The DD540 is Dubois Dépraz’s first integrated column-wheel chronograph: a self-winding, flyback movement that moves the Vallée de Joux company beyond its long-established role as a supplier of add-on complication modules. Its architecture puts the chronograph in the calibre itself, while a horizontal clutch, a three-day-class power reserve and an unusual concentric chronograph display give the movement a distinct technical identity.
What the DD540 is
Dubois Dépraz introduced the DD540 as its first integrated column-wheel chronograph. “Integrated” means the chronograph works are designed into the base calibre rather than installed as a separate mechanism on top of another movement. The result is a complete manufacturer movement intended for watch-brand projects, not a consumer movement sold as a standalone retail product.
| Specification | DD540 |
|---|---|
| Architecture | Integrated, self-winding flyback chronograph |
| Control and coupling | Column wheel with horizontal clutch |
| Dimensions | 32 mm diameter × 6.60 mm thick |
| Frequency | 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) |
| Jewels | 51 |
| Power reserve | More than 72 hours; Dubois Dépraz describes this as a three-day reserve |
| Calendar | Instantaneous date |
| Chronograph display | Central chronograph seconds; concentric chronograph hour and minute hands on one register |
| Additional indication | Power-reserve display |
The combination is notable because the movement is not merely a conventional integrated chronograph with familiar three-register indications. It uses one subdial for two chronograph counters, with the hour and minute hands arranged concentrically, while chronograph seconds remain central.
Why this is a strategic change for Dubois Dépraz
Dubois Dépraz traces its origins to Marcel Dépraz’s company, founded in 1901 in Switzerland’s Vallée de Joux. The firm built its reputation by developing chronograph and other complication mechanisms for watch brands. Its history includes work on the modular Chronomatic calibre 11 project in the 1960s and later modules such as the DD 2000, which allowed chronograph functionality to be added to ETA or manufacture base movements.

- The product material is strong, durable, long service life.
- It can be used as spare parts to facilitate the replacement of your movement.
- Model: For VK63A
- Outer diameter: 30.8 mm. Case diameter: 29 mm
- Height: 5.1mm Date Position: H3
That background makes the DD540 more than another new calibre. A module specialist is now offering a complete integrated architecture, taking responsibility for the base movement, chronograph mechanism and their interfaces as one design.
The company’s current official profile describes an independent business active in complications, components and custom-made work, with 420 employees in the Vallée de Joux and Arch. In a 2025 company interview, Pascal Dubois described output as approximately 40,000 modules per year and around one million components, if not more, as a contractor. Those are approximate interview figures, not an audited annual report.
Integrated versus modular chronographs
Both architectures can produce a capable chronograph, but they solve the engineering and sourcing problem differently.

| Engineering axis | Integrated chronograph | Modular chronograph |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Chronograph works are designed into the base calibre | A separate chronograph mechanism is mounted on a base movement |
| Vertical space | Can package the mechanism more directly within the movement | The added layer generally increases total movement height |
| Adaptability | The calibre is a complete, dedicated design | One module can be paired with several suitable base movements |
| Case and controls | Layout is engineered as a unified system | The extra layer can affect pusher placement and can make a date appear recessed |
| Economics | Usually demands a larger, dedicated development programme | Generally offers a more economical way to add chronograph functionality |
| Supply model | DD540 is offered as a manufacturer movement for brand projects | Modules are supplied to be combined with a brand’s selected base calibre |
“Integrated” does not automatically mean thinner, more accurate or easier to service. It means the chronograph is part of the movement’s original architecture. A module can be the more rational choice when a brand needs to reuse an existing base calibre across several references, while an integrated movement gives the designer direct control over the whole mechanism and its proportions.

Column-wheel control
The column wheel is the chronograph’s command component. Its shaped columns coordinate start, stop and reset operations as the pushers are pressed. The arrangement is traditional and mechanically legible: the switching levers engage with the wheel’s columns rather than with a simpler cam profile.
For the DD540, the column wheel is part of an integrated calibre, so its switching action is designed alongside the rest of the chronograph train. The column wheel itself does not establish a movement’s accuracy; it describes how the chronograph commands are sequenced.

Horizontal clutch coupling
The horizontal clutch connects the running train to the chronograph train by moving the coupling wheel laterally into mesh. This is different from a vertical clutch, which engages through stacked friction surfaces. A horizontal layout is visually revealing: when the chronograph is started, the coupling parts and their engagement can be observed directly through a display back.
Its trade-offs are equally important. Correct tooth engagement and careful adjustment are essential to limit chronograph-seconds jump and wear. The DD540’s stated specification is therefore best understood as a deliberate traditional pairing: column-wheel command with horizontal-clutch coupling, rather than a claim that one clutch type is universally superior.

How the DD540 displays and operates its functions
Flyback chronograph
A flyback chronograph can be reset and immediately restarted with a single reset action while it is running. That is useful for consecutive timing intervals because the operator does not need separate stop, reset and start presses.

Concentric chronograph register
The DD540 places chronograph seconds at the centre. Chronograph hours and minutes share one subdial, using two concentric hands. This preserves a relatively clean dial layout while keeping both elapsed-time scales in the same register. It also requires the wearer to read hand length or scale assignment carefully, since the two counters occupy the same visual field.
Instantaneous date and power reserve
The date is specified as instantaneous, meaning the change is intended to occur in a rapid jump rather than by a long, gradual crawl. A separate power-reserve indication shows the remaining autonomy, an especially practical complement to a self-winding chronograph that may spend periods off the wrist.

At 32 mm in diameter and 6.60 mm thick, the DD540 is sized for contemporary mechanical watch cases while leaving brands room to design around a chronograph mechanism and its display requirements. The 4 Hz operating rate (28,800 vibrations per hour) is a widely used balance frequency that supports familiar chronograph timing divisions and offers a practical compromise among stability, energy use and service demands. Neither dimension nor frequency, by itself, predicts a finished watch’s accuracy; regulation, lubrication, casing and long-term maintenance still matter.

How Dubois Dépraz says it validated the movement
Dubois Dépraz states that DD540 variants passed standardised shock testing and severe ageing tests. The company lists 10,000 chronograph functions and 5,000,000 rotor turns among those ageing tests.
- These figures are manufacturer-reported test conditions, not a published independent laboratory report.
- “10,000 chronograph functions” refers to repeated chronograph operations during the ageing programme; it is not a promise that every owner will obtain a specific service interval.
- “5,000,000 rotor turns” describes simulated winding-system activity, not a measured number of days of real-world wear.
The tests are useful evidence that Dubois Dépraz subjected the design to deliberate endurance checks, but they should not be converted into independently verified reliability or accuracy claims.
Who supplies chronograph modules to Swiss brands?
Dubois Dépraz remains primarily a business-to-business supplier. Its official company pages direct prospective clients toward sales contacts and catalogue access for movement, complication and component projects. The modular business continues alongside the DD540 rather than being replaced by it.
For a brand, that creates two distinct routes:
- Module route: select a compatible base movement and add a Dubois Dépraz complication, often gaining flexibility across different base-calibre programmes.
- DD540 route: specify a complete integrated flyback chronograph movement and develop the watch around its dedicated architecture and indications.
No consumer retail listing or specific watch model tied directly to the DD540 is established here. Availability, commercial terms, dimensions of any future variants and delivery schedules therefore need to be confirmed with Dubois Dépraz for each project.

The DD540 marks a meaningful expansion of Dubois Dépraz’s role: the company historically associated with supplying modules now presents a complete integrated chronograph with column-wheel control, horizontal-clutch coupling, flyback operation and a distinctive concentric display. Its more-than-72-hour reserve and stated endurance programme make the specification commercially relevant, but the manufacturer’s test figures should remain clearly separated from independent performance evidence. For watch brands, the key decision is architectural: retain the adaptability and economics of a module, or build around Dubois Dépraz’s own integrated chronograph platform.
