Yes—Universal Genève is returning as a Breitling-backed luxury-watch brand, with a four-family collection planned across standard, limited, jewelry and signature tiers. The first 2026 watches revive the Polerouter, Compax and Cabriolet, while adding the jewelry-led Disco Mini.
The comeback is aimed at the high-luxury segment: reported prices begin at CHF 9,800 for the Cabriolet and reach CHF 51,000 for some versions. Availability, production quantities and final regional pricing remain subject to change.
Who owns Universal Genève now?
Breitling announced its acquisition of Universal Genève on 12 December 2023. A Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry report dated 11 January 2024 described the plan as a restoration of the historic name while preserving its individuality rather than absorbing it into the Breitling label.
Universal Genève’s 24 April 2026 company announcement places the brand in a House of Brands comprising Breitling, Universal Genève and Gallet, and names Grégory Bruttin as Universal Genève managing director. That corporate structure is current but can change as the relaunch develops.

The brand had been owned by Hong Kong-based Stelux since 1989. Its later transition to private-equity ownership and Breitling’s acquisition explain why the revival is being presented as a new operating chapter rather than a simple reissue program.
Why the name still matters to collectors
Universal Genève’s historical importance is broader than nostalgia. Its official history records a long sequence of chronograph and movement milestones:
| Year | Historical development |
|---|---|
| 1894 | Numa-Émile Descombes and Ulysse-Georges Perret founded the company in Le Locle on 18 January. |
| 1919 | Headquarters moved to Geneva. |
| 1936 | The Compax wrist chronograph was introduced. |
| 1944 | The three-register Tri-Compax arrived with a full calendar. |
| 1954 | Gerald Genta, then 23, designed the Polerouter for SAS’s Copenhagen–Los Angeles polar route. |
| 1966 | Universal Genève presented Calibre 66 as the world’s thinnest automatic movement; the resulting Shadow watches measured 2.5 mm in height. |
| 1989 | Stelux acquired the company. |
That combination—chronograph credibility, ultra-thin engineering and a recognizable Genta design—gives the revival more substance than a dormant logo being placed on unrelated watches.
How the 2026 collection is organized
The 8 April 2026 launch report from T3 divides the new range into four levels:
Recommended Free Tools
Rank #2
- Band Lug Size: 17mm
- Band Buckle Size: 14mm
| Tier | Role in the collection |
|---|---|
| Prêt-à-Porter | The regular production range. |
| Capsule | More artisanal, time-limited combinations. |
| Couture Creations | Jewelry-focused and bespoke artisanal work. |
| Signature | Time-limited reinterpretations of iconic Universal Genève watches. |
The launch report says the watches use in-house movements and steel or gold cases. The tier system matters when comparing prices: a capsule, couture or signature piece should not be treated as representative of the entry model in the same family.
Universal Genève 2026 models, specifications and reported prices
The following figures come from T3’s 8 April 2026 launch coverage. They are reported launch specifications and prices, not a guarantee of stock or a permanent worldwide price list.
| Family | Movement and operation | Case and wearing details | Reported pricing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polerouter | UG-110, automatic | 39 mm wide, 9.5 mm thick, 100 m water resistance; steel or gold cases are reported | CHF 14,000–32,000 for the standard collection |
| Compax | UG-200, automatic tri-compax chronograph; 72-hour power reserve; 4 Hz | 39.5 mm wide, 12.45 mm thick | CHF 15,500–39,900 |
| Cabriolet | Manual winding; 72-hour power reserve; 3 Hz | Reversible case; 24.2 mm × 45 mm; 8 mm thick | CHF 9,800–51,000 |
| Disco Mini | Quartz | 28 mm, 18k white- or rose-gold case, mother-of-pearl dial; bangle or alligator strap | From CHF 16,000 |
Polerouter: the daily-wear proposition
The new Polerouter is the clearest continuation of Genta’s 1954 design brief: a refined everyday watch linked to aviation and polar travel. Its 100 m water resistance and moderate case profile make it the practical sport-luxury option in the launch group.
Its natural comparison set is the modern luxury daily watch, including integrated-bracelet designs from established competitors. The meaningful questions are whether the new case and bracelet preserve the original Polerouter’s visual grammar, how the UG-110 is finished, and whether the price earns a place beside those better-known alternatives.
Rank #3

- Band Buckle Size: 10mm
Compax: a modern chronograph with a difficult benchmark
Compax carries Universal Genève’s strongest historical complication claim because the original wrist chronograph dates to 1936 and the Tri-Compax followed in 1944. The revived watch uses a three-register layout and the UG-200, making movement architecture and finishing central to its appeal.
Rolex Daytona, Zenith Chronomaster Sport and Omega Speedmaster are useful category reference points, not like-for-like equivalents. Compare them on chronograph construction, thickness, winding system, power reserve, historical continuity, service access and price rather than assuming that a shared three-register layout makes the watches interchangeable.
Cabriolet: the reversible dress watch
The Cabriolet revives a reversible-case idea first patented in Universal Genève’s 1933 Ideo. Turning the case protects one side and changes the watch’s presentation, giving the model a functional story that differs from a conventional rectangular dress watch.
Its closest conceptual comparisons are the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso and Cartier Tank families. The comparison should focus on the protection mechanism, proportions, legibility on each side and the amount of handcraft in a particular tier. One capsule edition includes a Tamara de Lempicka miniature and is limited to 15 pieces.
Rank #4
- Band Lug Size: 13mm
- Band Buckle Size: 11mm
Disco Mini: the jewelry-led branch
The Disco Mini is not positioned as a smaller sports watch. It is a 28 mm precious-metal quartz watch with a mother-of-pearl dial, offered either on a bangle or an alligator strap. That makes it the most overtly jewelry-oriented entry in the revival.
A capsule version grows to 32 mm, uses blue mother-of-pearl and adds a 4.4-carat diamond rosette. Because of that gem setting and limited format, its price and scarcity should be assessed separately from the regular Disco Mini.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the revived Universal Genève made in-house?
The 2026 launch reporting explicitly describes the collection as using in-house movements and identifies the UG-110 and UG-200. It also supplies operating data such as winding method, frequency and power reserve for the principal families.
“In-house” does not, by itself, answer every technical question a buyer may have. The published material does not establish the full manufacturing scope, component sourcing, decoration standards, service network or long-term parts policy for each calibre. Those details should be confirmed on the individual reference’s documentation before purchase.

How to judge the revival against alternatives
Use the same six tests for a Universal Genève and any competing watch:
- Historical continuity: Is the watch a direct reinterpretation such as Polerouter or Compax, or a new design using the name?
- Movement: Check calibre identity, automatic versus manual winding or quartz, frequency, power reserve and the evidence behind any manufacture claim.
- Wearability: Compare diameter, thickness, water resistance and unusual geometry such as a reversible case.
- Materials and complication: Separate steel daily watches, gold cases, chronographs, reversible constructions and gem-set pieces before comparing prices.
- Price and scarcity: Identify whether the reference is Prêt-à-Porter, Capsule, Couture Creations or Signature; limited production can dominate the price.
- Access and support: Ask whether the reference is sold through a boutique, authorized dealer or specialist, and how warranty, servicing and parts will be handled.
Where can you buy a Universal Genève watch?
The 2026 launch information establishes the collection and reported pricing, but not a complete global stockist list. Buyers should check Universal Genève or Breitling’s announced boutiques and authorized-dealer channels for their region, then verify the exact reference, currency, taxes, warranty and delivery date in writing.
Specialist dealers and auction platforms remain relevant for vintage Universal Genève watches, especially historic Compax, Tri-Compax, Polerouter and Shadow references. Vintage condition, originality and service history can matter more than the model name alone.
What is still unknown
No independently published market-share, sales or production-volume figures establish how large the revival will become. Availability and prices can also change as the four-tier range rolls out. For now, the strongest evidence supports a Breitling-backed relaunch built around historically significant designs, in-house-labelled movements and pricing firmly above mainstream luxury-watch territory.
