Samsung says the S20 and later Galaxy phones have no built-in heart-rate sensor. To get readings into Samsung Health, pair a compatible Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Fit, Galaxy Ring, or other supported accessory: the wearable measures your pulse, while the S20 displays and stores the synced data. See Samsung’s explanation of the S20’s missing sensor and its current Samsung Health wearable support.
What you need to track heart rate on a Galaxy S20
The S20 is the screen and data hub, not the sensor. You need Samsung Health on the phone and a compatible wearable that can collect heart-rate data. For Samsung watches and relevant accessories, install Galaxy Wearable and pair over Bluetooth. Samsung currently lists Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Fit, and Galaxy Ring as wearable categories for estimated heart-rate data, but support depends on the particular model, software, and region.
- A Galaxy S20 with Samsung Health installed and updated.
- A compatible watch, band, ring, or other accessory with a heart-rate sensor.
- Bluetooth enabled on the S20; Galaxy Wearable for Samsung watches and applicable accessories.
- Any Samsung account or permissions required for the particular sync or feature. Requirements differ by feature, so do not assume every function has the same account requirements.
The Heart rate tile may be visible in Samsung Health even when no wearable is connected. Opening it does not make the phone take a reading. Camera-based apps are not an equivalent Samsung-supported S20 measurement workflow.
Pair a Galaxy Watch with the S20
- Turn on Bluetooth on the S20.
- Open Galaxy Wearable and tap Start or the option to add a device.
- Select your watch model, then follow the pairing prompts on both devices.
- Grant requested permissions and install available updates for Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Health, and the watch.
- Open Samsung Health on the S20 and check whether the watch’s health data appears.
Samsung’s pairing flow uses Bluetooth and Galaxy Wearable; exact labels can differ by One UI, app version, watch model, and software. See Samsung’s Galaxy Watch setup instructions.

Take a manual reading and find it on the phone
On a Galaxy Watch
- Open Samsung Health on the watch.
- Swipe to Heart rate and tap Measure, if that button is shown.
- Sit still and wait for the measurement to finish.
- Open Samsung Health on the S20, then open Heart rate to view the synchronized result.
On some watch models, a current value may appear automatically when continuous monitoring is enabled rather than showing a Measure button. Samsung documents the general watch and band paths, while noting that features differ by device: heart-rate measurement and history.
On a Galaxy Fit or other band
Open the band’s heart-rate tracker and follow its on-screen measurement controls. The exact method varies, and some Galaxy Fit models do not offer manual measurement. Confirm the instructions and Samsung Health support for the specific generation rather than assuming every band has the same controls.
Review the result on the S20
In Samsung Health, open Heart rate to review collected readings, date-based trends, and available activity classifications. You can compare those records with workouts and other Samsung Health entries, but they are descriptive tracking data, not a clinical interpretation.

Choose automatic monitoring on the wearable
Automatic measurement settings are generally controlled on the watch or band, not by the S20. Depending on the model, available modes may include continuous monitoring, periodic readings while still (for example, at intervals such as every 10 minutes), or manual-only measurement. More frequent collection gives you more data points and can use more battery; it is not evidence by itself that readings are more accurate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Wear OS Galaxy Watch: Samsung Health on the watch → scroll to the bottom → Settings → Heart rate.
- Earlier Galaxy Watch models: Samsung Health → Heart rate → scroll down to HR and stress measurement or Auto HR settings.
- Galaxy Fit/Fit2: Galaxy Wearable on the phone → Health settings → Auto heart rate settings.
Labels and choices vary by watch generation and software; if these paths do not match, look in the wearable’s Samsung Health or health settings for heart-rate measurement options.
Record heart rate during a workout
Start the workout on the watch
- Open Samsung Health on the watch and select the exercise.
- Start the workout and wear the watch securely throughout the session.
- End and save the workout when finished.
- Allow the watch to sync, then open the workout in Samsung Health on the S20 to review the available heart-rate graph and exercise statistics.
Start or review from the phone
In Samsung Health on the S20, select the relevant exercise or workout feature. Confirm the wearable is connected and available if you expect it to supply heart-rate readings, then review the saved workout after synchronization. Exercise controls and recorded statistics depend on the watch and software. Samsung’s workout tracking guidance covers selecting exercises and recording statistics with a Galaxy Watch.

A workout pulse reading is not an ECG and cannot diagnose a heart condition. Treat it as exercise and trend information, not as a substitute for medical assessment.
Improve reading quality
- Wear the watch snugly enough to prevent sliding, without making it painfully tight; place it flat against the skin as the model’s instructions recommend.
- Clean and dry the sensor and the skin. A dirty sensor or loose fit can interfere with tracking.
- Stay still and avoid talking during a manual reading; give the device time to acquire a signal.
- After intense exercise, be mindful that movement, sweat, and poor contact can affect the reading.
- If problems persist, try the other wrist, check for updates, and restart the watch and phone.
Samsung identifies loose fit, a dirty sensor, outdated software, and rebooting as relevant troubleshooting factors. It also cautions that readings may be inaccurate on thin wrists and for infants or toddlers. See Samsung’s heart-rate tracking troubleshooting guide.

Fix a missing Heart rate tile or unsynced data
First distinguish between a watch that cannot produce a reading and a reading that exists on the watch but has not reached the S20. If the watch displays a result but the phone does not, investigate pairing and synchronization before assuming the sensor is faulty.

- Check that Bluetooth is on and the devices are near each other.
- Open Samsung Health on the watch and take a manual reading to confirm the wearable can collect one.
- Check Samsung Health sign-in and requested app permissions for the relevant sync features.
- Update Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Health, and the watch software if updates are available.
- Restart both devices, reopen Samsung Health on the S20, and check Heart rate again.
- If syncing still fails, remove and re-add the wearable through Galaxy Wearable.
Not every third-party accessory sends every measurement type to Samsung Health. A device’s ability to measure pulse does not guarantee that its data will appear in Samsung Health.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Heart rate, stress, and Samsung Health Monitor are different things
Samsung Health is where ordinary heart-rate readings, history, and workout-linked data can appear. Stress measurement also relies on heart-rate information and a supported device; the S20 cannot calculate it from a phone heart-rate sensor it does not have.
Samsung Health Monitor is a separate app and feature system for functions such as ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, with other features such as blood pressure or sleep-apnea functions subject to availability. These are not S20-only Samsung Health functions, and they do not follow automatically from ordinary pulse tracking. Compatibility depends on the exact watch and phone, operating system and app versions, feature, eligibility, and country. Samsung’s Health Monitor compatibility and setup information and Health Monitor page should be checked for the current requirements in your market.
Best Value
- The Samsung Galaxy S20+ has a large 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with HDR10+ support, delivering rich contrast and true-to-life colors, perfect for immersive media consumption.
Samsung’s instructions for irregular-heart-rhythm notifications also describe signal limitations involving movement, sensor condition, and skin contact; those cautions relate to Health Monitor measurements and should not be treated as a universal explanation for every ordinary pulse reading. See the Samsung Health Monitor instructions for use.
Which wearable makes sense?
| Device type | Best suited to | Trade-offs and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch | Readers who want watch-based readings, workout heart-rate tracking, and a broader Samsung Health and smartwatch experience. | Cost, battery life, and Health Monitor functions vary by model and region; do not assume every watch supports every feature. |
| Galaxy Fit | Basic activity and heart-rate tracking with less smartwatch complexity. | Features vary by generation, and some models lack manual heart-rate measurement. Check exact S20 and Samsung Health compatibility. |
| Galaxy Ring | Readers who prefer passive tracking and a ring form factor rather than wearing a watch. | It may not suit users who want a visible live workout display. Confirm support for the particular Ring generation, S20 software configuration, and intended features. |
Samsung presents these wearable categories as sources of estimated heart-rate data in Samsung Health, but compatibility and feature behavior can vary. Choose based on whether you need workout visibility, passive tracking, smartwatch features, and Samsung Health synchronization—not simply whether an accessory shows a pulse number.
Use wearable readings cautiously
Heart-rate tracking can help you follow exercise and personal trends, but it is not a diagnosis. ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications, and ordinary pulse tracking are distinct capabilities. Samsung says Health Monitor information is not intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat, or prevent disease, and users should not take clinical action based solely on device output. A reassuring wearable reading does not rule out a medical problem; seek professional care for concerning symptoms, and do not delay emergency care to troubleshoot a device.
