I bought my Rolex Sea-Dweller ref. 16600 back because it occupies a rare middle ground: a genuinely engineered saturation-diving instrument in a restrained 40 mm case. After living with larger, newer watches, I missed the 16600’s proportions, period character and the confidence that comes from owning a discontinued reference with a clear, useful purpose.
What the Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600 is
Reference 16600 is a discontinued, pre-owned Sea-Dweller produced from 1988 until 2008, according to Bob’s Watches’ buying guide. Its core specification is straightforward:
| Specification | Ref. 16600 |
|---|---|
| Production | 1988–2008 |
| Case diameter | 40 mm |
| Movement | Automatic |
| Crystal | Sapphire |
| Bezel | Unidirectional, 60-minute scale |
| Bracelet | Oystersteel |
| Water-resistance rating when new and correctly maintained | 4,000 feet (1,220 metres) |
Those numbers explain the watch’s appeal, but they do not guarantee the condition of a 20-year-old example. The reference number tells you what the design was built to do; the individual watch’s seals, crown, crystal, case and service history determine what it can safely do today.
Why I sold it, then bought it back
The 40 mm case is easier to live with
My reason for returning was practical before it was nostalgic. The 16600 has the visual authority of a professional diver without the wrist presence of many later Sea-Dwellers. Forty millimetres gives the dial enough room for legibility while keeping the watch manageable under a cuff, at a desk or during a full day of wear.

That is a personal wearability judgment, not a universal measurement of comfort. Wrist shape, bracelet adjustment and tolerance for thickness matter. For me, the 16600 disappeared into daily life more successfully than larger modern divers, yet never felt fragile or anonymous.
It has a distinct period identity
A current production watch can be technically impressive and still feel interchangeable. The 16600 carries the visual language of the late 20th-century tool watch: compact proportions, an aluminum-era design vocabulary and a straightforward instrument layout. The exact dial, hands, bezel insert and bracelet condition vary by year and example, so “period character” is not a license to overlook originality or damage. It is the reason those details matter to me.
The specification gives the nostalgia a foundation
I did not buy it back merely as a vintage-style object. Rolex created the Sea-Dweller for prolonged underwater missions, and the company describes the watch as having been developed with pioneers of professional deep-sea diving. The 16600’s 4,000-foot rating and helium escape valve make that history functional rather than decorative, even though almost no owner will use the watch at its theoretical limit.

Why the helium escape valve matters
During saturation diving, divers may spend extended periods in a pressurized helium-rich environment. Helium atoms can enter a watch case; during decompression, the pressure inside the case can rise faster than the crystal and gaskets can safely release it. Rolex patented its helium escape valve in 1967 so excess pressure could leave the case during decompression in a hyperbaric chamber.

How deep can a Sea-Dweller 16600 go?
The stated rating is 4,000 feet (1,220 metres). Rolex’s history of the Sea-Dweller says the line began with a 610-metre (2,000-foot) guarantee and reached 1,220 metres from 1978 onward. That rating describes a properly assembled and tested watch under the manufacturer’s conditions; it is not a promise that every pre-owned 16600 remains dive-ready.

- Compatibility Check: Double-check your watch's requirements and compatibility details to ensure the product meets your needs. This will help you avoid any issues with returns or exchanges.
- Design: The black finish offers a classic look, perfectly complementing the Sea-Dweller's rugged design.
Before taking a used example into water, have a qualified service centre inspect it and perform a pressure test. A watch can look perfect while an aged gasket, damaged crown tube, compromised crystal or poorly closed caseback has reduced its resistance.
16600 versus a Submariner or a later Sea-Dweller
There is no universally better choice. The right comparison is between the exact references and the condition of the individual watches, not between collection names.

| Decision point | Sea-Dweller 16600 | Submariner | Later Sea-Dweller |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrist comfort | 40 mm case; comparatively compact for a Sea-Dweller | Depends on the specific generation and date/no-date configuration | Modern models generally have a larger, heavier visual presence; verify the exact reference |
| Depth and helium system | 4,000 feet/1,220 metres and a helium escape valve | Choose according to the reference’s published depth rating and whether saturation-diving capability is relevant | Higher-specification professional diver format; ratings and dimensions vary by reference |
| Date and crystal | Date display and sapphire crystal | Date and no-date versions exist; confirm the individual reference | Date display and sapphire crystal on current Sea-Dweller designs; confirm the model |
| Movement and service | Automatic movement; condition and service documentation are decisive | Movement generation varies by reference | Newer movement generations may offer different service considerations |
| Ownership status | Discontinued since 2008; all purchases are pre-owned | Availability depends on the reference and market | Some references remain in production while others are discontinued |
The Submariner usually makes more sense if you want a simpler everyday diver and do not need the Sea-Dweller’s saturation-diving architecture. A later Sea-Dweller suits someone who prioritizes contemporary construction and accepts more wrist presence. I chose the 16600 because its case size delivers the professional identity without overwhelming my wrist.

What to check before buying a pre-owned 16600
Because production ended in 2008, the seller and the watch’s paper trail deserve as much attention as the asking price.
- Confirm the seller. Use a reputable dealer with a written return policy, an authenticity guarantee and clearly stated warranty coverage. Bob’s Watches recommends those protections when buying a pre-owned example.
- Match the reference and serial. Check that the reference and serial information on the watch, paperwork and service records are consistent. Ask the seller to explain any discrepancy before payment.
- Inspect the dial and hands. Look for moisture damage, relume, replacement parts, uneven printing and lume that does not match the claimed production period. Originality can matter more than a superficially attractive restoration.
- Examine the case and bezel. Over-polishing can erase lug geometry and crown-guard definition. The bezel should turn in one direction with positive, even clicks, and the crystal should be free of chips or edge damage.
- Evaluate the bracelet and clasp. Check link stretch, missing screws, clasp wear, end-link fit and the condition of the adjustment system. A worn bracelet can be expensive to replace and changes how the watch wears.
- Request service evidence. A dated invoice or service report is more useful than a verbal assurance. Ask what was replaced, whether the movement was regulated and whether water resistance was tested.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified watchmaker verify the movement, case integrity and pressure-test result during the return period if the seller permits it.
- Treat box and papers as supporting evidence. They can improve provenance and completeness, but they do not replace a movement inspection or establish authenticity by themselves.
You can review pre-owned Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600 listings only after deciding which condition, provenance and service compromises you will accept. The link is useful for comparing examples, not for treating the lowest listing as a fair value.

Regular maintenance should be based on the watch’s condition, use and the service provider’s findings rather than an arbitrary promise that every example can run indefinitely. Have the crown, gaskets, crystal, caseback and bracelet checked whenever the watch is serviced, and request a documented waterproofness test before swimming or diving.

Do not assume that a 16600 remains safe underwater because the reference was originally rated to 4,000 feet. Water resistance is a present-tense property of a particular watch. A failed pressure test means the watch needs attention before exposure to water, regardless of how clean the dial looks.
For maintenance, use verified watch-care and service resources that identify the technician, the work performed and the testing completed.
Is the Rolex Sea-Dweller 16600 still worth buying?
It can be, if your priorities align with its trade-offs. The 16600 offers a rare combination of a compact classic case, serious professional-diver engineering, sapphire protection and a discontinued reference with a long ownership history. It is less suitable if you require a new-watch warranty, modern bracelet adjustment, untouched factory condition or the convenience of buying directly from current production.
No responsible current price can be stated as a single number. Value varies with year, originality, service history, bracelet condition, box and papers, geography and seller. The right question is whether a particular watch is correctly authenticated, fairly priced for its condition and affordable to service—not whether every 16600 deserves the same valuation.

I bought the Sea-Dweller 16600 back because it gives me enough technical substance to feel purposeful and enough restraint to wear without negotiation. Its 40 mm proportions are the feature I missed most, but the buyback only made sense because the proportions are attached to a real professional specification: a 4,000-foot rating, a unidirectional timing bezel, sapphire crystal and a helium escape valve developed for saturation-diving decompression.
Buy the example, not merely the reference. If the serial, components, service record, seller and pressure test all withstand scrutiny, the 16600 remains one of the most convincing everyday professional-diver watches for someone who wants classic scale and long-term ownership confidence.
