For multiplication, align one factor with the 10 index; for division, align the numerator with the denominator and read the quotient at the index. The scale gives significant digits, not a decimal point, so use the original numbers to determine the answer’s magnitude. Exact scale orientation and extra functions vary by watch, so check the manual for your model.
Identify the scales before you calculate
A slide rule bezel is a circular slide rule built into a watch. Its scales use logarithmic spacing, which lets you perform arithmetic by rotating one scale against another. You do not need to calculate logarithms: line up the marks and read the corresponding value.
Depending on the watch, one scale may be on the rotating bezel and another on the dial, or the layout may differ. Check the labels, indices, units, and manual before starting. The examples below explain the alignment method, but their orientation is not universal.
How to multiply
- Choose the scale marked 10 as the index, and find the first factor on the other scale.
- Rotate the bezel until that first factor lines up with 10.
- Find the second factor on the same scale as the first factor. Read the corresponding value on the aligned scale.
- Use the factors’ magnitudes to place the decimal point in the result.
Casio’s official example aligns 12 on the outer scale with 10 on the inner scale. The 15 mark on the inner scale corresponds to 18 on the outer scale. Since the calculation is 12 × 15, the result is 180—not 18. Casio’s slide-rule bezel FAQ gives this as an example of the method.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Seiko’s rotary slide-rule manual demonstrates the same principle with a different setup: align 30 on the bezel ruler with 10 on the dial ruler, then read the value on the bezel ruler opposite 40 on the dial ruler. The scale shows 12; given the operands’ magnitudes, the result is 1,200. Seiko’s manual also explains division and rule-of-three calculations.
How to divide
- Keep track of which value is the numerator and which is the denominator.
- Align the numerator on one scale with the denominator on the other, rotating the bezel as needed.
- Find the index 10 on the scale used for the denominator. Read the corresponding value on the numerator’s scale.
- Use the original numbers to determine the quotient’s magnitude.
In Casio’s example, 30 on the outer scale is aligned with 15 on the inner scale. The 10 mark on the inner scale corresponds to 20 on the outer scale; with the intended operands, that gives 300 ÷ 15 = 20. The alignment is only meaningful when the numerator and denominator remain assigned to their correct scales.

How to place the decimal point
The scale reading gives significant digits, not a self-contained decimal position. A reading of 12 could represent 1.2, 12, 120, or another power-of-ten value. Work out the answer’s approximate size from the original calculation, then place the decimal accordingly. Casio notes that its watch scale cannot determine the decimal position; Citizen similarly describes its bezel as a general reference rather than a precise calculation tool.
For example, 12 × 15 is greater than 100, so the reading 18 in Casio’s alignment represents 180. In Seiko’s example, the operands imply a result of 1,200, so the reading 12 is interpreted as 1.2 × 10¹ before accounting for the factor of 100 in the original values.

Other functions depend on the watch
Some layouts support more than multiplication and division, but do not assume a function is available just because another watch offers it. Casio documents ratio and travel-time calculations: in its example, a speed of 55 km/h over 330 km corresponds to six hours. Seiko documents rule-of-three calculations. Conversion labels, time scales, and other markings vary by model; follow that watch’s manual.
An aviation E6B circular flight computer uses related circular-scale principles for operations such as time, speed, distance, fuel, and measurement conversions. It is not interchangeable with every watch bezel, and its aviation-specific procedures should not be assumed to apply to a watch. See the FAA Airplane Flying Handbook for E6B context.

When not to rely on the bezel
Use a slide rule bezel for approximate reference calculations, not when a decimal-place error or small inaccuracy could affect safety or an operational decision. Use an appropriate calculator or the authoritative procedure for the task when precision matters. For routine use, learn the specific watch’s scale layout and verify that the markings are legible before calculating.
