Android Wear 1.5 is a historical, model-specific update based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow—not a universal update for every smartwatch. If your watch’s manufacturer still offers the official OTA for your exact model and region, install it through the watch’s system-update screen. If no update is offered, do not flash a generic “Marshmallow” ZIP: the wrong package can fail verification or damage the watch.
What Android Wear 1.5 means
“Marshmallow” refers to the underlying Android version, while “Android Wear 1.5” is the wearable platform version. The release is commonly associated with Android 6.0.1 and the 6.0.1W2 build family, but manufacturer builds and features varied by watch. Google’s Wear OS release history covers the platform’s development; Android Wear 1.5 should not be confused with Wear OS 2, a later and substantially newer generation.
Android Wear 1.5 is not a current, universal OTA. Whether an update was released—and whether its server or manufacturer support route remains available—depends on the precise watch model, region and installed build. Google’s current update instructions apply to watches running Wear OS 2 or newer; they do not promise a new Android Wear 1.5 update for legacy watches.
Check your watch model and current build first
Before looking for an update, identify the exact model, including any model number or regional variant, and record its installed software. On the watch, try Settings → System → About → Versions. Older firmware may put the version details under Settings → About or use slightly different labels.

- Record the Android Wear or Wear OS version.
- Record the Android OS version and system/build number.
- Note the Android security patch level if it appears.
- Use the watch’s version screen rather than assuming the phone companion app’s version is the watch’s operating-system version.
Google documents the current version-check path in its update guidance, but menu names can differ on older devices.
Compatibility is model-specific
Do not assume that a Huawei Watch, LG Urbane, Moto 360, Sony SmartWatch 3, Casio Smart Outdoor Watch or another 2014–2016 watch can install the same package. Eligibility and rollout timing were determined by the manufacturer and device build; a name shared across variants may not be enough to identify a compatible OTA.

Casio also published an earlier Android Wear update notice; it is further evidence that update instructions were device-specific, not a universal installation method.

Prepare before trying an official OTA
Use the correct companion app for the watch and make sure the phone and watch are paired. Google’s watch setup guidance and setup troubleshooting emphasize power, Bluetooth and proximity. Before starting:

- Put the watch on its charger and leave it there through installation. Casio’s model-specific instructions likewise tell owners to keep the watch charging and paired until the operation finishes.
- Charge the phone, keep it near the watch, and use a stable Wi-Fi connection if the update process requires network access.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled and Airplane mode is off.
- Allow plenty of time. Do not interrupt a reboot or remove the watch from its charger while installation is underway.
- Save or sync anything on the watch that matters before troubleshooting or resetting it.
Install Android Wear 1.5 through the official OTA
- Pair the watch with its compatible companion app and keep the phone nearby.
- On the watch, open Settings, then look under System, About or System updates.
- Choose System updates or Check for updates, if that option appears. Labels vary by manufacturer and software version.
- If the watch offers an update for its exact model, accept the download and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Keep the watch on its charger and connected as instructed. Let it reboot and finish without interruption.
- When it is back on, open the version screen and confirm the Android Wear version and system/build number.
Google notes that update notifications and controls vary by device and software version. Its current update page is not evidence that a legacy Android Wear 1.5 OTA remains available.
If no update appears
A missing update does not by itself mean the watch is broken. It may already have the latest firmware available for that model, may never have been eligible for Android Wear 1.5, or may have missed a regional rollout that is no longer offered. Pairing trouble, an old companion app or an unavailable manufacturer update service can also prevent an OTA check from completing.

- Charge the watch and leave it connected for a reasonable period; then check the update screen again.
- Confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled, Airplane mode is off, and the phone and watch remain close.
- Restart the phone and watch, reconnect them, and check the watch’s About → Versions details.
- Check the manufacturer’s support information for the exact model and region. If no official update route is documented, do not treat an old forum link or file mirror as an authenticated package.
- Consider a factory reset only if pairing or setup is the specific problem and less destructive checks have failed.
Manual ADB sideloading is not a universal fix
Manual sideloading is not the normal consumer update path, and there is no single ADB sequence that can responsibly be promised for every Android Wear 1.5 watch. It requires an OTA package signed for the exact model and compatible with the current build, working ADB access, a supported data connection, and a recovery procedure appropriate to that watch. Recovery menus and USB/debugging support differ.
A model-specific guide may use commands like these, but they are illustrative only—not instructions to run on an unidentified watch:

adb sideload update.zipA sideload can fail if the package signature or expected build does not match. Fastboot flashing is a different process; unlocking or writing partitions can erase data and raise the risk of making the watch unusable. Historical discussions such as the Android Wear OTA thread and Huawei Watch Marshmallow OTA discussion show that sideloading was discussed, not that any package linked there remains authentic or safe now.

Consider manual installation only if you can verify the full model and current build, locate a reputable model-specific guide and exact package, and accept the possibility of data loss or a failed recovery. Do not flash if the watch model or build is uncertain, the ZIP is described only as “Marshmallow for Android Wear,” or the package is for a different regional variant.

Pairing stalls at “Getting watch details” or “Finishing”
Check that both devices are powered on, close together and out of Airplane mode. Google’s pairing troubleshooting steps include forgetting the watch in the companion app, removing it from the phone’s Bluetooth memory, resetting the watch and pairing again if setup remains stuck. A current Android phone or companion app may not support every legacy watch, so a successful firmware installation does not guarantee that setup will work with a modern phone.
A modern phone will not pair with the watch
There is no universal fix for compatibility among an old watch, present-day Android software, its companion app and Google Play services. Depending on the model, a compatible older phone, manufacturer-specific companion app or clean re-pairing may help. Version-matched legacy apps are unofficial and carry security and compatibility risks; avoid random APK mirrors.

Factory reset: last resort, not an update method
A reset may help recover a failed pairing flow, but it does not restore a discontinued update server or make an incompatible phone support an obsolete watch. It erases local watch data, installed apps, settings and the phone pairing, so use it only after saving what you can and deciding that the setup problem justifies the loss. Google explains the reset consequences in its factory-reset guidance.
What to expect from apps after Android Wear 1.5
Do not install Android Wear 1.5 expecting an on-watch Play Store. A Google support community product-expert response says Android Wear 1.5 did not include one; compatible apps were generally installed through the phone companion system and could be resynchronized to the watch (community response). Google Play’s current guidance says on-watch Play Store use requires Wear OS 2 or newer (Google Play requirements).
Choose the official OTA if the watch offers it for its exact model and you want the lowest-risk update path. If it does not, the practical choice is usually to keep the working firmware rather than gamble on an unverified package—especially when the main goal is newer apps or phone compatibility.
