How to Reset Google Pixel Buds (Current Models and 2017 Original)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For current Google Pixel Buds, forget the buds in Bluetooth settings, connect the charging case to USB-C power, place both earbuds in the open case, then hold the rear pairing button for 30 seconds. Release it when the status light stops bouncing and turns off. Orange-and-white blinking indicates the reset is running; a bouncing white light means the buds are ready to pair again.

What a Pixel Buds reset does

Disconnecting only ends the current Bluetooth connection. Forgetting or unpairing removes the saved relationship from a phone, tablet or computer. Pairing mode makes the buds discoverable. A factory reset goes further: it clears Pixel Buds settings, including the device name and feature preferences, and returns the buds and case to a fresh pairing state.

Google’s current reset instructions begin with forgetting the buds. That step is required; it is not a substitute for the factory reset.

Resetting can clear corrupted pairing information, but it cannot repair a dead battery, damaged charging contacts, water damage, a failed speaker or microphone, or a problem in the host device’s Bluetooth system.

  • Hear and be heard with Clear Calling; it helps block background noise, so wind, external chatter, or other distractions in your environment won’t interrupt your conversations[2]

Use Google’s official reset instructions if your model-specific behavior differs.

When resetting is appropriate

  • The buds will not pair after charging, Bluetooth toggling, firmware checks and a restart of the phone or computer.
  • They repeatedly connect to an old or unwanted device.
  • One or both buds behave incorrectly after being charged and reseated.
  • Persistent dropouts remain after checking distance, interference, firmware and battery level.
  • You are selling, returning or giving the buds to another person.
  • You are installing a replacement earbud or other replacement component.

If the buds are connected but silent, first check volume and output routing. If they do not appear at all, check case power, seating and pairing mode before resetting.

Before you reset: a quick checklist

  • Charge the case and both earbuds.
  • Confirm the left and right earbuds are in their matching slots and make contact with the charging pins.
  • Clean and dry the earbud and case contacts with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Turn Bluetooth off and back on.
  • Forget the buds on every nearby phone, tablet or computer that might reconnect automatically.
  • Install an available Pixel Buds firmware update.
  • For intermittent dropouts, move away from likely 2.4 GHz interference such as routers, microwaves, baby monitors and wireless speakers.

Google’s connectivity guidance covers these checks before escalation to a reset: troubleshoot Pixel Buds connectivity.

How to factory-reset current Google Pixel Buds

  1. Forget the buds. Open your host device’s Settings, then Bluetooth or Connected devices. Select the Pixel Buds and choose Forget, Remove or Unpair. Labels vary by Android version, iPhone, Windows, macOS and manufacturer.
  2. Power the case. Connect the charging case to a reliable USB-C power source. Keep both earbuds inside.
  3. Check seating and the lid. Put each bud into its correct slot, press it gently into place and leave the lid open. The reset may not start if either bud is not making contact.
  4. Hold the rear button. Press and hold the pairing button on the back of the case for 30 seconds. Do not close the lid or release early.
  5. Read the light. Release the button when the status light stops bouncing and turns off. Orange-and-white blinking indicates the reset is in progress. When the light resumes a bouncing white pattern, the reset is complete and the buds are ready to pair.

Light location and presentation vary by model. Google’s status-light reference explains the current indicators: Pixel Buds status lights.

  • Immerse yourself in clear, crisp audio; the 11 mm drivers and high-frequency chamber deliver powerful bass and smooth treble, and spatial audio with head tracking give you immersive surround sound[2]
  • Go live with Gemini, your Google AI assistant; brainstorm ideas, make grocery lists, and schedule events, just by using your voice – with advanced audio processing, you can have clear conversations, even in noisy environments[2,11]

Pair the buds again

  1. Leave both earbuds in the open case and place it near the phone or other host.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth.
  3. On a compatible Android device, wait for the Google Fast Pair prompt and follow the instructions.
  4. If no prompt appears, open Bluetooth settings, hold the case button for about three seconds until the white pairing light appears, then select Google Pixel Buds from the device list.

Fast Pair is primarily an Android setup path. On iPhone, Windows, macOS and other Bluetooth hosts, forget the old entry and pair manually after the white pairing light appears. See Google’s Pixel Buds setup instructions.

What the status lights tell you

Light behavior Meaning
Orange and white blinking Factory reset is in progress.
Bouncing white The buds are ready to pair; this pattern can also indicate ordinary pairing mode.
Rapid orange blinking On supported models, the reset or pairing attempt failed.
No light Check case power, cable, outlet and charging contacts before assuming the button or buds are defective.

If the reset will not start

The button appears to do nothing

  1. Remove and reinsert both buds, pressing each gently into its slot.
  2. Plug the case into a reliable charger and keep the lid open.
  3. Clean and dry the contacts.
  4. Hold the button for the full 30 seconds.

If charging has been unreliable, Google’s charging troubleshooting flow recommends charging the case and buds for at least 30 minutes before trying to pair again: fix Pixel Buds that won’t charge.

Only one earbud is detected

Resetting cannot compensate for a bud that is not electrically connected. Verify the left/right slot, look for a charging indication when inserting the bud, clean the contacts and charge both buds. Repeat the reset only after the case recognizes both.

The light flashes orange rapidly

Treat this as a failed reset or pairing attempt on supported models. Recheck power, seating, contacts and the open lid, then repeat the procedure.

The buds still will not pair

Forget stale entries again on the intended host and any nearby device, then enter pairing mode by holding the case button for about three seconds. Check Bluetooth distance, firmware and interference. Google’s pairing guide also covers replacement components: troubleshoot a pairing issue.

The buds pair but have no sound

Check the selected audio output, volume, media-app permissions, earbud fit and cleanliness. A reset will not fix a failed speaker or a source-device audio problem. Google’s audio guide is at fix Pixel Buds audio issues.

The case has no lights or will not charge

Try a known-good cable, adapter and outlet, then clean the contacts. If the case still has no power, the reset may be impossible until the charging fault is resolved; contact Google support rather than buying new buds immediately.

Original 2017 Pixel Buds: a separate reset

The original 2017 Pixel Buds do not use the same procedure as current models. Google documents this legacy case reset:

What a reset erases, including Find Hub

The reset removes the Pixel Buds device name, feature preferences and pairing state. Your phone or computer may still display an old saved Bluetooth entry until you forget it.

Google specifically says resetting Pixel Buds Pro 2 also resets the ability to locate them with Find Hub. Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a bought from a previous owner or reseller should be reset before setup so ownership can transfer for Find Hub network functionality. Afterward, complete Fast Pair setup again and follow any Find Hub prompts. Do not assume every Pixel Buds model has identical tracking behavior; see Google’s Find your Pixel Buds guidance.

When a reset will not solve the problem

  • Dead or severely degraded battery.
  • Case that cannot accept or hold a charge.
  • Damaged, corroded or persistently dirty contacts.
  • Water or physical damage.
  • Failed speaker, microphone, touch control or sensor.
  • Phone, computer, Bluetooth-stack, app, network or interference problems.
  • Ear-fit or earwax-related sound changes.

If charging, contact cleaning, pairing and reset checks all fail, use Google Pixel Buds support and warranty options before replacing the entire set: Google Pixel Buds Help.
