The Tudor Black Bay began in 2012 as a 41 mm burgundy-bezel heritage diver and, by 2024, had grown into a family spanning 37, 39 and 41 mm cases, steel, bronze, ceramic, silver and gold, conventional divers, two GMT formats and METAS-certified movements. The central choices are straightforward: the 41 mm Black Bay preserves the original wrist presence, the 39 mm Black Bay Fifty-Eight is the best-balanced vintage size, the 37 mm Black Bay 54 is the smallest and most historically faithful, and the GMT, Pro and material variants trade some simplicity for travel utility or technical distinction.
How the Black Bay started in 2012
The first Black Bay was the Heritage Black Bay reference 79220R, introduced in 2012 as a 41 mm diver with a burgundy bezel, gilt details, snowflake hands and 200 m water resistance. Its design deliberately drew on Tudor references 7922, 7924 and 7016 rather than reproducing one historical watch. Tudor’s launch material connected the watch with the brand’s return to the US market, and the model won the GPHG Revival prize.

That original watch established the visual formula that still defines the collection: a large crown, a simple elapsed-time bezel, vintage-inspired dial furniture and the square-tipped “snowflake” hour hand. Early Black Bays used the ETA 2824 automatic movement. The later transition to Tudor manufacture calibres is the dividing line between the first generation and the modern mechanical platform.
The complete Black Bay timeline
2012 — Heritage Black Bay 79220R
- Case: 41 mm steel
- Bezel and dial: burgundy bezel, gilt styling and black dial
- Function: three-hand diver with 200 m water resistance
- Movement: ETA 2824
- Historical role: the model that introduced the Black Bay name and design language
2014 — Blue 79220B
The 79220B kept the original matte black dial and silver-white furniture but replaced the burgundy bezel with navy blue. It showed that the Black Bay design could support a new colorway without changing its basic identity.

- 41mm steel case with polished and satin finish
- Bidirectional rotatable bezel in steel with 24-hour graduated anodised aluminium disc
- Self-winding mechanical movement with 70 hour power reserve
2015 — Black/red-triangle 79220N
The 79220N used a black bezel with a red triangle at 12 o’clock. Its unusually short production period has made it the most collectible of the early ETA-powered references, although production scarcity alone does not make every example valuable: condition, originality and service history remain decisive.
2016 — Manufacture 41 mm Black Bay and Black Bay Bronze
In 2016 the steel 41 mm line moved from ETA 2824 to Tudor’s MT5602 manufacture calibre. The new movement brought a silicon balance spring, COSC certification and a 70-hour power reserve. The same period introduced the 43 mm Black Bay Bronze reference 79250BM, powered by the MT5601. Bronze cases, brown bezels and dials and Arabic numerals gave that model a deliberately tool-watch character, while the case develops a surface patina over time.
2018 — Black Bay GMT 79830RB
The first Black Bay GMT added a 24-hour red-and-blue (“Pepsi”) bezel, a date and a traveller-GMT mechanism. Its MT5652 movement provides an independently adjustable local-hour hand, so the wearer can change local time without stopping the watch or losing the reference time. The reserve is 70 hours.
2018 — Black Bay Fifty-Eight
The Black Bay Fifty-Eight reduced the case to 39 mm and took its name from 1958, the year Tudor introduced the 200 m reference 7924 “Big Crown.” Tudor describes that historical link this way: “The Black Bay 58 is named after the year in which the first TUDOR divers’ watch, waterproof to 200 metres, the reference 7924, dubbed the ‘Big Crown’, was introduced.” Its MT5402 manufacture calibre supplies a 70-hour reserve.

2020 — Fifty-Eight Blue
The Fifty-Eight Blue retained the 39 mm case and 200 m diver format while changing the dial and bezel to blue. Mechanically it belongs to the same MT5402-powered platform as the original black-and-gilt Fifty-Eight.
2021 — Fifty-Eight Bronze, Silver 925 and 18k Gold
Three material branches broadened the 39 mm collection in 2021:
Rank #2
- Tudor Black Bay 54 Automatic Chronometer Black Dial Men's Watch M79000N-0001
- Fifty-Eight Bronze: a boutique model with a bronze case, brown styling and a matching bronze bracelet.
- Fifty-Eight 925: a silver case with a taupe dial and bezel. Silver changes appearance as it reacts with the environment, so its finish will not remain identical to polished steel.
- Fifty-Eight 18k: an 18-karat-gold case with a green dial and bezel.
Display-back configurations in these material models use the enlarged MT5400 architecture rather than the closed-back MT5402 layout.
2021 — Black Bay Ceramic
The Black Bay Ceramic introduced a monobloc ceramic case and a blacked-out MT5602-1U movement. It was the first Black Bay branch to receive Master Chronometer certification, placing it at the technical as well as the visual extreme of the range.

2022 — Black Bay Pro
The Black Bay Pro is a 39 mm expedition-style watch with a fixed steel 24-hour bezel, a yellow GMT hand and the MT5652 movement. At 14.6 mm thick, it wears more like a compact instrument than a thin vintage diver. It shares the GMT calibre family with the larger Black Bay GMT but is positioned as a rugged explorer: the fixed bezel is intended for reading a second time zone rather than timing a dive.
2023 — Burgundy 41 mm update
The burgundy 41 mm Black Bay was substantially updated in 2023. It received the MT5602-U with METAS Master Chronometer certification, a thinner 13.6 mm case, a revised crown, dial and seconds hand, and a new Jubilee-style bracelet. The update improved the original 41 mm format without abandoning its burgundy identity.
2023 — Black Bay 54
The Black Bay 54 reduced the diver to 37 mm, making it the smallest modern Black Bay. Its proportions are intended to be the most historically faithful modern interpretation of Tudor’s early 1950s divers. The watch uses the MT5400, retains 200 m water resistance and accepts 20 mm aftermarket straps. Strap fit still depends on the exact reference and end-link geometry; “20 mm” is not a guarantee that every curved or fitted strap will work.
2024 — Black Bay Monochrome
The Black Bay Monochrome brought a genuinely black-and-white 41 mm diver to the collection: black dial and bezel, silver-white accents and no red triangle. It is not merely a black colorway of the old design; removing the red accent gives the watch a deliberately monochrome identity.

2024 — Black Bay Fifty-Eight GMT
The Black Bay 58 GMT brought a traveller-GMT to the 39 mm case for the first time. Its black-and-burgundy 24-hour bezel, date and MT5450-U movement are paired with COSC and METAS certification, 200 m water resistance and a 65-hour power reserve. It is the compact travel alternative to the 41 mm Black Bay GMT, while remaining distinct from the fixed-bezel Black Bay Pro.
Black Bay sizes and what they mean on the wrist
| Branch | Case diameter | Primary purpose | Movement and reserve | Best fit for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black Bay | 41 mm | Heritage diver | MT5602 family, generally 70 hours | Wearers who want the original, substantial Black Bay presence |
| Black Bay Fifty-Eight | 39 mm | Vintage-proportioned diver | MT5402, 70 hours; material/display-back versions use MT5400 architecture | Most wrists and anyone seeking a period-appropriate size without going small |
| Black Bay 54 | 37 mm | Historically faithful diver | MT5400; reserve not separately stated in the supplied specifications | Smaller wrists or buyers prioritizing early-Tudor proportions |
| Black Bay GMT | 41 mm | Traveller GMT with date | MT5652, 70 hours | Frequent travelers who prefer a larger case and bidirectional 24-hour bezel |
| Black Bay Pro | 39 mm | Fixed-bezel expedition GMT | MT5652; reserve not separately stated in the supplied specifications | Travelers who want a compact, rugged explorer rather than a dive bezel |
| Black Bay 58 GMT | 39 mm | Traveller GMT with date | MT5450-U, 65 hours | Travelers wanting GMT functionality in the Fifty-Eight size |
Diameter is only part of fit. The 41 mm models have the broadest visual presence; the 39 mm Fifty-Eight and GMT Pro sit between vintage and contemporary wear; and the 37 mm 54 has the shortest, most compact footprint. Thickness, lug shape, bracelet articulation and clasp adjustment can change the experience as much as two millimetres of diameter.
Black Bay GMT, Black Bay Pro or Black Bay 58 GMT?
Choose the 41 mm Black Bay GMT for the classic travel-diver layout
The Black Bay GMT combines a rotating 24-hour bezel, date and independently adjustable local hour hand in a 41 mm case. It is the most overtly traditional “GMT watch” of the three, with a Pepsi bezel and the largest wrist presence.
Choose the Black Bay Pro for a fixed-bezel tool watch
The Pro uses the same MT5652 movement family but changes the operating concept. Its steel 24-hour bezel does not rotate, and its 14.6 mm thickness, snowflake hour hand and yellow GMT hand emphasize an expedition instrument. It is the better match for someone who values a compact, highly legible explorer over a dive-watch silhouette.
Choose the 58 GMT for a 39 mm traveller GMT
The 58 GMT is the current middle ground: a 39 mm case, black-and-burgundy bezel, date and traveller-GMT operation. Its MT5450-U adds METAS certification, but its 65-hour reserve is shorter than the 70 hours specified for the core MT5652 and MT5602-family movements. The choice is therefore about proportion and certification as much as complication.
Materials: steel, bronze, ceramic, silver and gold
- Steel: the default Black Bay material, balancing durability, serviceability and the collection’s original look.
- Bronze: used for the 43 mm Black Bay Bronze and 39 mm Fifty-Eight Bronze. The alloy is intentionally expressive and develops patina, so two watches will not age identically.
- Ceramic: the 2021 Black Bay Ceramic uses a monobloc ceramic case and a blacked-out movement, giving the diver its most contemporary, stealth-oriented appearance.
- Silver 925: the Fifty-Eight 925 uses a taupe palette and a precious-metal case whose surface changes with exposure.
- 18k gold: the green-dial Fifty-Eight 18k moves the line into high-end precious-metal territory while retaining the 39 mm case concept.
These materials are not just cosmetic alternatives. Bronze and silver change visibly with wear, ceramic alters the case’s scratch and impact trade-offs, and gold changes weight and cost substantially. Bracelet, strap and clasp details also vary by reference, so a material comparison should include the supplied wearing system rather than the case alone.

Movements, certification and performance
ETA beginnings
The 2012–2015 references used the ETA 2824. They are the historically first Black Bays and can be attractive to collectors who specifically want the original movement generation, but they do not have the 70-hour reserve or manufacture-calibre architecture that defines later models.
CosC manufacture generation
The 2016 41 mm update introduced the MT5602, while the 2018 Fifty-Eight used the smaller MT5402. Tudor specifies a 70-hour reserve for these core manufacture movements and a silicon balance spring; the 2016 steel models also carried COSC certification. The MT5652 added to the GMT models provides the independently adjustable local-hour function.

METAS Master Chronometer
METAS appears on selected high-end Black Bays rather than every reference. The Black Bay Ceramic was the first Black Bay Master Chronometer branch. The 2023 burgundy 41 mm update uses the MT5602-U, and the 2024 Black Bay 58 GMT uses the MT5450-U with both COSC and METAS certification.
Tudor states that METAS requires a Master Chronometer watch to run within 0/+5 seconds per day and to maintain timekeeping when exposed to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss. Its certification is broader than a rate test: “METAS Master Chronometer certification is comprehensive and covers the main functional characteristics of a watch including precision, resistance to magnetic fields, waterproofness and power reserve.”
Bracelets, straps and practical ownership details
The Black Bay family has used riveted-style steel bracelets, three-link bracelets, fabric straps, rubber options and the newer Jubilee-style bracelet, depending on the reference and release. Clasp adjustment and bracelet taper can materially affect comfort, so check the exact configuration rather than assuming that two watches with the same diameter wear identically.
For the 39 mm Fifty-Eight and 37 mm Black Bay 54, 20 mm aftermarket watch straps are a relevant replacement category. Confirm the reference, lug profile and end-link geometry before ordering: a nominally 20 mm strap may fit the lug width yet leave gaps or interfere with a fitted end link.

Which Black Bay should you choose?
For the original Black Bay character
Pick a 41 mm steel Black Bay, especially the burgundy family. It preserves the proportions and visual weight established in 2012.
For the best all-round size
The 39 mm Fifty-Eight is the broadest recommendation. It keeps 200 m diving capability and vintage cues while being easier to wear than the 41 mm case on many wrists.
For the smallest and most historically faithful diver
Choose the 37 mm Black Bay 54. It is the smallest branch and the closest modern expression of the early Tudor-diver proportions.
For frequent international travel
Choose between the 41 mm GMT, 39 mm Pro and 39 mm 58 GMT based on the bezel and case you want: rotating Pepsi bezel and date on the GMT, fixed steel 24-hour bezel on the Pro, or the compact black-and-burgundy traveller GMT with METAS certification on the 58 GMT.

Bronze is the choice for evolving patina, ceramic for a dark contemporary case, silver for changing precious-metal surfaces and gold for maximum precious-metal presence. The steel models remain the simplest daily-wear option.
The Black Bay’s 2012–2024 arc
Across twelve years, Tudor expanded one heritage diver into a coherent set of sizes, complications and materials without abandoning the snowflake hand, large crown and tool-watch foundation. The progression is easiest to understand as three overlapping tracks: the 41 mm Black Bay that carries the original presence, the 39 mm Fifty-Eight family that refines vintage proportions, and the 37 mm 54 that goes furthest back in historical scale. GMT, Pro, ceramic, bronze, silver, gold and METAS models then add specific use cases or technical status rather than replacing those core identities.
