Finnish startup IXI announced a $36.5 million Series A on April 29, 2025, to develop prescription glasses that adjust focus automatically. The company’s proposed eyewear remains in development: as of August 18, 2026, IXI says it is not available for purchase and is not yet CE marked. Its “world’s first” description is a company claim, not a settled category-wide distinction.
What IXI announced
IXI said the Series A was led by Plural, with participation from Tesi, byFounders, Heartcore, Eurazeo, FOV Ventures, Tiny Supercomputer and existing investors, including Amazon’s Alexa Fund. The company said the money would support completion of its adaptive eyewear and the start of commercial operations; the announcement did not set a retail launch date or final price. IXI’s funding announcement and TechCrunch’s report identify Amazon’s participation through the Alexa Fund. That investment does not establish that Amazon will manufacture, sell or integrate the glasses.
How the proposed glasses are meant to work
Presbyopia is the age-related loss of the eye’s ability to shift focus comfortably to nearby objects. Reading glasses, bifocals and progressive lenses address the resulting difficulty with fixed optical correction: wearers switch glasses or look through different zones of a lens. IXI’s concept instead aims to change lens focus in response to where the wearer is looking.
Three parts of the system
- Eye tracking: Sensors in or around the frame are intended to detect eye movement or convergence.
- Control software: The system interprets that information to infer the focus the wearer needs.
- Adjustable lenses: Liquid-crystal elements are intended to alter the lenses’ optical behavior, shifting focus between near and far viewing.
IXI describes real-time, low-power tracking and dynamic lenses on its website. Investor material describes infrared sensing embedded in the eyewear and liquid-crystal lenses, but public materials do not establish detailed specifications such as adjustment range, response time, battery life or prescription limits. FOV Ventures’ announcement offers additional high-level detail.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
“Autofocus” is a useful analogy, not proof that the glasses work like a camera. A camera adjusts its optics for a subject’s distance; IXI’s system is intended to infer the wearer’s desired focus from eye behavior. Gaze direction, eye convergence and intended viewing distance can differ, so the system must make that inference reliably. The concept is a vision-correction product, not a cure for presbyopia or a restoration of the eye’s natural focusing ability.
What “world’s first” means—and what it does not establish
IXI calls its proposed product the “world’s first autofocus eyewear.” The broader category is not empty: TechCrunch has reported on Vixion, which released autofocus eyewear with a more visibly mechanical design, as well as companies including Laclarée and Elcyo pursuing adaptive eyewear. The distinction IXI appears to emphasize is a conventional-looking prescription product with hidden technology, but the unqualified claim that it is the first autofocus eyewear is not established by the available evidence. TechCrunch’s competitor coverage describes the competing efforts.

From funding to commercialization: the public timeline
- April 29, 2025: IXI announced its $36.5 million Series A and emerged from stealth. IXI’s announcement.
- September 26, 2025: The company announced a Finnish lens-facility acquisition and a strategic manufacturing partnership with Optiswiss. These moves point to lens development and production as important parts of getting the product to market; they are not proof of a retail launch. IXI’s partnership announcement.
- January 2026: At CES, IXI’s chief executive described a system combining tunable liquid-crystal lenses, eye tracking and conventional-looking frames. TechRadar’s CES coverage.
- January 30, 2026: IXI announced a letter of intent with French optical groups Atol and Vizio to explore future commercial pilots across a combined network the company says exceeds 3,000 stores. An LOI to explore pilots is not a confirmed pilot, store launch or promise of availability. IXI’s announcement.
- August 18, 2026: IXI’s website still described the glasses as in development, unavailable to buy and not yet CE marked. It offered a waitlist rather than product orders. IXI’s website.
The proof the product still needs
Eye tracking, adaptive optics and ordinary-looking frames make for a promising concept, but funding and manufacturing partnerships do not establish how well the glasses perform in everyday use. The central engineering test is whether the system can change focus quickly and steadily without distracting lag, overshooting or repeated focus shifts. It also has to interpret gaze correctly: looking toward an object does not always mean the wearer intends to focus on it.
- Tracking and fit: Performance needs to remain dependable across lighting conditions, eye shapes and normal frame movement. A shifted frame could affect the relationship between sensors, eyes and lenses.
- Optical quality: The finished lenses need clear vision across useful distances without unacceptable distortion, color effects, glare, reduced contrast or restricted viewing areas.
- Prescription support: Buyers will need specifics on compatibility with their prescription, including astigmatism or prism correction where relevant.
- Power and fallback: The product needs to disclose runtime, charging and repair arrangements, and what vision correction remains if the battery runs out or tracking fails. TechCrunch flagged battery depletion as a practical concern, but IXI has not published a definitive runtime.
- Production and service: The lens-facility acquisition and Optiswiss partnership address manufacturing ambitions; consistent production, fitting, replacement lenses and repairs will still matter to customers.
These are questions the final product must answer, not confirmed defects. IXI has not publicly established its final weight, charging method, all-day calibration needs, water resistance, frame range, prescription limits, insurance reimbursement or availability outside Europe.

Price, regulation and what a buyer can do now
IXI has not announced a final price. In 2025, TechCrunch reported that pricing was unsettled and that the company was considering a level comparable to a high-end iPhone. That was an early-stage comparison, not an MSRP or current price guidance. The company’s website says the glasses are not yet CE marked; that statement does not establish their regulatory status in other jurisdictions or an FDA status in the United States.
There is no IXI product to order as of August 18, 2026. People who want updates can use the official IXI website waitlist. Anyone who needs glasses now can discuss established options—progressives, separate reading and distance glasses, occupational lenses or multifocal contact lenses—with an eye-care professional, based on prescription and use.
