Use it when you move the watch to your other wrist or rotate the case so the Digital Crown is on the opposite side. Set both the wrist and Crown position to match the way the watch is physically worn.
What Apple Watch Orientation changes
Orientation tells the watch which wrist it is on and where the Digital Crown sits. The setting adjusts the system display direction, the expected Crown scrolling direction, and wrist-based behavior such as wrist-raise wake. It does not create a separate mirrored operating system, and individual third-party app layouts can still vary. Apple documents these controls in its Apple Watch orientation guide.
Physically flipping the case without changing Orientation can leave the display upside down, make the Crown feel backward, or interfere with wrist-raise detection. The physical arrangement and software selection need to agree.
Set reverse orientation on the Apple Watch
- Decide which wrist will hold the watch and which side of the case the Digital Crown is on.
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap General, then Orientation.
- Select the wrist on which the watch is actually being worn.
- Select the side where the Digital Crown is physically located.
- Leave the menu and test the watch face, Crown, and wrist raise.
Choose the wrist you are using now—not the wrist you normally use if you are temporarily testing the watch on the other arm. Menu wording can differ slightly with watchOS version, language, or region, but Settings → General → Orientation is the key path.

Change orientation from the paired iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap General.
- Tap Watch Orientation.
- Set the wrist and Digital Crown side to match the watch’s physical position.
You only need to change the setting in one place; the watch and iPhone provide two ways to manage the same orientation. The iPhone route is useful when the watch screen is difficult to operate or when helping another person. If more than one watch is paired, confirm that the Watch app is displaying the intended active watch; Apple describes active-watch settings in its settings guide.
Confirm that the setting worked
- Display: The watch face and system interface are upright.
- Digital Crown: Turning the Crown moves lists and content in the direction that feels natural for its new position.
- Wrist raise: Raising the selected wrist wakes the display when that feature is enabled.
- Hardware position: The Crown and side button are where you expect them to be when you reach for them.
Normally no restart is required. If the layout does not visibly change, leave the Orientation screen, lock and unlock the watch, and test again before restarting.

Fix common orientation problems
The screen is still upside down
- Return to Settings → General → Orientation.
- Check the selected wrist.
- Check the selected Crown side.
- Compare both selections with the watch’s actual physical position.
- Return to the watch face and lock and unlock the watch.
- Restart the watch if the display still has not refreshed, then check for a watchOS update if the problem continues.
The Digital Crown scrolls backward
Reopen Orientation and change the Crown-side selection so it matches the case. Orientation, rather than an accessibility or display-rotation control, determines how the watch interprets Crown movement. You do not need to physically flip the watch again unless its hardware position is wrong.
Wrist raise does not wake the display
First confirm the wrist and Crown selections. Then open Settings → Display & Brightness and make sure Wake on Wrist Raise is enabled. Apple’s wake guidance identifies wrist and orientation as relevant checks: Apple Watch wake settings.

If you expect Crown rotation itself to wake the screen, separately check Settings → Display & Brightness → Wake On Crown Rotation. That toggle controls waking; Orientation controls the physical interpretation of the Crown.
Double Tap or other hand gestures behave strangely
Check Orientation first, especially the selected wrist. It is not a universal fix: Apple also lists model and setup requirements, secure fit, tattoos or poor contact, accessibility conflicts, and unsupported screens or apps as possible causes. See Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for Double Tap.

Choosing the Crown position
Either Crown position is valid. Crown toward the hand can shorten the reach and may feel familiar, but the hand can also brush it during exercise or other activities. Crown away from the hand may reduce accidental presses and suit users who operate the watch with the opposite hand, although the controls can take time to locate. These are comfort and habit preferences, not documented performance differences.
No special band is required. Use any compatible band that fits securely and leaves the rear sensors in consistent contact with the skin; clasp design and comfort can vary between bands.

Orientation, health tracking, and calibration
Orientation tells the watch how it is positioned and which wrist is being used. It does not automatically improve heart-rate, activity, or other sensor accuracy. Fit, skin contact, movement, tattoos, and calibration can also affect readings. Treat a persistent sensor problem separately from an upside-down display or reversed Crown.
Quick answer
Open Settings → General → Orientation on the watch—or Apple Watch app → My Watch → General → Watch Orientation on the iPhone—then select the wrist and Digital Crown side that match how the watch is physically worn. Test the display, Crown scrolling, and wrist raise; adjust the separate wake settings if needed.
