Google began bringing a standalone YouTube Music app to selected Wear OS 2 watches on September 27, 2021. It let subscribers download music to a watch and listen through Bluetooth headphones without carrying a phone. The rollout later expanded: Google now says the app works on most watches running the latest version of Wear OS 2 or newer, but not every Wear OS 2 model is guaranteed to be compatible.
What the YouTube Music app does on Wear OS 2
This is more than a way to control music playing on a phone. The watch app can store downloads locally for offline listening, stream over a direct Wi-Fi or LTE connection, and play audio through Bluetooth headphones paired to the watch. Google also supports Smart Downloads, which refreshes music based on listening history, and a YouTube Music Tile for quick access to recent playlists and browsing. Google lists watch playback at 128 kbps AAC. Google’s Wear OS YouTube Music help page describes the current features.
For phone-free use, the distinction is simple: downloads need an internet connection while they are being saved, but not during playback; streaming needs the watch itself to have Wi-Fi or cellular data. Bluetooth headphones should be paired directly to the watch, not only to the phone. Google’s Wear OS listening guide describes playback through Bluetooth accessories.
Which Wear OS 2 watches are supported?
Google’s September 27, 2021 announcement named these models in the initial rollout:

On October 12, 2021, Google said support had expanded to more watches running the latest Wear OS 2 software. Its current help page describes compatibility as “most watches running the latest version of Wear OS 2 or newer.” That is not a guarantee for every model or regional software build. The most useful check is to search for YouTube Music in the watch’s own Google Play Store: if it appears as installable, that exact watch is eligible. Google’s rollout announcement records the initial devices and expansion; the current app guide gives Google’s broader compatibility wording.
What you need for phone-free listening
- A compatible watch: It needs an available YouTube Music app in its on-watch Play Store.
- YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium: Premium is required for the full music experience, including downloads and offline listening. Free functionality can vary by country and device; do not assume full on-watch, on-demand playback is available without a subscription. Google notes that some podcast functions may be available without Premium, although podcasts can still include ads for members. See Google’s Premium features guide.
- Bluetooth headphones or earbuds: Pair them to the watch for standalone listening.
- Connectivity for setup and downloads: Use Wi-Fi or another supported connection to install the app and save content. Direct streaming requires Wi-Fi or LTE; LTE streaming also requires an active cellular plan. Google says cellular streaming is not supported on iOS.
- Available storage: The amount you can save depends on the watch’s free space.
How to install YouTube Music on a watch
- Open the Google Play Store on the watch.
- Search for YouTube Music.
- Select the app and tap Install.
- Open it and sign in to the Google account associated with your YouTube Music membership.
Google’s current installation steps are in its Wear OS app guide. If the listing is absent, update the watch to its latest available Wear OS 2 build, connect it to Wi-Fi, restart the watch, and search again. Check free storage, account and region settings, and that the watch has an on-device Play Store. Compatibility is specific to the exact model; sharing a brand or processor with a supported watch does not establish eligibility. Sideloading an APK is not a dependable workaround and may leave sign-in, downloads, or playback broken.

How to download music for a workout
- Open YouTube Music on the watch.
- Choose a song, album, playlist, or podcast and tap its download icon.
- Leave the watch connected to Wi-Fi or another supported connection until the download finishes. A charger and stable Wi-Fi can help when a large download stalls.
- Pair Bluetooth earbuds directly to the watch.
- Open the watch’s downloads in YouTube Music and start playback.
Downloads are limited by watch storage. Smart Downloads can reduce manual playlist management by refreshing music based on listening history when connected to Wi-Fi, but use storage and may consume battery during background updates. For a specific run or trip, manual downloads are more predictable. Google’s general offline-download guidance says downloaded content must reconnect periodically to maintain authorization; the stated 30-day reconnection guidance is for mobile downloads, so do not assume that exact interval applies identically to every watch implementation. If a download stalls, check Wi-Fi and free space, put the watch on its charger, reopen the app, and retry with a smaller playlist. If content downloads but will not play, check that the subscription is active, the watch is signed into the right account, the earbuds are connected to the watch, and the watch has recently connected to the internet for authorization.

On a Wi-Fi-only watch, downloading ahead is the practical way to listen away from both the phone and a network. Streaming during a workout can add power demands, particularly alongside GPS and exercise tracking; the impact varies by watch, so offline playback is the safer choice for a long session.

When Google and Samsung were moving Wear OS toward version 3 with the Galaxy Watch 4 in 2021, many existing watches remained on Wear OS 2. The YouTube Music app brought a first-party Google music option, including offline listening, to selected older hardware rather than reserving the experience for Wear OS 3 devices. Installing the app does not upgrade a watch to Wear OS 3 or remove limits imposed by its storage, battery, connectivity, or performance. Older watches may take longer to synchronize, and their battery behavior will vary. The app is most useful when the exact watch is eligible, there is room for downloads, and the owner wants to leave the phone behind.
