As of August 18, 2026, “tracking your diet with Fitbit” usually means logging food and drinks in the redesigned Google Health app while your paired Fitbit or Pixel Watch supplies activity and calorie-burn estimates. The app can record meals, calories, macronutrients, water and weight, but it does not know everything you eat automatically.

The Fitbit app began changing to Google Health on May 19, 2026. Older instructions mentioning the Today tab, Nutrition tiles, Food Plans or Fitbit Premium may therefore lead to screens that no longer exist. Use the current paths below; labels can vary with your phone, account, region and rollout status.

What Fitbit records automatically—and what it does not

Your wearable can collect or estimate activity data, while nutrition data normally comes from you or a connected service.

Data Typical source
Calories burned, steps, exercise, active minutes or Active Zone Minutes, heart rate and sleep Paired Fitbit or Pixel Watch, depending on model and enabled sensors
Weight Manual entry or a compatible connected scale
Food, drinks, serving sizes, calories and macros Manual entry, Google Health Coach suggestions, or an imported nutrition app
Water, caffeine and alcohol Manual entry or connected service

Google’s overview of tracked activities is at Google Health tracked activities. Food and water records are part of the account data experience, but they are not automatically inferred from your watch; see Google Account Fitbit data or legacy Fitbit account data.

Use the current Google Health navigation

Paired Fitbit and Pixel Watch users generally see these tabs:

  • Today: dashboard and quick overview
  • Health: nutrition, food, hydration, weight and other health measures
  • Fitness: activity and workouts
  • Sleep: sleep information

Open Health, then use Focus areas → Nutrition. Tab names and shortcuts can differ by device, operating system, account and rollout; Google describes the current layout at Google Health app overview.

How to log food manually

  1. Open the Google Health app.
  2. Tap Health.
  3. Under Focus areas, tap Nutrition.
  4. Tap the add or log control and choose Food.
  5. Search for the food. Use the exact brand when you can.
  6. Choose a result whose brand, serving unit and calories match your food.
  7. Set the serving size and quantity, then tap Save.

Recently and frequently logged items can speed up repeat entries. Check whether the database entry is per serving or per package, and whether the unit is grams, ounces, pieces, cups or tablespoons. For better accuracy, weigh difficult portions and enter oils, sauces, dressings, toppings and drinks separately. A generic “chicken” or “cereal” result is an average, not necessarily the nutrition in your package.

How to scan a packaged-food barcode

  1. Open Google Health → Health → Nutrition.
  2. Choose Food or the food-log add control.
  3. Tap Scan barcode and allow camera access if asked.
  4. Place the complete barcode inside the scan area under even lighting.
  5. Review the matched product, serving definition and nutrition values.
  6. Adjust quantity and tap Save.

Scanning is a lookup, not a laboratory measurement. Compare the result with the physical label: databases can contain an outdated formulation, a different regional product, an incorrect serving size or incomplete nutrients. Camera and barcode permissions are covered in Google’s phone-permissions guidance.

  • Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]

Log a meal with voice, text or a photo

Where Google Health Coach is available, you can type or say a prompt such as “I ate one banana,” request a calorie or macro entry, or attach a meal photo or file. Coach proposes foods and portions for you to confirm. Photo recognition is only an estimate, especially for mixed dishes, restaurant meals, hidden ingredients, cooking oil and portion size. Review every suggested ingredient and serving before saving; treat these tools as convenience shortcuts rather than automatic nutritional analysis.

Set calorie and macronutrient targets

  1. Open Google Health → Health → Nutrition.
  2. Open Calorie target (or Nutrition settings).
  3. Adjust the calorie range and tap Set goal.
  4. In the same nutrition settings, set targets or ranges for protein, carbohydrates and fat when offered.

The redesigned app no longer supports the old Food Plans workflow, although calorie and macro targets remain available. Google’s general starting guidance includes protein of 1.2–1.4 g per kilogram of body weight and fat at 20%–35% of calories; these are not individualized prescriptions. Calorie targets can be unsuitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for adolescents, eating-disorder recovery, diabetes, unusual athletic workloads or medication-related appetite changes. Use a clinician or registered dietitian for a medical plan.

Track water and hydration

  1. Open Google Health → Health → Nutrition → Hydration.
  2. Enter the amount.
  3. Choose the date and time if you are recording it later.
  4. Select a container option such as a glass, bottle or large bottle.
  5. Tap Save.

Hydration is reviewed separately from food, and current documentation also includes caffeine and alcohol logging. Needs vary with climate, exercise, age, pregnancy, breastfeeding and medical conditions, so a default app target is not a universal requirement.

Relate food intake to calories burned

Calories consumed come from food and drink entries or imports. Calories burned are Fitbit’s estimate based on your profile, movement and device signals. Any remaining calories figure is a calculation using those two estimates and your selected target.

Fitbit Sense 2 Health and Fitness Smartwatch - Shadow Grey/Graphite
  • Learn to manage stress, sleep better and live healthier with Sense 2 – an advanced health and fitness smartwatch
  • Manage stress and live healthier: All-day stress detection with cEDA and daily Stress Management Score, ECG app for atrial fibrillation assessment[1], irregular heart rhythm notifications[2], SpO2[3], health metrics dashboard[4], mindfulness content
  • Measure and improve sleep quality: Daily sleep stages and Sleep Score, smart wake alarm and do not disturb mode
  • Enhance activity: Built-in GPS and workout intensity map, Daily Readiness Score, Active Zone Minutes, all-day activity tracking and 24/7 heart rate, 40+ exercise modes and automatic exercise tracking, water resistant to 50 meters
  • Designed for all-day wear: On-wrist Bluetooth calls, texts and phone notifications[5], customizable clock faces, Amazon Alexa built-in[6], Google Wallet & Maps, 6+ day battery[7]

That balance is useful for observing trends, not for exact accounting or a guarantee that you can “eat back” every displayed exercise calorie. An incomplete meal entry and an imperfect energy-expenditure estimate can move the number in opposite directions.

Put nutrition on the Today dashboard

Open Today, choose the dashboard’s customize or edit control, and add Food & drink, Nutrition or Hydration if those cards are offered. Dashboard controls can differ by app version, so use the equivalent edit option if the wording is different.

When a food or barcode is missing

  1. Check camera permission and try a clean barcode under brighter, even light.
  2. Search the exact brand and product name.
  3. Search a generic food and choose a serving that matches the label.
  4. For a recipe or mixed meal, log ingredients separately when practical.
  5. Enter label values through any custom-food workflow your version provides.
  6. If the built-in database is inadequate, use a specialist food app connected through Health Connect or Apple Health.

Users have reported missing barcodes, inaccurate portion units and unavailable custom-food or quick-calorie options in parts of the rebuilt experience. Those are community reports, not a guarantee that every account behaves the same way; check your current app version and region.

Built-in logging or a specialist app?

Choose It fits when you want Trade-off
Google Health nutrition Basic calories, macros and hydration beside Fitbit activity, sleep and weight; fewer apps Less suitable when you need unusual foods, complex recipes, restaurant detail or extensive micronutrients
MyFitnessPal A dedicated food database, recipe and meal-logging workflow Another app and connected-data permissions to manage
Cronometer Detailed nutrient and micronutrient analysis More detail than some users need

Google names MyFitnessPal and Cronometer as examples that can feed nutrition data into Google Health through Health Connect on Android or Apple Health on iOS. Use one primary food logger; do not enter the same meal in both. Check which app writes nutrition data, review permissions, and disconnect old integrations when switching. Google prioritizes connected sources to reduce duplicates, but inspect the log if a meal appears twice. Official links: MyFitnessPal, MyFitnessPal Premium, Cronometer and Cronometer Gold.

How accurate is Fitbit diet tracking?

  • Barcode: fastest, but verify product, region, formulation and serving.
  • Generic search: convenient average values may not match your brand.
  • Photo or voice: useful for rough logging; ingredients and portions need confirmation.
  • Kitchen scale: more dependable portions, with extra effort.
  • Restaurant food: difficult to estimate because oils, sauces and serving sizes are often unknown.
  • Calories burned: a wearable estimate, not a measured metabolic result.

Consistency matters more than false precision. If calorie counting is stressful or clinically inappropriate, track meal timing, fruit and vegetable servings, protein, fiber or hydration instead, using a professional plan where needed.

Privacy, permissions and feature availability

Food, water, weight, wearable readings and connected-service records can become part of your Google Health/Fitbit data record. Before enabling an integration, review its read and write permissions, connected-app list and account settings. Android synchronization uses Health Connect; iPhone synchronization uses Apple Health.

Google Health Coach and Premium coaching features may require an eligible Fitbit or Pixel Watch, an account holder aged 18 or over, a supported country and the relevant rollout. The United States is listed as supported, but account-level availability can still differ. Fitbit Premium was renamed Google Health Premium on May 19, 2026; recipes are no longer available in the redesigned Premium experience. Basic nutrition logging should not be assumed to require Premium. See the current change details at Google Health and Fitbit redesign information.

Common questions

Does Fitbit automatically track calories eaten?

No. You normally enter food yourself or import it from a connected nutrition service; the wearable estimates activity and calories burned.

Why is a meal showing twice?

It may have been saved in two apps, written by multiple connected services, imported during migration or saved twice after a delayed response. Select one primary writer and review permissions.

Is Google Health Premium required for basic food logging?

Google’s nutrition documentation describes food, water and target logging as Google Health functions; Premium adds coaching-related features. Availability and requirements can vary by region and account.

Can I use Fitbit without counting calories?

Yes. Use activity, sleep, weight, hydration, meal timing or specific nutrients such as protein or fiber without setting a calorie target.
