The red Move ring shows active calories burned through movement and exercise above resting needs. For a broader daily estimate, review Active Energy and Resting Energy in Apple Health and add them once. Workout summaries describe individual sessions, so do not add a workout total to daily Active Energy when that session is already included.
What calorie numbers Apple Watch shows
Active calories
Active calories are the energy Apple estimates you burn through movement and exercise beyond resting needs. This is the number represented by the red Move ring. Find it in Activity on the watch, the Activity summary in iPhone Fitness, or Health by searching for Active Energy. Apple explains the Move ring here: Apple Watch User Guide.
Resting energy
Resting energy is the estimated energy your body uses at rest. On iPhone, open Health > Browse > Activity > Resting Energy. If the category is not visible, use Health’s search field; labels can vary by iOS version, language, and region.
Workout calories
A workout report may show both active calories and total calories for that session. Total calories can include the resting energy expected during the workout period, so it is not automatically an extra amount to add to your daily total.

Approximate daily total
For a rough whole-day estimate, use:
Active Energy + Resting Energy = approximate total energy expenditure
For example, 500 active calories plus 1,700 resting calories is approximately 2,200 calories. Check each label before combining figures.
How to see calories burned today
- Wear the watch with its back touching your skin.
- Open Activity on Apple Watch and read the red Move ring.
- On iPhone, open Fitness for the daily activity summary and history.
- For the detailed breakdown, open Health > Browse > Activity, then review Active Energy and Resting Energy.
The watch can estimate movement calories without a manually started workout. Starting a workout still gives it a focused session and activity-specific processing. Fitness can show longer-term trends after at least six months of activity data, according to Apple’s guide.
How to track calories during a workout
Start and choose the activity
- Open Workout on Apple Watch.
- Choose the closest activity, such as Outdoor Walk, Outdoor Run, Indoor Walk, Indoor Run, Indoor Cycle, Functional Strength Training, Traditional Strength Training, HIIT, Yoga, Swimming, Hiking, Elliptical, or Rowing.
- Optionally select a time, distance, or calorie goal.
- Tap Start.
The watch can show active calories, heart rate, distance, pace, and elapsed time. Use the Digital Crown to change workout views. Activity-specific algorithms mean an appropriate workout type is preferable to a generic one. See Apple’s workout guidance at Apple Watch workout metrics.
End and review the session
- Swipe right on the workout screen.
- Tap End.
- Turn the Digital Crown to review the summary.
- Tap the end control at the top to save it.
On iPhone, open Fitness > Sessions and select the workout. The summary may include active and total calories, splits, heart rate, effort, duration, and route. Apple’s save-and-review instructions are at this guide.

If you forgot to start
Apple Watch can detect some activities, remind you to record them, and award credit for exercise already completed. Starting the workout before exercising remains the more dependable method for deliberate session tracking.
How to find calories after a workout
- On the watch: open Activity, scroll to recent workouts, and tap one.
- On iPhone: open Fitness, scroll to Sessions, and select the workout.
- For energy records: open Health > Browse > Activity, then choose Active Energy or Resting Energy and switch between day, week, month, and year views.
A workout session is a report for one period; whole-day Active Energy is a separate aggregate. The same workout may contribute to both views.
Update the personal information used for estimates
- Open the Watch app on iPhone.
- Tap My Watch > Health > Health Details.
- Tap Edit.
- Update height, weight, sex, age, and wheelchair status as applicable.
These details, along with sensor data, influence calorie and activity calculations. Keep the profile current after significant weight changes; updating it primarily affects future calculations, not every historical estimate. See Apple’s explanation at Health details and activity calculations.
Improve the estimate’s consistency
Fit and sensor contact
- Wear the watch snugly but comfortably, with the sensor against bare skin.
- Do not wear it over a sleeve.
- Keep the watch and skin reasonably clean and dry.
- Use a consistent position during workouts.
A stable fit improves heart-rate readings, which help inform calorie estimates. Apple describes fit and sensor limitations at Apple Watch heart-rate and calorie guidance.
Check permissions and location calibration
- On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services and enable Motion Calibration & Distance.
- On Apple Watch, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Health > Heart Rate and enable heart-rate access.
Apple documents the heart-rate permission path at Heart-rate settings.

Calibrate outdoors
- Go outdoors to a flat, open area with good GPS reception.
- Open Workout and choose Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run.
- Walk or run at your normal pace for about 20 minutes.
- Repeat at substantially different speeds if those speeds are part of your routine.
Apple says calibration can improve distance, pace, calorie, Move, and Exercise calculations, especially when GPS is limited. If results remain abnormal, reset the data at Watch app > My Watch > Privacy > Reset Fitness Calibration Data, then provide new outdoor activity. Calibration improves the model but does not guarantee exact calories. Instructions: Apple calibration support.
Use compatible gym equipment
Compatible treadmills, ellipticals, and indoor bikes can share equipment data with Apple Watch. Benefits depend on the machine, connection, and data quality.
Active calories versus total calories
| Number | Meaning | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Active calories | Movement-related energy above resting needs | Move goals and activity trends |
| Resting energy | Estimated energy used at rest | Daily expenditure context |
| Workout active calories | Activity calories attributed to one session | Comparing workouts |
| Workout total calories | Workout activity plus estimated resting calories for that period, where shown | Reviewing the complete session |
Do not calculate daily Active Energy + workout total calories when the workout is already part of that day’s activity record. Add Active Energy and Resting Energy once for a rough daily figure, and treat workout summaries as session reports.
How Apple Watch estimates calories
Apple combines personal information and sensor signals rather than publishing a simple formula. Inputs can include height, weight, sex, age, wheelchair status, heart rate, accelerometer and other motion data, GPS and distance for supported outdoor workouts, workout type, stride calibration, and sensor availability. Apple’s validation summary describes heart-rate and calorimetry methods, sensors, and machine-learning models developed from studies involving thousands of participants and hundreds of thousands of study hours: Apple’s validation summary.
Validation under defined study conditions does not make every individual’s number exact. A 2023 study found Apple Watch Series 6 had similar energy-expenditure accuracy to a Polar A370 in young adult men during treadmill and ground running, but that result does not establish performance for every model, person, or activity: PubMed study. A 2026 preprint reported that error varied by brand and increased with higher body fat in its sample; it is preliminary and does not justify a universal Apple Watch error percentage: arXiv preprint.

When confidence should be lower
- Loose fit, poor skin contact, tattoos, sweat, water, cold skin, or unusual wrist movement.
- Strength training, stop-start exercise, swimming, or activities that do not match the selected workout type.
- Indoor workouts without adequate calibration.
- Incorrect height, weight, age, sex, or wheelchair status.
- Missing heart-rate data or a watch worn only for isolated workouts.
- Comparisons with treadmill displays, another wearable, or a calorie equation, each of which uses different assumptions.
During swimming, water can interfere with optical heart-rate readings, although other sensors may still support estimates of calories, laps, and distance. See Apple’s developer guidance at Workout interface guidance. Apple also states that the watch is not a medical device.
Should you eat back Apple Watch calories?
Do not automatically consume every exercise calorie shown. For weight management:
- Set a reasonable intake target as part of a broader plan.
- Log food consistently if weight loss is the goal.
- Weigh under similar conditions and examine a multi-week trend.
- Use Active Energy as an activity signal, not a guaranteed allowance.
- Adjust intake gradually when the trend is not moving as intended.
Wearable estimates, food labels, and portion records all contain error, while body weight changes with water, glycogen, sodium, digestion, and hormones. For pregnancy, diabetes, medical conditions, eating-disorder history, or supervised weight management, follow a qualified clinician’s plan instead of using the watch as the sole basis for intake.

Calories look too low
- Verify height and weight.
- Confirm heart-rate access and a snug fit.
- Check whether the workout was started and correctly categorized.
- Confirm the watch was worn during the period being assessed.
- Complete the 20-minute outdoor calibration for walking or running.
- Make sure you are viewing Active Energy rather than a different total.
Calories look too high
- Check for loose or sleeve-covered wear and implausible heart-rate spikes.
- Confirm the workout type matches the activity.
- Distinguish workout total calories from active calories.
- Check that the same session was not counted in both a workout report and a manually added total.
Heart rate is missing
Clean and dry the sensor and skin, tighten the fit, and verify Settings > Privacy & Security > Health > Heart Rate. Water and some motion patterns can prevent reliable optical readings; Apple notes that reliable readings are not possible in every situation.
A workout did not save
Check Fitness > Sessions and Health first. The workout may have been paused rather than ended, the battery may have died, syncing may be incomplete, or the final save control may not have been tapped. If necessary, restart the watch and iPhone and install available software updates.

Activity and Health totals differ
These apps present related records with different labels, time ranges, source priorities, and record types. Compare the exact date and time, Active Energy versus Resting Energy, workout active versus workout total calories, the source listed in Health, and whether a third-party app duplicated a sample.
Combining Apple Watch activity with food tracking
Apple’s Activity, Fitness, and Health apps are sufficient for movement and energy trends. Add a food-tracking app when you need meal, recipe, macro, micronutrient, or structured calorie logging. MyFitnessPal emphasizes food databases and meal logging; Cronometer focuses on detailed nutrition; and MacroFactor uses logged intake and weight trends for adaptive planning. Integration details and features can change, and importing exercise calories should not automatically increase your food target.
Apple Fitness+ is optional guided workout content; it is not required to view calorie data and does not convert estimates into measurements. If you do not own a watch, Apple’s official buying information is at Apple Watch; normal setup and ecosystem use require a compatible iPhone.
