If your Apple Watch repeatedly shows the Apple logo or restarts before reaching the watch face, start with a force restart. If the loop continues, Apple’s next documented step is to unpair the watch from your iPhone and pair it again. That erases the watch, so understand the backup and Activation Lock implications before proceeding. A red exclamation mark, physical damage, or a loop that survives these steps is a reason to contact Apple.
First, identify the problem and protect the watch
A boot loop means the watch repeatedly restarts before it can finish starting. It may show the Apple logo over and over, display a progress indicator and then begin again, or reboot whenever it is removed from its charger. A logo that stays on screen briefly is not automatically a loop: an update or recovery operation can take time. Avoid interrupting a process that appears to be progressing.
Before troubleshooting, place the watch on its magnetic charger, check that the puck is aligned, and use a reliable power adapter. Keep the paired iPhone nearby and charged. If the watch is unusually hot, swollen, physically damaged, has been exposed to liquid, or has a stuck button, stop charging or handling it and seek service instead of repeatedly resetting it. Have the Apple Account password ready if you may need to unpair.
Force-restart the Apple Watch
- Press and hold the side button and Digital Crown at the same time.
- Keep holding until the screen turns black and the Apple logo reappears; do not release just because the screen briefly goes dark.
- Release both buttons and let the watch start.
This is a forced restart, not a factory reset, and it should not erase the watch’s content. Try the procedure once or twice at most. If the watch immediately returns to the same loop, move on rather than repeating it indefinitely. A stuck or unresponsive button can prevent the procedure from working. Apple’s instructions are in If your Apple Watch is stuck on the Apple logo.

If it still loops, unpair and pair the watch again
Apple documents unpairing and pairing again as the next step when a force restart does not resolve an Apple-logo problem. This is more disruptive than restarting: unpairing erases the watch. During normal unpairing from the paired iPhone, the iPhone creates an Apple Watch backup first, which you can choose when setting the watch up again. A backup may not include every recent change or unsynced item.
- Keep the iPhone and watch close together, then open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch > All Watches.
- Tap the information button next to the affected watch, then tap Unpair Apple Watch.
- Confirm, and enter the Apple Account password if prompted.
- If it is a cellular model, choose whether to keep the cellular plan. If you plan to pair this watch again, follow the prompts and choose the option to keep the plan when appropriate.
- Pair the watch again and choose Restore from Backup if a suitable backup is offered.
If restoring a backup brings the loop back, or the loop began immediately after restoring, setting up as a new watch can help determine whether the backup’s settings or data are involved. It is a troubleshooting step, not proof that the hardware is sound. See Apple’s stuck-on-the-Apple-logo instructions for the unpairing flow.

Check for a watchOS update once the watch is usable
If the watch stays paired and can communicate with the iPhone, check for an update in Watch app > My Watch > General > Software Update. Keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi, leave the watch on its charger, keep both devices nearby, and allow the update to finish without interruption. Adequate battery is also important. An update is not a guaranteed fix, especially if the cause is hardware or power-related. Labels may vary slightly by software release. Apple lists this menu path in its Apple-logo support article.
If you see a red exclamation mark or recovery screen
A red exclamation mark is a recovery warning, not just an ordinary frozen logo. Apple’s beta-software support guidance says to hold the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears. If the recovery screen returns or recovery fails, contact Apple; some recovery service described by Apple may require sending the watch to Apple rather than visiting a retail store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. This advice appears in Apple’s guidance about beta software and recovery failures, so it should not be read as a claim that every boot loop requires mail-in service: Apple Developer Support.

If you cannot use the paired iPhone
The watch can open Settings
If the watch reaches its Settings app but the paired iPhone is unavailable, go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. This erases the watch but does not remove Activation Lock. You will need the Apple Account and password associated with the watch to activate it again.
You forgot the watch passcode
- Put the watch on its charger.
- Hold the side button until the power-control screen appears, then release the side button.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until the red Reset button appears.
- Tap Reset, then tap it again to confirm.
This reset also leaves Activation Lock enabled. Apple documents these erase and forgotten-passcode procedures in If you can’t pair an Apple Watch with your iPhone.

Pairing is stuck on its animation
If the watch remains on the pairing animation for several minutes, Apple says to hold the Digital Crown while it is in pairing mode to reveal a Reset option. Reset it, then try pairing again. If pairing still cannot complete, stop and contact Apple rather than cycling through resets.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand what erasing means for backups and Activation Lock
- Unpairing through the paired iPhone: the iPhone creates a backup during the normal unpairing process and removes Activation Lock as part of that process. Restore from an available backup when pairing again.
- Erasing directly on the watch: removes content but leaves Activation Lock enabled. The associated Apple Account credentials are required for activation.
- Resetting without the passcode: also leaves Activation Lock enabled.
This distinction matters especially for a second-hand watch: erasing it does not let a new owner bypass the previous owner’s Activation Lock. Apple explains the pairing and activation requirements in its pairing support article.

Check charging and hardware warning signs
A boot loop alone does not identify its cause. It may involve software, a failed pairing or update, a power or battery problem, a damaged button, liquid exposure, or another hardware fault. If the watch loops while charging, clean and dry the back of the watch and charging puck, check alignment and the charging indicator, and try a known-good Apple-compatible charging setup. Avoid accessories of uncertain quality. Do not try to fix the problem by deliberately draining the battery completely.
Stop troubleshooting and seek service if the watch is abnormally hot, swollen, liquid-damaged, cracked, has a stuck Digital Crown or side button, reboots when moved, cannot hold a charge, repeatedly shows the recovery icon, or remains stuck after an unpair and clean setup. A watch that cannot stay on long enough to pair or update is also unlikely to benefit from more app-based steps.
Arrange Apple Watch service
Apple offers in-person and mail-in service. The watch may need inspection before Apple can give a final out-of-warranty estimate; the estimate can vary by model and may include shipping or tax. Apple or an authorized provider may determine that replacement, rather than a component repair, is appropriate. Check the watch’s warranty or existing AppleCare coverage before arranging service. AppleCare+ accidental-damage fees are not a universal price for an unexplained boot loop; eligibility and plan terms matter. Apple’s service page describes available options and estimates: Apple Watch Service and Repair.
If you use an independent repair provider, ask about its own warranty. Apple states that non-authorized repairs are not covered by Apple’s warranty or AppleCare; see Apple Service and Repair.
