It can make a compelling case, but it cannot be crowned the greatest vintage diver of all time on the evidence available. In a June 10, 2021 Fratello feature, collector Tomas Rosputinsky makes an enthusiastic personal case for the Oris Star’s compact proportions, distinctive dial and useful bezel. He does not compare it systematically with other vintage divers. If “greatest” means an appealing, wearable design with an interesting story, the Star belongs in the conversation; if it means a proven winner across history, performance and value, the case remains unmade.
What makes the Oris Star stand out?
Rosputinsky’s appeal is rooted in how the watch comes together rather than in a single headline specification. The example he describes measures 36 mm across, with a rotating bezel, a thick crystal, a prominent crown and an original bracelet fitted with an Oris-signed clasp. He praises the restrained branding and high-contrast dial, especially its oversized luminous dots.
The date window is asymmetrical, another detail that gives the dial more character than a strictly uniform layout. For a wearer who wants a vintage diver that feels compact rather than imposing, that 36 mm case is part of the attraction. These are the author’s descriptions of his example, not confirmed specifications for every Oris Star variant.
A bezel with practical appeal
The bezel on Rosputinsky’s watch does not click as it turns. He says it nevertheless had useful traction and remained functional despite visible scratches on his example. That is an encouraging owner impression, not a controlled durability test or proof that every surviving Star has a sound bezel.

What is the Oris Star, and how is it different from the Oris Super?
According to the Fratello feature, the Oris Star debuted in 1966 with an automatic, 25-jewel caliber 645 and a Swiss lever escapement. Rosputinsky contrasts it with the visually similar Oris Super: in his account, the Super was typically chrome-cased and associated with a hand-wound pin-lever caliber 654, while the Star had a steel case and automatic caliber 645.
That distinction matters to anyone buying one. Appearance alone is not enough to identify or authenticate a watch, and examples may differ in condition or configuration. Treat a chrome-cased watch advertised as a Star as a reason to investigate more closely—not as conclusive proof of misidentification.

Checks to make before buying
- Model marking: Check the watch itself and compare the marking with reliable documentation; do not rely only on a seller’s title or dial appearance.
- Case material: Confirm what the case is made of. A chrome case warrants extra scrutiny given the distinction described in the Fratello feature.
- Movement: Have a qualified watchmaker or reputable dealer verify the movement and its condition against the claimed model.
- Originality and condition: Inspect the dial, hands, bezel, case and bracelet for wear, replacement parts or alterations, and ask what is known about the watch’s history.
- Service and function: Request service documentation where available and have the watch assessed. The feature offers no present-day water-resistance evidence, so do not assume a vintage example is safe to use in water.
- Price and purchase terms: Judge the actual watch, seller, return terms and current asking price. Rosputinsky’s historical price references are not current market data, and marketplace listings are not inherently authenticated.
Why does the Star have an interesting place in Oris history?
The 1966 debut places the Star in a period when Oris was a large watchmaker. Fratello reports, attributing the figures to Oris’s history page, that by the end of the 1960s the company had 800 employees and produced 1.2 million watches and clocks per year; the brand was described as one of the ten largest watch companies in the world. Those are historical figures relayed by Fratello, rather than numbers independently verified here.
The feature also recounts the so-called Swiss “Watch Statute”: it says a 1934 law restricted watch companies’ ability to introduce new technologies without permission, and that Oris honorary chairman Dr. Rolf Portmann joined the company in 1956 and fought for liberalization over ten years. This provides context for the company’s history, but the account is not independently corroborated in the cited material.

Does it deserve the title “greatest vintage diver”?
That depends on what “greatest” is meant to measure. A fair all-time ranking would compare competing watches against the same criteria, including historical importance, legibility, wearability, movement, bezel function, verified water resistance, serviceability, originality, condition and price. The Fratello feature offers one collector’s favorable impressions of an Oris Star on several design and wearability points, but no comparable measurements or evidence about rival models.
Rosputinsky is candidly enthusiastic: “I don’t usually throw around purchase recommendations, but yeah, you should go and get an Oris Star ASAP.” That is his personal recommendation, not an independent assessment of every surviving example or a current buying endorsement. The watch’s charm and thoughtful proportions make it an easy vintage diver to admire; the superlative “greatest of all time” goes further than the available comparison supports.
