Press the side button to open Control Center, tap Flashlight, then swipe left or right to choose a light mode. Turn the Digital Crown to adjust brightness; press the Crown or swipe down from the top of the screen to exit.
What the Apple Watch flashlight does
The flashlight is a watchOS feature that turns the Apple Watch display into a light source; it does not use a dedicated rear-facing flashlight LED. It is handy for nearby tasks such as finding a lock or picking something up in a dark room, and for making your wrist more noticeable outdoors. Its screen-based light is short-range, so it is not a substitute for a powerful handheld flashlight or headlamp. MacRumors explains the display-based design.
Turn on the flashlight
- Wake the Apple Watch if its screen is off.
- Press the side button beneath the Digital Crown to open Control Center.
- Tap the Flashlight button.
These are the current instructions in Apple’s flashlight guide. Older instructions may say to swipe up from the bottom of the watch face; that applies to earlier watchOS navigation, not the current Control Center path. Apple’s Watch User Guide covers Control Center and its controls.
Choose a flashlight mode
When the flashlight screen is open, swipe left or right to move among the three modes. Apple describes the red mode as helping preserve night vision; it is not a guarantee that the light will be invisible or will not disturb someone nearby.

Adjust brightness
With the flashlight open, turn the Digital Crown up or down to change the flashlight’s brightness. This adjustment is made on the flashlight screen; you do not need to change the iPhone Watch app or the watch’s regular Display & Brightness setting. Lower brightness can be more comfortable in a tent, bedroom, or other shared dark space, while higher brightness is easier to see but more glaring and likely to use more power.

Turn off the flashlight
Press the Digital Crown or swipe down from the top of the flashlight screen. Apple documents both ways to leave the view. If your interface presents it, the side button can also take you out of the flashlight view.
Why does the flashlight open in red?
If the flashlight opens in red, check whether Theater Mode is enabled and swipe to steady white if that is the mode you want. Some users report a connection between Theater Mode and red startup, but Apple’s flashlight guide does not establish that as a universal rule. The initial mode can depend on watchOS version and settings. Reports appear in the Apple Community and in a Reddit discussion; they are user reports, not a guarantee that Theater Mode always changes the default. The available documentation does not establish a way to permanently choose a custom startup mode.

If Flashlight is missing or does not respond
- Press the side button and confirm Control Center is open.
- Look through Control Center and scroll if needed; check whether its controls have been customized or rearranged. Apple’s Watch User Guide provides Control Center context.
- Close and reopen Control Center, then check whether the button responds.
- If Control Center seems incomplete or unresponsive, restart the watch.
- Check for an available watchOS update if the problem began after a software change.
- If the control is still missing or unresponsive, contact Apple Support rather than assuming the watch model lacks the feature.
The current Apple materials explain the flashlight and Control Center, but do not provide a complete model-by-model compatibility list or a specific troubleshooting sequence for a missing Flashlight button. Do not assume support for every model without checking the documentation for your watch and installed software. Apple’s watchOS 26 feature-availability page does not separately enumerate flashlight compatibility.

Because the display provides the light, the flashlight is best for brief, nearby tasks rather than lighting a distant path or a large area. Use an iPhone flashlight or dedicated headlamp when you need stronger, longer-range, or sustained illumination. Prolonged use of a bright display can reduce the watch’s remaining battery; use the lowest practical brightness for the task. Apple does not provide a current, model-specific flashlight runtime figure in the cited guide, so a precise battery estimate would be unreliable.
