Apple Pay can fail because the watch is locked, the card was never added to the watch, setup or verification is incomplete, a reader does not accept the card, or the issuer declined the payment. Start by identifying which symptom you have; the right fix depends on where the transaction stops.
First, identify where Apple Pay is failing
- Double-clicking the side button does nothing: check that the watch is awake and unlocked, a passcode is enabled, and a card is installed on the watch.
- Wallet opens, but the card is missing: add the card from the paired iPhone’s Watch app; an iPhone card is not automatically proof that the watch has its own usable payment credential.
- The watch asks for a passcode: unlock it before trying to pay. Apple Pay requires a watch passcode.
- You see “Could Not Add Card,” “Invalid Card,” or “Card Device Limit”: setup, issuer eligibility, verification, or a device-registration limit may be involved.
- The card appears but the reader does not react: check how you present the watch and test another contactless terminal.
- The reader reacts but the payment is declined: contact the card issuer; Apple says it does not approve or decline card transactions.
- Only one card fails: troubleshoot that card and its issuer first. If every card fails, check watch setup, software, and service status.
Make sure the card is on the Apple Watch
Check the watch’s payment cards on the paired iPhone: open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch > Wallet & Apple Pay, and look for the card. Apple documents adding a card to the watch separately from adding one to the iPhone, and an issuer may require additional verification or its banking app (Apple’s Apple Watch setup guide).
- If the card is absent, tap Add Card, or tap Add beside a card already stored on the iPhone.
- Complete any verification requested by the issuer.
- When setup finishes, return to Wallet & Apple Pay and confirm the card is listed.
Check the watch passcode
Apple Pay requires a passcode on Apple Watch. Apple says removing the passcode also removes credit, debit, prepaid, transit, and student-ID cards from that device (Apple’s passcode and Apple Pay guidance).
- On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app and tap Passcode.
- Turn on Passcode and create one if needed.
- Unlock the watch, then check My Watch > Wallet & Apple Pay for cards that need to be added again.
Confirm Apple Pay setup requirements
Card setup can fail before you get to the payment terminal. Apple’s current troubleshooting guidance lists requirements and checks that include compatible devices and software, a supported region and issuer, Apple Account sign-in and two-factor authentication, device authentication, and a working connection for setup or verification (Apple’s card setup troubleshooting page).

- Make sure the Apple Watch and paired iPhone support the feature and have the latest software available for those devices.
- Check that you are signed in to your Apple Account and that two-factor authentication is enabled.
- Confirm Apple Pay is available in your country or region and that the issuer supports Apple Pay for that particular card type.
- Use a working internet connection while adding or verifying the card; do not assume that an in-store payment requires the same connection conditions as setup.
- If the watch belongs to a school or employer, ask its administrator whether device-management policies restrict Wallet or payment cards.
Check for an outage, then update and restart both devices
Before repeatedly removing cards, check Apple System Status for Apple Pay. Availability can change, so use the live page rather than relying on an older status report.
If there is no relevant outage, update the iPhone and watch, then restart them. Updates and restarts are low-risk troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.

- On iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update and install any available update.
- In the Watch app, open My Watch > General > Software Update and install any available watchOS update.
- Keep the devices near each other, charged, and connected during the watch update.
- Restart the Apple Watch and iPhone. Unlock both, open the Watch app, and check that the watch is connected before testing Apple Pay again.
If the watch is unresponsive, Apple’s force-restart instructions are available in its support materials. Do not force-restart while the watch is installing an operating-system update.
Remove and re-add only the affected card
If one card is stuck during setup, listed but unusable, or failing after an incomplete update, refreshing that card’s watch credential may help. It is not a guaranteed fix, and the issuer may ask you to verify your identity again.

- On iPhone, open the Watch app and tap My Watch > Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Tap the affected card, then tap Remove Card.
- Restart the iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Return to Wallet & Apple Pay, tap Add Card or Add beside the eligible iPhone card, and complete issuer verification.
You can also remove a card on the watch by opening Wallet, selecting the card, scrolling down, and tapping Remove (Apple Watch card setup and removal steps). If only one card is failing, do not remove every card as a first step.
Interpret the error or payment failure
| What you see | What to check next |

| “Could Not Add Card” | Check issuer participation, region, device and software compatibility, Apple Account authentication, connection, and whether verification is complete. Apple advises contacting the bank or issuer for this error. |
| “Invalid Card” | Check that the card is active and its details are correct, and ask the issuer whether this card type is eligible and has reached a device limit. The message alone does not prove the physical card is defective. |
| “Card Device Limit” | Ask the issuer whether old device registrations need to be removed or another device approved. Apple lists this as an issuer-contact case. |
| “Apple Pay requires a passcode” | Set or enter the watch passcode. If the passcode had been removed, check whether the card needs to be added again. |
| The reader reacts, then the payment is declined | Ask the issuer about a decline, fraud alert, spending block, replacement-card status, or other account restriction. Apple does not approve or decline the transaction. |

Apple lists “Could Not Add Card,” “Invalid Card,” and “Card Device Limit” among errors that may require contacting the bank or card issuer (Apple’s troubleshooting guidance).

Test the watch at another terminal
To pay, double-click the Apple Watch side button, use the default card or scroll to choose another, then hold the watch display within a few centimeters of the contactless reader. Keep it there until you feel a gentle tap and hear a beep, indicating payment information was sent (Apple’s instructions for paying with Apple Watch; Apple’s contactless positioning guidance). That confirmation does not guarantee approval: the merchant, payment network, and issuer must still accept the transaction.
- Try another contactless terminal and confirm the merchant accepts the card’s payment network as well as contactless payments.
- Present the display near the reader, rather than the side or strap, and hold the watch steady for the confirmation.
- If available, try another card on the watch and try the same card with the iPhone.
- If the watch works elsewhere, the first terminal, merchant configuration, or network acceptance is a more likely issue than the watch itself.
Contact the issuer, Apple, or the merchant
Contact the card issuer
Call the number on the back of the card or use the issuer’s official app if verification is required. Contact the issuer for card eligibility or verification failures, device limits, and declined payments. Ask specifically whether a fraud alert, account block, replacement card, or device-registration limit is preventing use.

Contact Apple
Contact Apple Support if multiple supported cards fail on the watch after setup requirements are met, or if the Watch app cannot manage Wallet & Apple Pay, setup remains broken after restart, update, and card re-add, or the watch has broader pairing or software problems.
Contact the merchant
Ask the merchant when the watch works at other locations but a particular terminal does not react or does not accept the relevant payment network.
Leave unpairing or erasing until last
Unpairing or erasing the watch is disruptive and is not a sensible first response to a single failed purchase or one affected card. Try the card-level steps and another terminal first. If multiple cards still fail and the watch has broader pairing or software problems, Apple Support can help decide whether unpairing, re-pairing, or erasing is appropriate; those steps can require restoring watch settings and setting up payment cards again.
Other cases have distinct rules: a replacement card may need fresh issuer verification, transit-card availability and behavior vary by region and transit system, and Apple Card has separate eligibility and setup requirements and is available only in the United States (Apple Card setup information). If a watch is lost, mark it as lost to suspend its ability to pay; Apple’s Watch setup guide also explains removing payment capability from the Apple Account device list.
