Huawei’s Watch Fit 3 did receive a major interface and hardware redesign, validating the broad direction of an April 2024 leak. However, the leak’s suggestion that it might launch with HarmonyOS 4.2 or HarmonyOS NEXT was never confirmed. Huawei’s official Chinese product listing identifies the software as HarmonyOS, version V4.0, while launch coverage describes a new “HarmonyOS square-watch UX.”
What the original Watch Fit 3 report actually claimed
On April 27, 2024, Gizmochina reported claims from Weibo tipster Fixed Focus Digital that the upcoming Watch Fit 3 would receive a substantial user-interface change based on a newer HarmonyOS wearable version. The report speculated about HarmonyOS 4.2 or possibly HarmonyOS NEXT, with smoother animations, larger fonts, more room for icons and additional watch faces. Huawei had not confirmed those details at the time.
The wording matters: this was a leak, not a Huawei announcement. “HarmonyOS for Wear” also does not mean Google’s Wear OS. Huawei’s wearable software is a separate platform and does not provide the Google Play smartwatch ecosystem associated with Wear OS.

What Huawei launched in 2024
The released Watch Fit 3 changed more than its menus. It moved from the narrow fitness-band silhouette associated with earlier Fit models to a square watch body built around a 1.82-inch AMOLED screen with 408 × 480 resolution. The listed Chinese model weighs approximately 26 grams without its strap and adds a rotating crown and a second function button.

Huawei’s Chinese launch coverage called the design direction “鸿蒙方表UX,” or HarmonyOS square-watch UX, describing it as the first product to introduce the company’s square-watch style. The Chinese product listing also specifies built-in satellite positioning, Bluetooth calling, 5 ATM water resistance and IP6X dust resistance.

How the interface changed in practice
A layout designed for a square display
The wider screen supports a more conventional smartwatch presentation instead of the elongated cards used by many fitness bands. Data views, controls and activity information can use larger horizontal layouts, while the crown provides a more obvious way to scroll and select items.
More color and watch-like data screens
Wareable observed that Huawei overhauled many data screens with colorful gradients and a visual approach that resembles some watchOS screens. That makes the Fit 3 look more like a general-purpose smartwatch than an expanded tracker, although resemblance in styling does not make it an Apple Watch or give it Apple’s software ecosystem.

Not every prediction was confirmed
The released product supports broad watch-face customization, but the specific leak predictions about larger fonts, extra icon space and a substantially larger watch-face catalogue were not all independently confirmed. Wareable considered some menus less polished and criticized the watch-face selection, so the redesign is best described as substantial but uneven rather than a complete software reinvention.

Did the Watch Fit 3 launch with HarmonyOS NEXT?
There is no reliable confirmation here that it did. The original report floated HarmonyOS NEXT as a possibility, but Huawei’s official Chinese product page lists the operating system generically as HarmonyOS and identifies the software as terminal Harmony smart-device operating system V4.0.
The defensible conclusion is therefore:
- Major design change: broadly confirmed by the released hardware and square-watch UX.
- HarmonyOS-based wearable software: confirmed.
- HarmonyOS 4.2 specifically: not established by the cited official product page.
- HarmonyOS NEXT at launch: not verified.
Later firmware can differ by market and may change features. A later update or a support page for one country should not be treated as proof that every Watch Fit 3 shipped with the same software version.

Features beyond the redesign
The interface sits on a fitness-focused product rather than a full app-platform smartwatch. Huawei lists a Vitality Three Rings activity system, weight-loss and body-shaping tools, smart workout recommendations, more than 100 workout modes, TruSeen 5.5 heart-rate monitoring, TruSleep 4.0 sleep tracking, satellite positioning and Bluetooth calling.
Huawei states battery figures of up to 10 days in its longest-use scenario, seven days under typical use or four days with always-on display enabled. These are Huawei’s stated scenarios, not guaranteed results; GPS use, notifications, calls, health monitoring and display settings affect endurance.
The official material also lists heart-rate, SpO2, sleep, stress, menstrual-cycle and arrhythmia-analysis functions. Availability can depend on region, phone platform and software version, and the listed model does not include some higher-end Huawei-watch functions such as ECG.

Huawei’s global compatibility table lists Android 8.0 or later, HarmonyOS 2 or later and iOS 13 or later. Core functions such as notifications, exercise tracking, heart-rate monitoring, sleep tracking, alarms, timers and weather are supported, but feature parity varies.

The Chinese WeChat requirements should not automatically be applied to global models. Check the support page for your country, watch firmware, phone operating system and Huawei Health version.

What independent testing says
In its hands-on review, Wareable found the watch light and comfortable, especially with the nylon strap. The reviewer reported strong workout results, including good running distance and heart-rate agreement against comparison equipment, and praised Huawei Health and automatic syncing to Strava. Those are one reviewer’s test results, not a guarantee for every user.
The same review identified the weaker app and integration ecosystem as a disadvantage versus Apple Watch and other rivals. Some menus remained inconsistent, and the watch lacks the wider third-party app support of Wear OS or watchOS.

The Fit 3 is not a full Apple Watch replacement and should not be bought as a Wear OS device. It is a lightweight fitness smartwatch whose square screen and colorful interface make it more watch-like than earlier Fit models, while its app ecosystem and phone-specific features remain narrower.
Before buying, check the current regional product page and compatibility table—especially if you use an iPhone, need third-party apps, rely on messaging features or are shopping in the United States, where retail availability, warranty and services may differ from China and Europe.
