It works only with selected AirPods paired to a compatible iPhone, so buying new earbuds alone may not be enough.
What Apple launched—and what “simultaneous translation” means
Apple introduced Live Translation with AirPods as part of its iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence rollout in 2025. It is a software feature, not a translation-only AirPods model. Apple’s announcement describes the feature as part of Apple Intelligence.

In an in-person conversation, the listener hears a translation of the other person’s supported-language speech through their AirPods. The iPhone provides the Translate app interface, where a transcript can be shown and a translated reply can be played aloud. That makes “live” or “near-real-time translation” a better description than guaranteed simultaneous interpretation: the speech must be recognized and translated before it is played.
Apple also offers Live Translation in Phone and FaceTime, but those are separate call scenarios. Their availability and requirements should not be assumed to match every in-person language or region combination.

Which AirPods and iPhones are compatible?
Apple’s current support information lists these AirPods models for Live Translation. The iPhone requirement is just as important: Apple’s AirPods guide specifies an iPhone 15 Pro or later for the supported workflow, running iOS 26 or later with Apple Intelligence enabled.
| AirPods model | Live Translation |
|---|---|
| AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation | Supported |
| AirPods 4 without Active Noise Cancellation | Not listed as supported |
| AirPods Pro 2 | Supported |
| AirPods Pro 3 | Supported |
| Original AirPods Pro | Not listed as supported |
| Original AirPods Max | Not listed as supported |
| AirPods Max 2 | Supported |
Apple’s current support article lists AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro 2 or later, and AirPods Max 2. The AirPods user guide describes the compatible iPhone and two-person setup. Apple’s iOS 26 feature document also makes clear that support is not exclusive to AirPods Pro 3.
AirPods need the latest firmware and must be paired with the compatible iPhone. Apple Intelligence must be available and enabled on that iPhone. As a result, supported earbuds paired with an older or otherwise incompatible phone will not provide this feature.
Which languages does Apple list?
Apple’s current U.S. product information lists these language variants for Live Translation:

- Chinese — Mandarin, Simplified
- Chinese — Mandarin, Traditional
- English — U.K. and U.S.
- French — France
- German — Germany
- Italian — Italy
- Japanese — Japan
- Korean — South Korea
- Portuguese — Brazil
- Spanish — Spain
Apple notes that features may not be available in every language or region. This list is broader than the initial set in Apple’s 2025 iOS 26 materials, which is why older coverage may mention fewer languages. Check Apple’s current AirPods product information for the availability that applies to your location.
How to start an in-person translation
The Translate app is the clearest route; there is no separate AirPods translation app.
- Pair the supported AirPods with the compatible iPhone and make sure the earbuds have the latest firmware.
- Open Translate on the iPhone, then tap Live.
- Select the languages for the conversation and tap Start Translation.
- Listen through the AirPods as the other person speaks. Use the iPhone’s Live view to show the transcript or play your translated response through the phone speaker.
- Tap the X to stop.
Apple also lists starting Live Translation by asking Siri, setting the iPhone Action button to open Translate, or using an AirPods control. On supported models, press and hold both AirPods stems at the same time; on AirPods Max 2, press and hold the listening-mode button. Controls can vary by model. The feature can also be used during Phone or FaceTime calls while wearing AirPods.
Does the other person need AirPods?
No. One person can wear supported AirPods while the other speaks normally. The iPhone can show the translation or play the wearer’s translated reply aloud, which is useful when the other person has no compatible earbuds.

- Active Noise Cancellation reduces unwanted background noise
- Adaptive Transparency lets outside sounds in while reducing loud environmental noise
- Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
- Multiple ear tips (XS, S, M, L)
- Touch control lets you swipe to adjust volume, press to direct media playback, answer or end calls, and press and hold to switch between listening modes
For both people to hear translated responses through their own AirPods, each needs supported AirPods with current firmware and a compatible iPhone, and both need to start the Live Translation experience. Two-way earbud audio is not automatic merely because one person launches the feature.
Accuracy, delay and practical limits
Live Translation is designed to help with everyday conversation, not to guarantee a word-for-word interpretation. Apple warns that generative-model output may be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive. Accents, fast speech, background noise, overlapping speakers, idioms, sarcasm, names, and technical vocabulary can make recognition or translation less dependable. Expect a pause while speech is processed rather than zero-latency interpretation.
In a noisy setting, Apple says the iPhone microphones can supplement the AirPods microphones: move the iPhone closer to the speaker. Apple’s public descriptions cited here do not establish that every stage of translation works entirely offline, so do not rely on that assumption if connectivity matters.
For medical, legal, immigration, emergency, or other consequential conversations, confirm critical details in writing or use a qualified human interpreter. Live Translation can assist communication, but it is not a certified interpretation service.

Should you buy AirPods for translation?
Check the phone and the AirPods you already own before spending money. If you have AirPods Pro 2, Apple lists them as supported; a new Pro model is not required just to access Live Translation. If you have standard AirPods 4 without ANC, they are not on Apple’s supported list. And if your iPhone cannot run Apple Intelligence, new AirPods will not fix that limitation.
For occasional translation, try the iPhone Translate app workflow first. It can display the conversation or play a translated reply without requiring the other person to own earbuds. AirPods mainly add hands-free listening and personal audio.
U.S. Apple list prices
The following prices were listed by Apple’s U.S. pages on August 18, 2026; prices and availability can change. They are product prices, not a separate Live Translation fee.
| Model | U.S. list price shown | Translation relevance |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods 4 | $129 | Standard model is not listed as compatible |
| AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation | $179 | Lowest-priced new model in this list that Apple supports |
| AirPods Pro 2 | Not stated on Apple’s cited current support page | Existing owners may already have compatible earbuds |
| AirPods Pro 3 | $249 | Supported; consider for the broader Pro feature set, not translation alone |
| AirPods Max 2 | $549 | Supported over-ear option; a poor fit if translation is the only reason to buy |
Apple’s AirPods comparison page lists the U.S. model prices and compatibility information. AirPods 4 with ANC is the lower-cost new entry among these supported options; AirPods Pro 3 may make more sense if you also want an in-ear fit and its wider feature set. Choose AirPods Max 2 only if you want over-ear headphones for reasons beyond translation. The original AirPods Max is not listed as compatible.

Check the setup in this order:
- Confirm the exact AirPods model; not every AirPods 4 or AirPods Max generation is supported.
- Update the iPhone to iOS 26 or later and the AirPods to their latest firmware.
- Verify the phone is an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone and that Apple Intelligence is enabled.
- Make sure the AirPods are paired with that iPhone, rather than another device.
- Check that the selected language and region are supported and that any required language resources are available.
- Reconnect the AirPods or restart the devices if the feature still does not appear.
If translation starts but seems slow or unreliable, reduce background noise, have one person speak at a time, and keep sentences clear. For a critical exchange, verify the translated meaning by text or with a qualified interpreter.
