The Breitling Aerospace B70 Orbiter is a 43mm titanium ana-digital pilot’s watch commemorating Breitling Orbiter 3’s first nonstop balloon circumnavigation. Its orange dial, thermocompensated SuperQuartz B70 movement and a fragment of the original balloon visible through the caseback make it as much a piece of mission history as a multifunction instrument.
What the Aerospace B70 Orbiter commemorates
Breitling created the Aerospace B70 Orbiter for the 25th anniversary of the Orbiter 3 balloon mission. Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones completed the first nonstop circumnavigation of the globe by balloon on March 21, 1999. Breitling records the journey as 45,633 km completed in 19 days, 21 hours and 47 minutes.
The orange dial references the balloon capsule, while a segment of the original balloon is mounted behind the exhibition caseback. Breitling describes it as “The pilot’s chronograph for adventurers—complete with a living piece of history.” — Breitling product description, 2024
Case size, materials and wrist presence
| Specification | Breitling Aerospace B70 Orbiter |
|---|---|
| Case material | Titanium; Fratello identifies it as grade 2 titanium |
| Diameter | 43mm |
| Thickness | 12.95mm |
| Lug-to-lug | 52.25mm, according to Fratello |
| Lug width | 22mm |
| Crystal | Sapphire |
| Bezel | Bidirectional ratcheted bezel |
| Water resistance | 100m |
At 43mm across and 52.25mm from lug to lug, this is a substantial pilot watch even though titanium keeps it lighter than an equivalently sized steel design. The available specifications do not provide a measured worn weight, so comfort should not be judged by an invented gram figure. The relatively short 12.95mm height and curved lug span should help it sit more naturally than the diameter alone suggests, but smaller-wristed buyers should try it on if possible.

What the Breitling B70 movement does
Breitling Manufacture Caliber B70 is a thermocompensated SuperQuartz electronic movement. It combines analog hour and minute hands with a digital display showing 12- or 24-hour time. The LCD has white backlighting and a battery state-of-charge indicator.
Timing and travel functions
- 1/100-second chronograph
- Split-time and lap-time recording
- Countdown timer
- Second time zone
- Two alarms
- Perpetual digital calendar with week indication
This is a feature-dense quartz pilot watch rather than a simple three-hander with a decorative digital window. The chronograph, countdown and alarms are practical for flights, training sessions and timed tasks; the second time zone and perpetual calendar reduce routine setting work for frequent travelers.

Readability and the ana-digital learning curve
The analog hands provide an immediate glance at local time, while the LCD handles functions that would be difficult to fit onto a conventional mechanical dial. That division is useful, but the controls require a short learning period: selecting a mode, switching between displays and operating split or lap timing are not self-evident from the dial alone.
The B70 instruction manual is the authority for setting analog and digital time, chronograph, countdown, second time zone, alarms, calendar, lighting and battery-state displays. Owners should use its button sequence rather than rely on generic Breitling or digital-watch instructions. The white backlight improves low-light legibility, but the watch still asks you to interpret two display systems instead of one.

Bracelet or black rubber strap?
| Version | Reference | Practical character |
|---|---|---|
| Titanium bracelet | EB70101A1O1E1 | Integrated mission-watch appearance with titanium’s lower mass relative to steel |
| Black rubber strap | EB70101A1O1S1 | More overtly technical and easier to pair with active or wet-use clothing |
Both versions use the same 43mm titanium case and 22mm lug width. That dimension creates a straightforward accessory path: a compatible 22mm watch strap can work in principle, but verify the end-link shape, spring-bar clearance and clasp arrangement before ordering. A generic 22mm strap is not guaranteed to fit the case as neatly as the factory option.
The bracelet better preserves the Orbiter’s commemorative, all-of-a-piece look. Rubber makes the watch feel more purpose-built for travel, sport and hot weather. Neither is objectively superior; the decision is mainly whether you want the historical object to read as a luxury bracelet watch or as an instrument.

The caseback’s emotional value
The balloon fragment is the model’s differentiator. The B70 functions could be delivered by other high-end quartz pilot watches, but the visible material from Orbiter 3 gives this reference a direct physical connection to the mission. It is a provenance detail for the owner, not a performance upgrade, and it will matter most to buyers who value aviation and exploration artifacts.
Price, warranty and regional context
| Price information | Amount and qualification |
|---|---|
| Breitling US product page | USD 5,300 before sales tax; current product page accessed October 1, 2026 |
| Fratello launch specification, 2024 | EUR 4,800 for the titanium bracelet; EUR 4,600 for the rubber strap |
| Warranty shown by Breitling | Two-year international warranty, extendable by up to two additional years through online registration |
These figures are not interchangeable: the US amount is a current regional listing before tax, while the euro amounts are launch specifications from 2024. Exchange rates, local taxes and later pricing changes can alter the comparison. The cited material does not establish current stock, discounts, resale value or an active Amazon listing, so none should be assumed.

Is the Aerospace B70 Orbiter worth it?
It makes sense when you want
- A lightweight, large-format titanium pilot watch with serious quartz functionality.
- A chronograph that adds split and lap timing, plus a countdown, alarms and a second time zone.
- A commemorative object with an actual Orbiter 3 balloon fragment behind the caseback.
- A choice between a matching titanium bracelet and a black rubber configuration.
Look elsewhere when you want
- A compact watch: the 43mm diameter and 52.25mm lug-to-lug span are unapologetically large.
- A mechanical movement or a traditional, hands-only dial.
- A proven long-term accuracy or battery-life record; those outcomes are not documented in the available material.
- A bargain based on resale potential or a confirmed discount.
Ownership and operating notes
The B70 is best approached as an instrument with a manual, not as a watch whose controls can be mastered entirely by trial and error. Keep the instruction manual available for mode changes and calendar, alarm, timer and chronograph setup. Titanium can reduce the burden of a large case, but bracelet sizing and strap changes still require correctly fitting hardware; a spring-bar tool or watch bracelet sizing tool may help with compatible components, while professional service remains the safer choice when fit is uncertain.
No independent measured weight, personal accuracy test or systematic long-term reliability record is established here. Those are reasons to avoid promising a specific battery interval, precision result or durability outcome.
Bottom line
The Aerospace B70 Orbiter earns its premium through the combination of a lightweight 43mm titanium case, unusually capable ana-digital SuperQuartz movement and genuine Orbiter 3 material in the caseback. Its size, learning curve and commemorative premium make it a specialized purchase, but for an enthusiast who wants a real exploration connection rather than a generic quartz tool watch, it is a compelling and unusually specific Breitling.
