To reset an Apple Watch and restore its settings, unpair it in the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone. The iPhone attempts to create a watch backup during unpairing, and this route also removes Activation Lock when you enter the associated Apple Account password. Pair the watch again and choose Restore from Backup during setup.
Choose the right reset method
Unpairing and erasing are not interchangeable. Unpair through the iPhone when you plan to reuse the watch, pair a replacement, or transfer the watch to someone else. Erasing directly on the watch is a fallback when the iPhone is unavailable or you cannot unlock the watch; by itself, it does not remove Activation Lock.
| Situation | Use this method | Backup and Activation Lock |
|---|---|---|
| Reuse the watch or pair a replacement | Unpair from the paired iPhone | The iPhone attempts a backup; unpairing removes Activation Lock when you supply the Apple Account password. |
| Sell, give away, or trade in the watch | Unpair from the paired iPhone | A backup is attempted before erasure, and Activation Lock is removed through the unpairing process. |
| No paired iPhone available | Erase on the watch | Do not count on a new backup; Activation Lock remains until the owner removes the watch from their account. |
| Forgot the watch passcode | Reset using the charger procedure below | Restore only if a usable backup is available; resetting this way does not itself remove Activation Lock. |
Apple’s unpairing instructions distinguish removing the watch from the paired iPhone from erasing it on the watch. For a sale or gift, do not hand over a watch that has only been erased on the device: the next user can still be asked for the previous owner’s Apple Account.
Before you unpair
- Keep the iPhone and Apple Watch near each other. Make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled.
- Have the watch passcode and the Apple Account password associated with the watch ready. Apple may require the account password to turn off Activation Lock.
- Decide whether to keep or remove the cellular plan before confirming. The right choice depends on whether you will keep using the watch and plan.
- If the process is taking a while, put both devices on power and avoid interrupting the backup or erase.
- Check that the iPhone has adequate available storage if you expect to make or restore a large iPhone backup.
Unpair Apple Watch from the iPhone
- On the paired iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch, then All Watches.
- Tap the info button beside the watch you want to unpair.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch, then confirm by tapping the option showing the watch’s name.
- If the watch has cellular, choose whether to keep or remove its plan.
- Enter the associated Apple Account password when prompted.
- Wait for unpairing to finish and for the watch to return to its setup screen.
During this process, the iPhone attempts to make a current Apple Watch backup before erasing the watch. Unpairing restores the watch to factory settings and removes Activation Lock. Follow Apple’s unpair and erase guidance if your screen wording differs; labels can vary with software version and language.

Pair again and restore the backup
- Turn on the erased watch if needed, then hold it near the iPhone.
- Follow the pairing prompts in the Apple Watch app.
- When setup asks how to configure the watch, choose Restore from Backup.
- Select the relevant stored backup and continue through setup.
- Keep the devices near each other and, if practical, connected to power while apps and content finish syncing.
Apple Watch backups are handled through the paired iPhone: they are included in iPhone backups, which may be stored in iCloud or on a Mac or Windows PC. There generally is not a separate Apple Watch “Back Up Now” control, and an iCloud backup is not presented as a browsable list of individual watch backup files. Apple describes the restore option in its Apple Watch backup and restore guide.
Keep or remove the cellular plan?
| Choice | When it fits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Cellular Plan | You will keep using the watch, especially with the same iPhone, or are temporarily resetting it. | The carrier may still require reactivation or verification after setup. |
| Remove Cellular Plan | You are selling or giving away the watch, moving the plan to another device, or no longer want service on this watch. | Removing the plan from the watch does not necessarily cancel the carrier subscription. Contact the carrier if you intend to end service. |
Apple explains these choices in its unpairing guidance and pre-sale checklist. The watch’s plan setting and the carrier’s billing account are separate matters.

What a backup does—and does not—restore
A backup is a way to bring back supported watch settings and data, not a promise of an exact clone. What returns depends on the available iPhone backup, account, software compatibility, and synchronization state. Apple says erasing removes items from the watch such as Apple Pay cards, photos, contacts, music, and apps; content stored in iCloud is not deleted. Some apps may no longer be available or compatible.
- Health and activity data: Its return depends on the iPhone backup and account and sync setup. If data is missing, first check that you restored the iPhone backup associated with the watch and are using the intended Apple Account; allow synchronization to complete. Recovery cannot be guaranteed for an incomplete or older backup.
- Apple Pay: Payment cards are removed from the watch on erasure. Add them again through Wallet or watch setup as needed.
- Cellular: Keeping a plan does not guarantee service will resume without carrier activation or verification.
- Accessories and permissions: Bluetooth accessories may need reconnecting, and review app permissions and notification settings after setup.
Apple lists items removed during erasure in its Apple Watch transfer and sale guidance; it does not guarantee that every item or app returns identically in every restore.

If you do not have the paired iPhone
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap General, then Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the passcode if asked, choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan, then confirm with Erase All or the equivalent option shown.
This erases the watch but does not remove Activation Lock or create the same final backup as iPhone unpairing. The Apple Account previously used with the watch is required to activate it again. If preparing the watch for another person, remove it from your account using Apple’s account-based process rather than relying on device erasure. See Apple’s pairing troubleshooting guidance.
If you forgot the Apple Watch passcode
Use this route when the watch cannot be unlocked. It requires the watch to be on its charger, and it is not a substitute for unpairing when the goal is removing Activation Lock.

Restore from Backup is not offered
The watch may not have reached the setup choice yet, or the iPhone may not have a usable stored watch backup. If setup has already configured the watch as new, erase it and begin pairing again so the restore choice can appear. Check that the iPhone is using the account and backup associated with the old watch. Updating compatible devices may help, but does not guarantee a missing backup will become available.

The backup seems missing
A watch backup is not normally a standalone file you can browse in iCloud. It is included with the paired iPhone’s backup. Check whether the relevant iPhone backup was stored in iCloud or on a computer and whether you are using the correct iPhone and Apple Account. Apple explains the relationship in its restore guide.
Pairing or setup appears stuck
- Keep the iPhone and watch close together and connected to power.
- If the process is clearly stalled, restart both devices and reopen the Apple Watch app.
- Retry pairing. If the watch is partly configured, erase it and start setup again.
- If you cannot unlock it, use the charger-based passcode reset above.
Avoid repeatedly erasing the watch before establishing whether a usable backup exists.
Activation Lock still appears
This usually means the watch was erased on the device rather than unpaired through the paired iPhone, or it remains linked to the previous owner’s account. If you still have the watch, pair it with the original iPhone and unpair it properly. If it has already been handed over, the previous owner should use Apple’s account-based removal steps in its sale and transfer guidance. Restoring a backup does not bypass Activation Lock.
Cellular service is unavailable after setup
Check whether you removed the plan during unpairing. If you kept it, the carrier may still require activation, transfer, or verification—particularly if you paired with a different iPhone. Contact the carrier about service or billing; the plan choice during unpairing does not itself cancel a subscription.
Apple Pay cards are gone
This is expected after erasure. Add the cards again through Wallet or watch setup.
Quick Recap
Before selling or giving away the watch
- Unpair using the paired iPhone rather than only erasing on the watch.
- Remove the cellular plan if the watch is changing owners; contact the carrier separately if cancelling service.
- Enter the Apple Account password when requested so Activation Lock is removed.
- Wait until the watch reaches its setup screen before handing it over.
- If the watch is no longer with you, use Apple’s remote erase and account-removal instructions.
