From the watch face, turn the Digital Crown upward, swipe up from the bottom, or use the double-tap gesture where supported. Scroll to a widget and tap it to open the related app. To build your own stack, scroll to the bottom, tap Edit, then add, customize, pin, reorder, or delete widgets.
This guide covers the current watchOS 26 interface. Apple introduced watchOS 26 in 2025; individual features can vary by Apple Watch model, language, region, installed apps, and setup (Apple’s watchOS 26 documentation).
What Apple Watch widgets are—and where to find them
Apple calls the widget area the Smart Stack: a scrollable collection of glanceable widgets and Live Activities. The stack can surface information or actions based on factors such as time, location, and activity.
- Widget: A glanceable card, such as weather, battery, calendar, or a Home control.
- Smart Stack: The collection that contains widgets and Live Activities.
- Live Activity: An in-progress item—such as a workout, timer, or music session—that can appear at the top of the stack.
- Complication: Information displayed directly on a compatible watch face, not inside the Smart Stack.
Apple documents these Smart Stack behaviors in its Apple Watch User Guide.

How to open the Smart Stack
- Start on the watch face.
- Use one of these methods:
- Turn the Digital Crown upward (the least ambiguous option).
- Swipe up from the bottom of the display.
- Perform the double-tap gesture, where your watch supports it.
If a swipe changes watch faces instead, return to the face and use the Digital Crown. It avoids confusion with horizontal face navigation.
How to browse and use a widget
- Open the Smart Stack.
- Scroll until the desired card appears.
- Tap the widget.
Tapping normally opens the associated app, so a widget is often a quick entry point rather than a replacement for the full app. Scroll to the bottom of the Smart Stack for shortcuts to apps including Music, Workouts, and Messages.
How to add a widget
- Open the Smart Stack.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Edit.
- Tap Add Widget.
- Choose a widget from the available list.
- If it has options, tap its Expand control and select the configuration you want.
- Tap Done.
The list depends on apps installed on the watch and on which apps provide Apple Watch widgets. It is not necessarily the same as the widget list on your iPhone. For example, a supported Home widget may let you choose a frequently used accessory; that option is not universal.
How to remove a widget
- Open the Smart Stack and tap Edit at the bottom.
- Find the widget you no longer want.
- Tap its Delete control.
- Tap Done.
This removes the card from the Smart Stack. It is not an app-uninstall command; the associated app can remain installed on the watch.

How to pin and reorder widgets
Pin a widget
- Open the Smart Stack and tap Edit.
- Tap the Pin control beside each widget that should stay in a fixed position.
- Tap Done.
Pinning makes frequently needed cards predictable while leaving unpinned items available for contextual suggestions.
Reorder pinned widgets
- Enter Smart Stack editing.
- Touch and hold a pinned widget.
- Drag it to the desired position.
- Tap Done.
Apple’s current instructions specifically describe reordering pinned widgets; do not assume every unpinned card can be assigned a permanent position.
How to customize an individual widget
Some apps offer multiple widgets or configuration choices. During editing, add the widget or select its available expansion/customization control, choose the option you want, and tap Done. A Home widget that targets a particular accessory is one documented example; available controls depend on the app and your setup.
Live Activities and Smart Stack hints
Live Activities
Supported in-progress activities—including workouts, timers, and music—can appear at the top of the Smart Stack. From the watch face, tap the Live Activity at the top, or open the Smart Stack and scroll to it when multiple activities are present.

To change their behavior, open Settings → Smart Stack → Live Activities on the watch. Apple says the Smart Stack remains open by default while a Live Activity is running, even when your wrist is down; the available controls can change with watchOS releases.
Smart Stack hints
The watch can use on-device data and routine trends to suggest something it considers useful. A small icon appears at the bottom of the watch face with a gentle wrist tap. Tap the hint to open the Smart Stack, or swipe down on it to mute hints for 24 hours. Suggestions such as workouts may take time because the watch needs to learn your routine.
Widgets versus complications: which should you use?

Widgets offer more room and multiple cards but require opening or scrolling through the Smart Stack. Complications are faster to see but limited by the watch-face layout and app support. Apple’s support navigation treats these as separate personalization features (Apple Watch support).
Choosing a practical starter stack
Start with the information you actually check, rather than adding every available card.

- Calendar or Reminders: Good for glanceable planning, not complete task or calendar management.
- Battery: Handy for checking watch or connected-device status.
- Timer: Most useful while timing something actively.
- Workout-related information: Convenient for quick access around exercise.
- Home: Useful for frequently used accessories when your Home setup and controls are supported.
- Music: Convenient during playback; browsing a library may still require the full app.
Pin your highest-priority cards and leave a few positions unpinned if you want contextual suggestions to remain useful. Pinning nearly everything improves predictability but reduces the dynamic nature of the Smart Stack.

“I can’t find widgets.”
There is no separate watch-face widget menu. Return to the watch face, open the Smart Stack with the Digital Crown or an upward swipe, scroll to the bottom, and tap Edit.
“I only see a few widgets.”
Check whether the relevant app is installed on Apple Watch and whether it provides a watch widget. Availability can also depend on your model, language, region, and configuration. Update watchOS and the app where appropriate, but do not assume reinstalling will create a widget that the app does not support. Apple notes that features are not available in all areas or on all models (watchOS 26 feature availability).
“The widget keeps moving.”
Pin it in Smart Stack editing, then touch and hold the pinned card to drag it into the order you want.

“The Smart Stack opens or stays visible unexpectedly.”
Check Settings → Smart Stack → Live Activities. An active workout, timer, music session, or another supported activity may be responsible. Also check for a Smart Stack hint at the bottom of the watch face.
“I removed the widget and the app disappeared.”
The documented delete control removes the widget from the Smart Stack; it does not describe uninstalling the associated app. Look for the app separately in your watch’s app list.
“I want this information always visible.”
Use a complication instead, provided the app and watch face offer one. Widgets are accessed through the Smart Stack, while complications occupy fixed fields on the face.
Can you add Smart Stack widgets from the iPhone?
Apple’s current widget instructions describe managing Smart Stack cards directly on the watch. The Apple Watch app on iPhone is used for watch faces, preferences, notifications, app installation, and other settings, but Apple does not promise that every Smart Stack editing operation is available there.
