One UI 8 Watch has shipped on the Galaxy Watch8 generation, and the Now Bar is a confirmed feature—not just a 2025 firmware rumor. The status of Now Brief and a separate Shortcuts app is less clear: both were reported in early software findings, but Samsung’s current public Watch8 material does not document them as fully as it documents Now Bar. Older watches may receive the software, but feature availability is not guaranteed to match the Watch8.
What changed since the original report?
A May 8, 2025 report described Now Bar, Now Brief and a Shortcuts app as upcoming features after finding references in One UI 8 Watch software. The Galaxy Watch8 family has since launched with One UI 8 Watch. Samsung now describes Now Bar on its Galaxy Watch8 product page as a way to see real-time information, including music and weather. A TechRadar hands-on review also found it surfacing active timers and workouts.
| Feature | What is established | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Now Bar | Confirmed on the Galaxy Watch8 generation; Samsung describes real-time information, and a review observed active-task status. | What appears depends on active tasks, supported services and device software. |
| Now Brief | Reported in One UI 8 Watch firmware findings. | A full phone-style briefing on every watch is not established by Samsung’s current public Watch8 material. |
| Shortcuts app | Reported in firmware findings, including layouts for app shortcuts. | Do not assume the app is available on every model or build; it is distinct from button and gesture shortcut settings. |
One UI 8 Watch is Samsung’s Wear OS 6-based watch software generation. The Galaxy Watch8 and Watch8 Classic ship with it. Older-watch rollout and individual feature support are separate questions; Android Central’s Wear OS 6 coverage notes that some Samsung Health capabilities remain limited to newer hardware.
What does Now Bar do?
Now Bar is an at-a-glance surface for ongoing or contextually useful activity, rather than simply another name for the notification shade. Instead of opening an app or navigating away from the watch face, you can check an active task or relevant information. Samsung’s Watch8 page illustrates activity, Energy Score, mindfulness and breathing-exercise information, and mentions music and weather. The TechRadar review observed timer and workout information, including remaining time, with more detail available after tapping.
#1 Best Overall

- NEW DESIGN. LIGHTWEIGHT FEEL: Maximize your days with a minimalist design. The sleek, thinner-than-ever silhouette makes Galaxy Watch8 look as good as it functions. With a snug fit and sporty style, it gives you readings without getting in your way.
- A PERSONAL ASSISTANT, RIGHT ON YOUR WRIST: Your Watch just became your personal assistant.⁴ Stay one step ahead of your day with a watch that helps you navigate your tasks and to-do lists.
- Active tasks: A timer or workout can appear while it is running.
- Media and everyday information: Samsung cites music and weather; reported and reviewed examples also include navigation or other context-dependent services.
- Contextual information: Some items may appear only when a supported task or service is active.
This makes Now Bar most useful when you want to glance at progress without returning to the app that started the task. It is not a replacement for the full app, and a quiet Now Bar does not necessarily indicate a problem if nothing supported is running.
Opening it and using gestures
The May 2025 firmware report said Double Pinch could open Now Bar. Treat that as a reported interaction, not a universal control for every model and software build. Samsung’s Watch8 user guide discusses gesture and button shortcuts separately; the guide excerpt does not by itself confirm that Double Pinch opens Now Bar in every configuration. See the Galaxy Watch8 guide and check the gesture settings on your own watch.
What is Now Brief, and is it on the watch?
Now Brief is a broader summary concept associated with Samsung phones and tablets. It is not the same thing as Now Bar: Now Bar surfaces immediate status or relevant activity, while a brief is intended to collect contextual information into a summary.

The May 2025 report said firmware strings pointed to Now Brief coming to Galaxy Watches. That establishes an early software finding, not a promise that every One UI 8 Watch model has a complete, phone-equivalent briefing feature. Samsung’s current Watch8 page emphasizes Now Bar and does not provide comparable detailed public documentation for a standalone watch Now Brief experience.

Its availability or content may depend on the watch build, region, paired phone, Samsung account and supported apps. The available public information does not establish a universal model-by-model availability list.
What was the Shortcuts app?
The same early firmware report identified a separate Shortcuts app intended to put frequently used app shortcuts within quick reach. It reported a 2×1 layout for two shortcuts and a 2×2 layout for four, and identified the app version as 1.0.00.18 at the time. These details describe what was found in early software, not a guarantee that the final app and layouts appear on every production watch.

Do not confuse that reported app with assigning an action to the Home button, a gesture such as Double Pinch, Samsung Modes and Routines on a phone, or a third-party automation app. Those are different mechanisms. If the reported app is absent, check the watch’s installed apps and current software rather than assuming the hardware-button shortcut menu is the same feature.
Which Galaxy Watches get One UI 8 Watch and these features?
The Galaxy Watch8 and Watch8 Classic are the clearest choices for One UI 8 Watch because they ship with it. The available sources do not establish a definitive, complete model-by-model update list or a feature-by-feature compatibility matrix for older watches. Samsung’s product comparison page listing earlier watches is not an update-eligibility notice.

| Watch | One UI 8 Watch status in the available information | Feature guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch8 | Ships with One UI 8 Watch. | Now Bar is confirmed. Check the production build for any separately exposed Now Brief or Shortcuts app. |
| Galaxy Watch8 Classic | Ships with One UI 8 Watch. | Use the exact watch build to confirm feature behavior; do not infer every detail from the standard Watch8. |
| Galaxy Watch7 | Older-model availability must be checked for the region and build. | Do not assume identical Now Bar, Now Brief or Shortcuts behavior. |
| Galaxy Watch Ultra | Availability depends on the exact model, year and build. | Confirm on-device; hardware-dependent health features may differ. |
| Galaxy Watch6, Watch5 and Watch4 families | A final eligibility list is not established here; check Samsung’s regional update notice or the watch itself. | Do not promise the three features or newer hardware-dependent health capabilities. |
Even when an older watch receives One UI 8 Watch, that does not mean it gains every Watch8 capability. Samsung Health features can rely on newer sensors or other hardware, so an absent health feature may reflect device limits rather than a failed update.

Phone, apps and service requirements
Some watch information is supplied or synchronized through phone apps and online services. Google Maps, Google Sports, media controls and account-based features may require the relevant app, permissions, connectivity or sign-in. A non-Samsung Android phone may not provide the same Galaxy ecosystem functions. LTE can provide a watch with cellular connectivity, but it does not remove all app, account or service requirements. The available sources do not provide a complete compatibility matrix, so verify the specific feature and paired-phone setup you plan to use.
What else comes with One UI 8 Watch?
Now Bar is only one part of the Watch8 software and hardware package. Samsung promotes Gemini integration, multi-information Tiles, updated app organization and watch-face customization, alongside Samsung Health features such as Antioxidant Index, Bedtime Guidance, Running Coach and Vascular Load. These are not all guaranteed on every older watch that might receive the software; some depend on newer hardware or supported services. See Samsung’s Watch8 feature details and coverage of Wear OS 6 and older-device limitations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check if a feature is missing
- Install available updates: Update the watch and paired phone, then update Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Health and the relevant Google apps.
- Restart both devices: Restart the watch and phone after updating, then check the feature again.
- Check setup: Confirm account sign-in, app permissions, connectivity and any service-specific requirements.
- For a quiet Now Bar: Start a supported task, such as a timer or workout, and see whether it appears.
- For Double Pinch: Review gesture and accessibility settings; the mapping may differ by model or software build.
- For missing Now Brief or Shortcuts: Confirm the exact model and software build. Early firmware findings do not establish that either feature is exposed on every final device.
- For missing health functions on an older watch: Check hardware eligibility before treating the absence as a software fault.
- For Maps or Sports information: Check the relevant Google app, permissions, account and connection.
Should you upgrade for One UI 8 Watch?
If you already own a Galaxy Watch8 or Watch8 Classic
Use the features available on your installed build before considering another purchase. Now Bar is a convenience layer that reduces the need to reopen an active task; it is not, by itself, a compelling reason to replace a working Watch8.
Best Value
- Vibrant 1.6” AMOLED Display – Large, high-res screen with smooth touch for easy navigation
- 5ATM & IP68 Water Resistance – Swim-ready and dust-resistant for active lifestyles
- Up to 14 Days Battery Life – Powerful 208mAh battery for long-lasting performance
- 101+ Workout Modes with Auto Detection – Automatically tracks common workouts for seamless fitness tracking. Advanced Health Tracking – Includes sleep coaching, SpO2, heart rate, and snore detection
- International Model No Warranty in the US. ONLY compatible with Android devices. Samsung Pay - Not Supported. NOT compatible with iPhone or iOS devices.
If you own a Watch7 or Watch Ultra
Check the exact update and feature behavior for your model and region first. Do not replace a recent watch solely on the assumption that the new interface features are unavailable; battery condition, hardware capabilities and the health functions you need are more consequential comparisons.
If you own a Watch6 or older
Verify update eligibility and hardware limits, then weigh battery health and performance against the features you would gain. Now Bar alone is a weak reason to buy a new watch if your current one remains reliable.
If you are buying a Galaxy Watch
The Watch8 is the most certain route to the One UI 8 Watch experience because it ships with the software. Consider Watch8 Classic if its styling and rotating-bezel design matter to you, or Ultra if you need its more rugged positioning; neither is necessary simply to obtain a different version of Now Bar.
Galaxy Watch8 price and configuration checks
Samsung’s US product and purchase pages surfaced a $349.99 list-price signal for the 40mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Watch8, $379.99 for a 44mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi configuration and $429.99 for a 44mm LTE configuration. These are configuration-specific US price signals, not a guarantee of today’s checkout price; offers, trade-ins and availability can change. Samsung’s purchase pages are 44mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and 44mm LTE. Independent launch coverage listed a different 44mm price, underscoring that launch pricing and configuration can vary; see TechRadar’s review.

Before choosing LTE, compare the extra cost with your need for cellular use away from a phone, and check carrier activation requirements. Compare the exact case size, connectivity and any trade-in terms shown at checkout rather than relying on a headline starting price.
