The 2023 Summer Blue is shorter and thinner, with a monobloc case, a blue no-date dial and caliber 8912. The earlier steel model is larger front to back and thicker, and keeps its date, orange minute hand and crown-bridge setup. In his March 2024 side-by-side account, Fratello’s Robert-Jan Broer preferred the older crown mechanism for speed and intuitiveness, while noting that the newer system echoes the original 1971 design.
What separates the two Ploprof 1200M watches?
Both are oversized Omega professional-diver watches rated to 1,200 meters, but they represent different generations and design priorities. The steel 1200M arrived in 2009 with caliber 8500 and a separate case back. The 2023 Summer Blue uses caliber 8912 in a monobloc case. The newer watch trims some length and thickness, drops the date, and shifts the dial and hands to blue.
“Ploprof” is shortened from the French Plongeur Professionnel, or “Professional Diver.” Omega’s original Seamaster 600 Ploprof debuted officially in February 1971 and became available two months later, according to Fratello Watches’ March 14, 2024 comparison.

How do the case and wrist presence compare?
Both watches measure 55 mm across, so neither is a discreet diver. The Summer Blue is 3 mm shorter and 2 mm thinner than the earlier steel version according to the reported dimensions. That is a meaningful reduction on paper, but it does not turn the Summer Blue into a small watch: Broer describes both as large.
Broer owns and wore the earlier steel model and compared the two side by side. His wrist measures 18 cm, so his fitting observations are specific to his wrist and should not be treated as a sizing guarantee for another wearer. He also reports that the mesh bracelet from his older watch fit the newer one, while emphasizing that the steel grades differ. Compatibility for other bracelets or straps is not established here.

For a rough sense of weight, Broer says his older mesh-bracelet setup weighed nearly 280 g with all links, while the Summer Blue on his office scale weighed 183 g. Those are his measurements of the configurations he handled, not controlled tests or universal weights for every strap, bracelet or link count.
What changes in the crown and case design?
Earlier steel 1200M
The 2009-generation watch has a separate case back and a helium escape valve. Its crown is protected by a bridge. Broer found this crown setup faster and more intuitive to operate in his hands-on comparison.

Summer Blue
The 2023 watch’s monobloc case moves the helium valve to a lug. Its crown operation uses inner and outer steps, a layout Fratello describes as closer to the original 1971 Ploprof. Broer summarized the trade-off this way: “Although the system on the former steel Ploprof 1200M is a bit quicker and more intuitive, the new Summer Blue edition has a system similar to the original 1971 Ploprof.”
How do the dials and movements differ?
The earlier watch has a glossy black dial, date display and orange minute hand. The Summer Blue replaces that high-contrast orange accent with a sun-brushed blue dial and blue hands, and omits the date. If a date is useful in daily wear, that distinction may matter more than the shared depth rating; if a cleaner dial is the priority, the newer model is the more straightforward fit.

Both movements are reported with a 60-hour power reserve. The earlier caliber 8500 is a COSC chronometer. The Summer Blue’s caliber 8912 is reported as antimagnetic to 15,000 gauss and carries METAS Master Chronometer certification. The 2024 article gives the Summer Blue a 1,200-meter / 120-ATM rating.

- Choose the earlier steel 1200M if you want the date, orange minute hand, and the crown arrangement Broer found quicker to use. Its separate case back and older movement distinguish it from the monobloc successor.
- Choose the Summer Blue if you prefer the blue no-date dial, a case that is shorter and thinner by the reported measurements, and the monobloc construction with caliber 8912 and METAS Master Chronometer certification.
- Try either on before deciding if possible. Their shared 55 mm width makes fit and comfort particularly personal; Broer’s 18 cm wrist and weight observations are only one wearer’s experience.
What did they cost, and are those prices current?
No current price or stock status is established here. Fratello’s March 2024 article reported €8,100 as the earlier steel model’s last known retail price in 2019, and €8,000–€10,000 as publication-time asking prices for good-condition examples on Chrono24. Those are historical figures, not a current valuation or verified market range.

The same article reported a Summer Blue retail figure of €15,800 / CHF 13,500 / US$14,300. That is likewise a figure from the 2024 article, not a confirmation of 2026 pricing, catalog status or availability. Check Omega or an authorized retailer for current new-watch information, and assess condition, provenance and seller reputation individually for a pre-owned example.
