How to Restart a Dead Fitbit: Charge, Reboot, and Reset by Model

A black or unresponsive Fitbit may need a proper charge, not a factory reset. Identify the model, try the right restart, and protect unsynced activity.

A Fitbit that looks dead may simply be out of charge, poorly connected to its charger, frozen, or unable to pair with your phone. Start by checking the model and charging it correctly; do not factory-reset it as a first step. A restart is designed to preserve activity data, while a factory reset erases locally stored unsynced activity and settings.

First identify what “dead” means

The symptom points to the right fix. A black screen can mean a depleted battery or bad charger connection, but it can also mean a failed display. A Fitbit that turns on but will not sync has a different problem from one that shows no signs of power.

  • Completely black screen: Check the charger, contacts, cable and power source before trying software recovery.
  • Battery icon but no startup: Leave it charging, then try the model-specific restart.
  • Logo appears and disappears: This may be a boot loop or an update-related failure.
  • Screen works, but the app cannot find the Fitbit: Troubleshoot Bluetooth and pairing rather than treating it as a dead device.
  • Red “X”: Google’s guidance treats this as a sync/software error; remove and re-add the device.
  • Vibration or syncing with a blank screen: The display may have failed even if the Fitbit still has power.
  • No logo, vibration, light, or charging indication: After checking a known-good compatible charger, hardware or battery failure becomes more likely.

If you do not know your model, check the device name in the Google Health or Fitbit app, the packaging, or your purchase record. Google’s device identification guidance explains where to find serial-number information. Do not guess at a button sequence: procedures vary, and holes on some devices are sensors or microphones, not reset buttons. See Google’s model-specific restart instructions.

Protect unsynced data before resetting

If the Fitbit still responds, keep it near your phone, open the Google Health or Fitbit app, and let it sync. The app name and labels may differ during Google’s rollout, so follow the equivalent device-management option available to you.

  • Remove and re-pair: Clears the phone’s connection and account setup; it is not the same as erasing the Fitbit’s local data.

Do not factory-reset a device holding workouts, sleep records, or other activity that may not have uploaded. Google explains the distinction between restarting and erasing in its restart guidance and device recovery and syncing guidance.

Charge a Fitbit that will not turn on

  1. Use the charging cable made for your exact Fitbit model. A cable that appears to fit may still be incompatible or misaligned.
  2. Connect it to a standard wall outlet using a safety-certified USB wall charger. For a completely black screen, Google recommends a wall outlet rather than relying on a computer USB port.
  3. Check that the cable is firmly attached and its contacts line up with the Fitbit’s charging contacts.
  4. Leave it connected for 60 minutes before moving on if the screen is completely black. Google’s black-screen advice gives this as a troubleshooting interval; it does not guarantee the device will recover.
  5. If there is still no response, try another compatible wall adapter and, if available, another genuine or model-compatible cable.

Google says a full charge generally takes about one to two hours, with the actual time varying by model and condition. A deeply depleted battery may show nothing for several minutes after you connect it. See black-screen and charging troubleshooting and model-specific charging information.

Clean contacts and check charger pins

Sweat, lotion, oils, and residue can interfere with charging. Disconnect the Fitbit first. Gently clean the gold contacts on the device and charger pins with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. If residue remains, Google suggests gently using a pencil eraser on the gold contacts; remove all eraser debris before reconnecting. Do not scrape aggressively, bend pins, or use metal tools. If spring-loaded pins stick instead of moving freely and returning when pressed, the cable may be faulty.

Stop if the battery or device is damaged

Do not keep charging a Fitbit that is hot, swollen, leaking, cracked, or visibly damaged. Stop using it and contact the manufacturer or an appropriate electronics-recycling or repair service. Do not charge a visibly wet Fitbit; let it dry completely and inspect for signs of damage or corrosion. A reset cannot repair liquid or physical damage.

Restart your Fitbit using the model-specific procedure

Charge the Fitbit first if it is unresponsive, then use only the instructions for the model you identified. Restart procedures below are from Google’s model-specific guidance; expected signs of a successful restart include a logo, vibration, or smile icon, depending on the model.

Model Restart procedure
Charge 5, Charge 6, or Luxe Connect to the charging cable. Press the button on the flat end of the charger three times, pausing about one second between presses. Wait about 10 seconds or until the Fitbit logo appears. For supported models, an alternative is to disconnect the Fitbit, wait one second, reconnect, and repeat three times within about eight seconds; then wait about 10 seconds for the restart.
Charge 3 or Charge 4 If responsive, open Settings > About > Reboot Device. If unresponsive, connect the charger securely and hold the tracker’s button for eight seconds. Release when it vibrates and shows the smile icon.
Inspire 3 If responsive, swipe down from the clock, open Settings, swipe up, and tap Restart Device > Restart. If unresponsive, connect the charger and hold the tracker’s buttons for 10 seconds; release when the logo appears and it vibrates.
Inspire 2 If responsive, open Settings > Reboot Device. If unresponsive, connect the charger and hold its buttons for 10 seconds; release when it vibrates and shows the smile icon.
Older Inspire or Inspire HR Connect the tracker to its charger. Hold the button or buttons for five seconds; release when the smile icon appears and the tracker vibrates.
Versa Lite, Versa 2, Versa 3, or Versa 4 Press and hold the physical button for 10 seconds. Release when the Fitbit logo appears.
Original Versa Press and hold the left button and bottom-right button together for 10 seconds. Release when the logo appears.
Sense or Sense 2 Press and hold the physical button for 10 seconds. Release when the Fitbit logo appears.
Charge 2 Connect the tracker to its charger and align the charger’s button with the tracker’s button opening. Hold the tracker button for four seconds; release when the logo appears and it vibrates.
Charge or Charge HR Connect the tracker to its charger. Hold the button for 10–12 seconds; release when the Fitbit icon and version number appear, then unplug the tracker.
Flex or Flex 2 Remove the pebble from the band and insert it into the charging cable. Use a paperclip on the charger’s pinhole for about three to four seconds, then remove the tracker and put it back in the band. Do not insert a paperclip into an arbitrary hole on a newer Fitbit.
Fitbit One Attach the tracker to its charger, align the gold contacts, and hold the tracker button for 12 seconds. Remove it from the charger, then press the button until the screen turns on.
Fitbit Surge Hold Home and Select for about 15 seconds, until the screen flashes or dims. Release the buttons, wait 10 seconds after the display turns off, then press Home to turn it back on.

If the button or menu procedure does nothing, confirm the model and charger connection before repeating it. A battery that is too depleted to respond may need more charging time. Do not probe openings on the tracker; the pinhole method above is specifically for the Flex and Flex 2 charging cable.

If it turns on but will not sync

A Fitbit that powers on but cannot connect is not necessarily a hardware failure. Keep it within about 2–3 feet of the phone while troubleshooting, then work through this sequence:

  1. Turn the phone’s Bluetooth off, wait at least 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
  2. Restart the phone.
  3. Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on other nearby phones, wearables, or smart-home devices that could compete for the connection.
  4. In the Google Health or Fitbit app, remove the device from your account.
  5. In the phone’s Bluetooth settings, select the Fitbit and choose Forget, Unpair, or the equivalent.
  6. Reopen the app, choose Set Up a Device, and follow the pairing instructions.

On iPhone or iPad, Google’s documented equivalent to clearing the app cache is uninstalling and reinstalling the app—but first forget the Fitbit in the phone’s Bluetooth settings. For the full recovery path, see Google’s syncing and device recovery guidance.

Factory-reset only when software recovery calls for it

Consider a factory reset only for persistent boot loops, a failed update that leaves the device unusable, severe software corruption, preparing it for another owner, or when support directs you to do so. Try to sync first if the Fitbit can still connect. An unresponsive device may not offer an in-menu reset, and a reset will not fix a broken display, charging circuit, or battery.

Supported tracker paths

For Charge 5, Charge 6, Luxe, and similar supported trackers, the current in-menu path listed by Google is swipe down from the clock > Settings > Device Info > Clear User Data. Some models may require the charger to be connected before the option appears. Check the instructions for the exact device in Google’s recovery guidance.

Sense and Versa paths

For Sense and Versa series devices, the listed path is Settings > About > Factory Reset. Consult Google’s reset instructions for model-specific qualifications.

Older models and ownership transfer

For older Charge and other legacy models, use Google’s model-specific recovery instructions rather than improvising a complicated button sequence. Google says the older Charge/Charge HR factory-reset procedure should be followed only at Customer Support’s direction. After a reset, set up the Fitbit again as a new device. If transferring it to someone else, remove it from your account too; supported devices with Suica contactless-payment data require separate removal before transfer in the relevant markets.

When to stop troubleshooting

If the Fitbit has had an hour on a known-good compatible wall charger, the contacts and cable connection are sound, and the correct restart still produces no response, further button combinations are unlikely to help. Contact Fitbit/Google support, especially if the device repeatedly boot-loops, will not charge on multiple compatible cables, has physical damage, or appears to have a failed display. Check any applicable return or warranty coverage before paying for repair or replacing it.

Whether repair or replacement makes sense depends on the exact model, its age and condition, warranty status, and the cost of a compatible cable or service. Do not assume a sealed Fitbit is safe or economical to open, or that a replacement device can recover unsynced activity from the old one.

Reduce the chance of another charging failure

  • Clean charging contacts when residue builds up, and keep the compatible cable’s pins free-moving.
  • If storing a Fitbit, Google recommends charging it to 100%, turning it off, and not leaving it connected to the charger during storage. See Google’s storage guidance.
  • Keep the Google Health or Fitbit app and device software up to date, while recognizing that an update problem may require a restart or support-directed recovery.
  • Use a replacement cable only if it is compatible with your exact model; Google’s Fitbit accessories page is an official starting point.
