Kevin Costner plays New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, whose investigation into President John F. Kennedy’s assassination drives the film. Gibson reportedly declined the role, though the available accounts do not include a direct explanation from him. The film has placed highly on two editorial lists of political thrillers, but those rankings are not universal verdicts—and its historical argument should be treated as a dramatized, disputed thesis.
Which film did Mel Gibson reportedly turn down?
It was JFK, Stone’s film about Garrison’s investigation of Kennedy’s assassination. Turner Classic Movies and Men’s Journal report that Gibson turned down the Garrison role. Costner ultimately played the district attorney.
The casting account needs qualification. In a contemporaneous Los Angeles Times report, Stone described Costner as his preferred choice, despite rumors about Gibson. Men’s Journal attributes the claim that Gibson worried about the controversy and potential career risk to Cinephilia & Beyond; the available reporting does not establish that as Gibson’s own public explanation.
Why is JFK ranked among political thrillers?
The phrase refers to specific editorial lists, not an objective or universal ranking. Men’s Journal reports that JFK placed No. 9 on Collider’s list of the greatest political thrillers of the last 100 years and No. 7 on No Film School’s list of 15 political thrillers that stand the test of time. The lists have different scopes, so their positions should be read as separate critics’ selections.

The film’s blend of investigation, courtroom drama and political argument helps explain its place in the genre. It is also a substantial watch: The Numbers lists a 189-minute runtime, while Rotten Tomatoes gives the length as 3 hours 9 minutes. Both sources list it as rated R.
What is the film’s argument—and what should viewers know about its history?
In the film, Garrison comes to suspect that the official account of Kennedy’s assassination is incomplete and pursues a conspiracy case. That is the movie’s dramatized narrative and political argument, not established historical fact. The Los Angeles Times reported that Garrison prosecuted Clay Shaw for conspiracy and that a jury acquitted Shaw.

Stone’s stated intent was political as well as dramatic. In the 1991 Los Angeles Times report, he described wanting a film about “the problem of covert parallel government in this country and deep political corruption.” That quotation explains the filmmaker’s conception; it does not verify the claims made in the story.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus captures the distinction: “As history, Oliver Stone’s JFK is dubious, but as filmmaking it’s electric, cramming a ton of information and excitement into its three-hour runtime and making great use of its outstanding cast.” Roger Ebert’s contemporaneous review likewise noted that Stone rewrites history without simply adopting every theory advanced by Garrison.

When was the film released?
JFK opened in the United States on December 20, 1991, according to The Numbers. Stone adapted material from Jim Garrison’s On the Trail of the Assassins and Jim Marrs’ Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy, as the Los Angeles Times reported at the time. Those books inform the film’s approach; their inclusion does not turn its conspiracy narrative into settled history.
