistently or not at all |
| Focus | A broader context that also changes notifications and allowed apps | More than a face change; menu names vary by iOS and watchOS |
| Manual shortcut | Occasional changes or a dependable fallback | Requires a tap rather than an automatic trigger |
Combining time and location
The basic Personal Automation screen normally offers separate triggers, not a simple “at 9 a.m. only at this location” condition. An advanced shortcut can test time or location with conditional logic before running Set Watch Face, but it requires more permissions and is more sensitive to interface changes. Start with separate rules unless you genuinely need the extra condition.
Use Focus when the whole context should change
Focus can activate on a schedule or at a location and can be associated with an Apple Watch face. It is preferable when the face should change together with notifications, allowed apps or other work, home or fitness settings. In the selected Focus, look for the Apple Watch face customization and link the desired face. Use Shortcuts when you want only a direct face change; use Focus when the context itself is the automation.

Troubleshoot a rule that does not work
It asks for confirmation
Time triggers commonly offer Ask Before Running; disable it and confirm Don’t Ask. Location triggers can expose different controls or still request confirmation depending on iOS version and trigger type. If hands-free location switching is unavailable, use a location-based Focus or keep a manual shortcut available.
The location never fires
- Check Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and Shortcuts’ location permission.
- Verify the saved address and map pin; a radius that is too small can miss you, while a large radius can fire before arrival.
- Test while carrying the iPhone. The automation is configured there, and location recognition depends on Apple’s permission and geofencing system.
- Confirm the automation is enabled in Shortcuts > Automation.
The face action is missing
Create the automation on the iPhone, search for “Watch” or “face,” and confirm the iPhone and watch are paired. Update software if the devices are unusually old. Exact action availability depends on the iOS/watchOS combination, so there is no single current model cutoff established here.

The automation ran but the watch did not change
- Check the trigger’s time, repeat days, Arrive/Leave choice and location.
- Verify that the target face still exists on the watch.
- Run the underlying shortcut manually, if you created one.
- Test with a nearby time or an easy-to-enter location.
- Review Shortcuts notifications for a failed or confirmation-pending run.
- Recreate the automation if its action became stale after a major system update.
Several rules keep overriding one another
Document every trigger and temporarily disable overlapping automations while testing. A 5 p.m. time rule, a Leave Work rule and a Focus rule can all select different faces within minutes.

This is a fallback, not an automatic schedule. Create an ordinary shortcut containing Set Watch Face, open its details and enable Show on Apple Watch. Compatible shortcuts appear in the watch’s Shortcuts app, and a shortcut can be added as a complication to a face that supports complications. Apple notes that not every iPhone shortcut is compatible with Apple Watch: Apple Watch Shortcuts guide and Apple’s Shortcuts guide.
Tap the shortcut in the watch’s Shortcuts app or its complication to switch faces on demand. That action does not create a time or geofence trigger.

| Goal | Trigger | Action | Return rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workday | Time of Day, 8:30 a.m. | Set Work face | Separate 5 p.m. Personal rule |
| Gym | Arrive at gym | Set Workout face | Leave gym |

| Evening | Sunset or fixed time | Set Minimal face | Morning time rule |
| Focused work | Work Focus activates | Use the Focus-linked face or a Shortcuts action | Focus deactivates |
What not to rely on
Older articles may present the Siri Watch Face as the current universal solution. Apple’s developer documentation limits that watch face to watchOS 11 and earlier; newer releases use Smart Stack and widget approaches for comparable contextual information. See Apple’s Siri Watch Face documentation and watch and widget support notes.
The Bottom Line
Use iPhone Shortcuts’ Set Watch Face action for each time, arrival or departure event you need. Build a second rule for the return transition, and use Focus or a watch shortcut when location confirmation or geofencing makes a fully automatic rule unreliable.
