Battery drain on watchOS 7 has several possible causes: post-update processing, weak connections, demanding workouts, background activity, display wake-ups, or an aging battery. Start with reversible checks before erasing the watch. If the drain began immediately after an update, Apple advises allowing several days for background tasks to finish; persistent severe loss, heat, swelling, shutdowns, or a Battery Needs Service message point toward service rather than another setting change. See Apple’s guidance at Apple Support.
Identify the pattern before changing settings
Record the battery percentage, time, watch face, recent workout or travel, and whether the iPhone was nearby. Check the result over a normal day rather than judging from one short interval.
| Pattern | Likely direction | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Started immediately after updating | Background update tasks | Charge normally and allow several days before judging the result |
| Mainly occurs away from the iPhone | Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular coverage, or signal searching | Keep the devices together and minimize cellular use |
| Mostly during outdoor workouts | GPS, heart-rate sensing, screen activity, cellular, or audio | Compare with a day without a long GPS or streaming session |
| Overnight or while apparently idle | Background activity, complications, notifications, synchronization, or battery age | Simplify the face, reduce refresh and notifications, then check Battery Health |
| Charge pauses around 80% | Optimized Battery Charging | Check charging optimization before treating it as a charging failure |
1. If the drain followed an update, wait before resetting
Apple says battery life can temporarily worsen after an Apple Watch software update while update-related tasks continue in the background. Keep the watch charged and use it normally for several days. Do not repeatedly erase and restore it during this period. If loss remains severe after that observation period, continue through the steps below. A percentage that collapses while idle, overheating, or repeated shutdowns warrants faster investigation.
2. Restart the watch and paired iPhone
- Turn off the Apple Watch with its normal power control.
- Turn it on again.
- Restart the paired iPhone.
- Use the watch through a normal day and compare the percentage with your recorded baseline.
Use a force restart only if the watch is frozen or will not shut down normally; it is a recovery action, not a routine battery-saving technique.

3. Improve the watch–iPhone connection
Bluetooth connection to the paired iPhone is generally the most efficient arrangement. When the iPhone is unavailable, Wi‑Fi typically uses less power than cellular in comparable conditions. Weak coverage can make the watch search for or maintain a connection repeatedly.
- Keep the watch and iPhone within normal Bluetooth range.
- Make sure Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi are enabled on the iPhone.
- Minimize time in a weak cellular-signal area on cellular models.
- When the iPhone is away, use a known Wi‑Fi network where possible.
- In a place with no usable Wi‑Fi or cellular service, test Airplane Mode temporarily. It saves power by restricting communications, but also removes connectivity features.
4. Reduce background activity
Background App Refresh
On the watch, open Settings → General → Background App Refresh. Turn it off globally, or leave it enabled and disable individual apps that frequently fetch data, use location, or update complications. Apple notes that apps associated with complications on the current face may still refresh even when their individual setting is off; changing the face is therefore an important part of the test. Details are in Apple’s Background App Refresh guide.
Watch faces and complications
Temporarily use a simple face with fewer complications. Weather, Maps or location, stocks, travel, fitness, health, and frequently synchronizing third-party complications are useful candidates to remove for a day. If runtime improves, add complications back one at a time rather than assuming every complication is inherently excessive.
Notifications
On the paired iPhone, open Watch app → My Watch → Notifications. Disable alerts that do not need to reach your wrist, using per-app controls where possible. Each notification can wake the display, trigger haptics, and communicate with the iPhone, but removing alerts also means missing them on the watch.

5. Reduce display and sound demand
- Lower brightness.
- Shorten the wake duration where the model provides that control.
- Turn off wake-on-wrist-raise or wake-on-crown-up if accidental wake-ups are frequent.
- Use a simpler face.
- If your model supports Always On, turn it off for a comparison day; not every watchOS 7 Apple Watch has this feature.
These changes trade glanceability and convenience for runtime. Apple’s battery guidance lists display activity among the factors that affect battery life: Apple Watch battery information.
6. Test high-drain activities separately
Long outdoor walking, running, hiking, and cycling sessions can consume substantially more power because GPS, heart-rate sensing, and screen activity remain active. Cellular data, poor reception, navigation apps, and streaming music add further demand. Audio played through the built-in speaker can also use more power than Bluetooth headphones on supported configurations.
For a useful comparison, record one ordinary day without a long GPS workout, cellular streaming session, or prolonged screen use. Do not enable Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings as a watchOS 7 fix: Apple documents that control for watchOS 9.1 or later on specified newer models, not for watchOS 7.
7. Check Battery Health and maximum capacity
On the watch, open Settings → Battery → Battery Health → Maximum Capacity. Maximum Capacity describes the battery’s capacity relative to when it was new. A lower percentage makes shorter runtime more likely, but Apple does not publish one universal replacement percentage for every Apple Watch model.

- Battery Needs Service: arrange service.
- Unexpected shutdowns or sharp idle drops: treat these as possible battery or hardware problems.
- Unusual heat: stop treating the issue as a settings problem and seek advice.
- Swelling or a separating case or display: stop using the watch and arrange service promptly.
Rechargeable batteries have finite lifespans. Settings can reduce demand, but they cannot restore capacity lost through chemical aging.
8. Understand Optimized Battery Charging
Optimized Battery Charging was introduced with watchOS 7. It learns charging habits and may delay charging beyond roughly 80% so the watch spends less time full, helping long-term battery lifespan. It is not intended to increase same-day runtime and is not evidence that the watch is causing battery drain.
If the watch sometimes stops near 80%, check the charging-optimization explanation before disabling anything. Turning optimization off may provide a fuller immediate charge in some circumstances but can increase long-term wear. Apple’s later instructions and controls vary by model and software version; see Apple’s charging-optimization information rather than assuming every current charge-limit control existed in watchOS 7.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Update beyond watchOS 7 when compatible
watchOS 7 is an old release. If your watch model and paired iPhone support a newer compatible version, update through Apple’s normal software-update path after backing up through the iPhone. Newer software may include bug fixes, security updates, and power-management changes, although it is not guaranteed to improve an older watch’s runtime and may itself cause temporary background activity after installation. Compatibility depends on the watch and iPhone; consult Apple Watch Support.

Do not confuse later features with watchOS 7 controls. Low Power Mode is documented for watchOS 9 and later, and is not available as a native watchOS 7 solution. The same applies to the reduced GPS and heart-rate sampling control described above.
10. Unpair and pair again only after simpler fixes
Unpairing rebuilds the watch–iPhone relationship and can clear corrupted synchronization data or a persistent software state. It cannot restore a physically worn battery.
- Keep the iPhone and watch together.
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Go to My Watch → All Watches.
- Tap the information button next to the watch.
- Choose Unpair Apple Watch and follow the prompts.
- Restore from the backup, or choose Set Up as New Apple Watch for a stronger diagnostic test.
Unpairing takes time. Apple Pay cards and some settings may need to be added again. Restoring can bring back the software state that caused the problem; setting up as new requires more reconfiguration but helps distinguish a backup-related issue. Menu wording can differ between the watchOS 7-era app and Apple’s current interface, so read each prompt carefully.
When service is the right answer
Contact Apple Support or an Apple-authorized service provider when Battery Health reports a service condition, the watch overheats, shuts down unexpectedly, shows possible swelling, or still loses charge rapidly after a clean software setup and re-pair. Apple’s service route is at support.apple.com/watch. Repair availability and cost depend on model, country, and condition; do not assume a universal battery-service price.
Quick Recap
Printable troubleshooting checklist
- Record the starting percentage and the circumstances of the loss.
- After an update, allow several days for background work.
- Restart both the watch and iPhone.
- Keep them close and minimize weak-signal cellular use.
- Test Wi‑Fi or temporary Airplane Mode where appropriate.
- Reduce Background App Refresh, active complications, and unnecessary notifications.
- Lower display activity and test without demanding GPS, cellular, or streaming use.
- Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health → Maximum Capacity.
- Install the latest compatible watchOS if possible.
- Unpair and re-pair only after backing up and exhausting reversible steps.
- Seek service for heat, swelling, shutdowns, a service warning, or persistent severe drain.
Common advice that does not apply
- “Enable Low Power Mode.” That is a later-watchOS feature, not a watchOS 7 control.
- “Disable Background App Refresh and the problem is solved.” Active complications can continue refreshing.
- “Any post-update drain proves the update is bad.” Temporary background processing is a documented possibility.
- “80% charging means the battery is defective.” Optimized Battery Charging can explain that behavior.
- “Replace the battery below one fixed percentage.” Service warnings and real symptoms matter more than an arbitrary universal cutoff.
- “Erase the watch first.” Unpairing is disruptive and should be an escalation step.
