Start with Apple’s low-risk recovery sequence: place the watch on a correctly aligned magnetic charger, verify the entire charging setup, and leave it connected for up to 30 minutes. If it remains unresponsive, hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears. If the watch still vibrates, speaks, or connects to your iPhone while showing no image, check Screen Curtain before arranging service.
Identify what the black screen is telling you
| What you see or notice | Most likely direction | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Red lightning bolt | The battery may be too depleted to start | Charge it correctly and wait up to 30 minutes |
| Charging-cable icon or blank screen on the charger | Deep discharge or a charging connection problem | Check alignment, cable, adapter, outlet and cleanliness |
| Vibration, sound, Siri or iPhone communication, but no picture | Screen Curtain, wake settings, a frozen display subsystem or display hardware failure | Check Screen Curtain and operating modes |
| Apple logo that never progresses | Boot or software problem | Force-restart, then consider unpairing and pairing again |
| No response at all | Depleted battery, failed charging path, frozen software or hardware damage | Charge for up to 30 minutes, then force-restart |
Apple describes the red lightning bolt as insufficient power and says a blank screen or charging-cable icon can require up to 30 minutes of charging before startup. Apple’s charging and restart guidance covers these symptoms.
1. Charge the watch correctly for up to 30 minutes
A faulty adapter or poor magnetic contact can look exactly like a dead watch. Test the complete charging chain rather than only placing the watch on a dock.
- Put the back of the watch against the Apple Magnetic Charging Cable or USB-C Magnetic Fast Charging Cable intended for Apple Watch.
- Confirm the cable is fully connected to its USB power adapter and that the adapter is plugged into a working outlet.
- Reposition the watch until the magnets align. Look for a charging indicator or lightning-bolt symbol.
- Wipe the watch back and charger with a soft, nonabrasive cloth. Both should be clean and dry, and any protective film should be removed from the charger.
- If possible, try another compatible Apple Watch charging cable and another known-good USB power adapter.
- Leave the watch connected for up to 30 minutes before deciding that charging has failed.
For 44 mm, 45 mm and 49 mm models, some docks or the MagSafe Duo Charger can be harder to align. Adjust the charger angle or lay it flat; with Apple Watch Ultra or later, removing the band may help it sit correctly. Apple also documents a country-specific incompatibility message for certain WPT-compliant chargers purchased in China or Indonesia; use an appropriate Apple charging solution if that message appears. These points are included in Apple’s support instructions.

2. Force-restart a frozen or unresponsive watch
- Press and hold the side button and Digital Crown at the same time.
- Keep holding both buttons for at least 10 seconds.
- Release them when the Apple logo appears.
- Allow several minutes for startup; do not interrupt the watch immediately after the logo returns.
This is a force restart, not a normal restart. It does not promise to repair a failed screen, battery or charging circuit, and it is not an erasure procedure. Apple recommends the same two-button recovery for a blank/noncharging watch and one stuck on the Apple logo. See Apple’s blank-screen instructions and Apple’s Apple-logo guidance.
3. When the watch works but the display stays black
Listen for notifications, feel for haptics, ask Siri a simple question, or check whether the paired iPhone can communicate with the watch. Those signs indicate that the watch may be running even though no image is visible.
Turn off Screen Curtain
Screen Curtain intentionally turns off the display while VoiceOver and the watch continue operating. On the paired iPhone, open Apple Watch > My Watch > Accessibility > VoiceOver, then turn Screen Curtain off. Apple explains this behavior at its Screen Curtain support page. If the picture returns, the watch did not have a dead-screen hardware fault.
Check Theater Mode and wake settings
Theater Mode prevents the display from lighting when you raise your wrist. Open Control Center and turn it off if the watch responds to a tap or button press but not to wrist movement. Also check Settings > Display & Brightness > Wake on Wrist Raise. A locked watch, Low Power Mode or a Focus mode can change wake behavior, but these settings do not normally explain a permanently absent image.

Exit Water Lock
Water Lock blocks touch input; it is not normally a permanent black-screen fault. Press and hold the Digital Crown until the watch indicates that it is unlocked and plays tones to eject water. On watchOS 8 or earlier, rotate the Digital Crown instead. See Apple’s Water Lock instructions.
4. If the Apple logo never finishes loading
First perform the two-button force restart and wait several minutes. Keep the watch and paired iPhone close together. If the logo still persists and the iPhone can communicate with the watch, unpair and pair it again:
- Open the Apple Watch app and go to My Watch > All Watches.
- Tap the information button next to the affected watch and choose Unpair Apple Watch.
- For a GPS + Cellular model, choose whether to keep the cellular plan, then enter the Apple Account password if requested.
- Pair the watch again and restore from the backup when offered.
- Check My Watch > General > Software Update.
Unpairing creates a backup on the iPhone, but it is not the right first step for a watch that is completely dead and it cannot repair failed display or charging hardware. Apple’s procedure is at support.apple.com/en-mide/102007.
5. What to do after water exposure
Apple Watch is water-resistant, not waterproof. Wipe it with a nonabrasive, lint-free cloth. Do not use heat, compressed air, sprays, rice, or objects inserted into the microphone or speaker openings, and do not shake the watch to remove water. If Water Lock is active, use the Digital Crown procedure above. If the screen went black immediately after liquid exposure, stop repeated charging attempts and arrange inspection. Apple’s precautions are listed at support.apple.com/en-ie/109522.

When to stop troubleshooting and seek repair
- Charging for up to 30 minutes and a force restart produce no result.
- The watch is cracked, bent, swollen, separated from its case or unusually hot.
- The black screen began after a drop, impact or liquid exposure.
- The watch produces sounds or haptics but remains permanently blank after Screen Curtain is ruled out.
- The Apple logo repeatedly hangs or the watch continually restarts.
- The Digital Crown or side button is physically damaged.
- You cannot safely complete unpairing or account-protection steps.
A persistent image-free display after these checks generally needs inspection of the screen, internal connection, battery or charging circuitry. Do not pry open the watch or apply heat.
Repair, warranty and AppleCare options
Apple offers in-person and mail-in service where available. The final out-of-warranty charge depends on model, fault, location and inspection; Authorized Service Providers may set their own fees. Start at Apple’s Apple Watch repair page.
Apple’s one-year Limited Warranty generally covers manufacturing issues, not accidental damage or normal battery wear; consumer-law rights may add protection depending on country. AppleCare+ terms can cover accidental damage and battery service when capacity falls below 80%, subject to the plan. In the cited U.S. terms, the accidental-damage service fee is US$69 for Apple Watch models excluding Edition and Hermès and US$79 for Edition or Hermès. Those are service-event fees, not AppleCare+ plan prices; verify current eligibility and terms at AppleCare and the cited U.S. terms.
Independent providers may have access to genuine Apple parts and resources, but their work is not Apple-authorized and is not covered by Apple’s Limited Warranty or AppleCare unless required by law. They may offer their own warranty. See Apple’s repair-provider information.

Prepare your account before service
- If possible, unpair the watch from the iPhone.
- Never give anyone your Apple Account password or device passcode.
- If no iPhone is available and the watch is unresponsive, remove Apple Pay cards and disable Apple Cash through your Apple Account website where possible.
- Remove the band and bring the paired iPhone and relevant accessories.
Erasing an unresponsive watch without an iPhone does not create a backup and does not remove Activation Lock. Apple’s preparation guidance is at support.apple.com/en-la/102868.

Can Screen Curtain make an Apple Watch look dead?
Yes. Screen Curtain turns off the display while VoiceOver and other watch functions continue.
How do I turn off Water Lock if the screen will not respond?
Press and hold the Digital Crown until unlocking and water-ejection tones begin. On watchOS 8 or earlier, rotate the crown.
Does a black Apple Watch screen mean the battery is dead?
No. Possible causes include charging failure, a software freeze, Screen Curtain, display damage, battery failure or charging-circuit failure.
Will force-restarting erase my Apple Watch?
No. A force restart is a recovery action, not an erase. It cannot, however, repair failed hardware.
Should I unpair my Apple Watch if the screen is black?
Only when it is stuck on the Apple logo and the paired iPhone can communicate with it. Do not make unpairing the first step for a completely unresponsive watch.
How much does Apple Watch screen repair cost?
There is no universal price. Apple’s fee depends on model, damage, location, coverage and inspection; Authorized Service Providers may set different fees.
