What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Quick answer: Open Compass, tap Backtrack, then Record Path. To return, open the recording control, choose Retrace Steps, and follow the displayed path toward the white starting-point dot. When finished, tap Retrace Steps again and choose Delete Path.
Backtrack records the route you actually walk so you can reverse it later. It is a route-retracing aid—not turn-by-turn navigation, a topographic map, or a rescue service.
What Backtrack does—and what it does not
Backtrack stores your travelled path and displays it later so you can return to where recording began. Apple shows that starting position as a white dot. The feature is intended for remote places where you may leave a familiar area or lose reliable connectivity. See Apple’s Backtrack guide.
It does not choose a destination, calculate ordinary street-style turns, identify the best trail, or recognize fallen trees, fences, cliffs, bridges, private property, closures, or other hazards. Apple also warns that it does not account for elevation changes or objects in the environment. Keep a map, a conventional compass, and an appropriate emergency plan for serious trips.

Compatibility and preparation
Apple documents Backtrack for Apple Watch Ultra models, including Ultra and Ultra 2. Apple’s watchOS 26 materials continue to include it on Ultra 3 and can offer a Smart Stack suggestion to start Backtrack in a remote location; treat that as a convenience, not a guaranteed alert. The Compass documentation also describes Backtrack on some non-Ultra models, but the dedicated Action-button workflow is specific to Ultra devices.
Before leaving
- Charge the watch and leave enough reserve for the return and any emergency communication.
- Open Compass before entering the remote section and confirm that it responds normally.
- Start recording at the trailhead, parking area, campsite, or other point you may need to find again—not after you are already unsure of the route.
- Check Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services on the watch. If prompted, allow Compass calibration; on the paired iPhone, calibration is controlled at Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services. Apple’s Compass guide explains these settings.
- Keep the watch away from magnetic clasps, speakers, vehicles, tools, and accessories that can disturb the compass. Apple lists magnetic interference and accuracy limitations in its Compass accuracy guidance.
- Carry paper navigation, water, food, suitable clothing, lighting, and—on genuinely remote trips—an appropriate emergency communicator.
How to start Backtrack from Compass
- Open the Compass app on the watch.
- Tap the Backtrack button, normally shown at the lower-right of the compass view.
- Tap Record Path.
- Walk normally. The watch records your route as you go.
- When you decide to return, tap the recording control. Depending on watchOS version, Apple may show an icon or a label rather than a large text button.
- Tap Retrace Steps.
- Orient the watch and follow the displayed route toward the white starting-point dot. Keep assessing the actual terrain; the display cannot see hazards.
- At the starting area, tap Retrace Steps again, then tap Delete Path when you no longer need that recording.
Deleting an old path avoids confusing it with a new outing. The exact icon appearance can vary with watchOS version, language, and whether the display is recording or retracing.
Using the Ultra Action button
Assign Backtrack to the button
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Action Button, then Action.
- Select Backtrack and return to the previous screen.
Apple’s current watchOS 26 instructions are in Use the Action button on Apple Watch Ultra models.
Record and switch modes
- Press the Action button once to start Backtrack. Tap Record Path if the watch asks for confirmation.
- To change from recording to retracing (or back again), press the Action button and side button together.
Use a normal press for the assigned action. Do not casually hold the Action button: a press-and-hold can be associated with other Ultra functions or safety features, depending on your settings.

How to read the retrace display
Backtrack is a compass-style route display, not necessarily a conventional street map. Keep the watch oriented as you move and use the recorded line and white starting marker to work back along your path. Compass can separately show bearing, elevation, incline, coordinates, and waypoints, but those tools are not additional Backtrack instructions.
Backtrack, Waypoints, and Maps compared
| Tool | Best for | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Backtrack | Returning along the route you just walked | A recorded path and a starting-point marker for retracing |
| Compass Waypoint | Marking one place such as a vehicle, campsite, junction, or water source | A saved location with direction, distance, and relative-elevation information; see Apple’s Waypoint guide |
| Apple Maps or downloaded outdoor maps | Reaching a destination or following a planned route | Destination and map context; Ultra specifications list offline maps with custom route creation separately from Backtrack |
On Ultra, the Action button can be assigned to Waypoint instead of Backtrack. Choose the shortcut that matches your primary need.
Limitations you should plan around
- Terrain: A recorded line does not evaluate cliffs, water crossings, avalanche terrain, private land, or a newly blocked trail.
- Elevation: Backtrack does not compensate for elevation changes.
- Location and compass conditions: Dense trees, cliffs, buildings, poor sky view, unusual watch position, and magnetic objects can reduce reliability. Apple does not publish a universal Backtrack accuracy radius.
- Power: Recording and location work consume battery. Apple lists up to 42 hours of normal use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode for Ultra 3, but those are overall estimates, not guaranteed Backtrack runtimes; GPS activity, temperature, settings, and connectivity change endurance. See the current Ultra 3 product details.
- Connectivity: Backtrack should not be confused with cellular or emergency waypoints. Those services have separate iPhone, plan, software, and regional requirements. A cellular signal is not what creates the recorded route.
- Safety: Backtrack does not send an SOS, contact rescuers, or guarantee a way home.
Troubleshooting Backtrack
The Backtrack button is missing
- Open Compass, not Maps or Workout, and return to the main compass screen if another Compass panel is open.
- Update watchOS if your model supports Backtrack but the control is absent.
- Check Location Services and Compass Calibration.
- Restart the watch if Compass is unresponsive.
- Remove magnetic bands or accessories and move away from vehicles, speakers, tools, and magnetic clasps.
The Compass screen shows a red spinning radar
Apple associates this display with a poor magnetic environment, disabled Location Services, or disabled Compass Calibration. Move to a magnetically cleaner area and recheck both settings using Apple’s Compass instructions.
The compass points incorrectly or the route looks wrong
Stop and check for magnetic interference, an unusual wrist position, weak location reception, heavy tree cover, cliffs, or buildings. Also verify that recording began at the intended starting point. Do not treat an apparently neat line as proof that the terrain is safe.

The Action button starts something else
Go to Settings > Action Button > Action and select Backtrack. Remember that a two-button press (Action plus side button) changes Record/Retrace only when Backtrack is assigned.
Recording stopped or no path appears
Check battery level and location permissions, return to Compass, and confirm that you actually tapped Record Path. Backtrack cannot reconstruct the full earlier journey if recording was never started; begin at the point where retracing may matter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Backtrack enough for hiking?
For an unfamiliar but relatively simple outing, Backtrack is a quick way to preserve and reverse your own route without planning a destination first. It is not sufficient as the sole navigation method for complex trail networks, dangerous terrain, long trips with marginal battery, or situations in which you may be unable to operate or read the watch. Pair it with a map, physical compass, terrain and weather checks, a shared itinerary, and appropriate emergency equipment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Backtrack require cellular service?
Backtrack is distinct from cellular waypoint and emergency features. Do not assume a cellular connection is available or required; keep the watch powered and location services enabled, and carry backup navigation for remote travel.

Does Backtrack need an iPhone?
The watch’s Compass workflow is performed on the watch. iPhone, cellular-plan, and regional requirements that apply to cellular or emergency waypoints are separate features.
Can Backtrack navigate to a destination?
No. It retraces a route you recorded. Use Maps or a planned offline route when you need destination navigation.
How long can Backtrack record?
Apple does not publish a universal Backtrack recording duration. Practical duration is constrained by watch battery, location conditions, and settings.
Can Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 use Backtrack?
Yes. Apple documents Backtrack for Ultra models, and its watchOS 26 materials continue the feature on Ultra 3.
Can I use Backtrack in a city?
You can, but buildings and other obstructions may degrade location and compass performance. It is designed primarily as a remote-route retracing aid.
